Week 2 Open (ie, non-NC State) College Football Thread

Yes, it’s early…but Wake Forest looks like a full-on dumpster fire. Ah, the bottom feeder Atlantic Division clashes. Kind of appropriate that it’s on during a predominantly high school timeslot.

Tomorrow’s slate is pretty mediocre, apart from Dawgs/Cocks. No confirmation as to whether peanut butter will be involved.

I see what you did there.

We better beat both Wake and BC on the road this year.

Knew who rit it, fo I saw it.

Cataclysm ahead for Wake and so it goes.
Personally, I’m tuning up the wide world of stream to watch my nephew play out in Colorado. High School Friday a few K away.

    Who’da thunk it, Beej?

As my only nephew is 3, I am free to stream Cards/Bucs while I watch the Atlantic’s inaugural 2013 shitshow. Hope the young pup has taught the CO folks how to speak cowdog…

There are some decent games tomorrow. Florida/Miami, Cocks/Dawgs, Irish/Michigan. Not a great slate but enough to keep me interested.

  5. BJD95 09/06/2013 at 9:25 PM #

Sleeper game is WV/Oklahoma. I think ND will beat Meechigan, so I can’t watch that one. Florida/Miami always seems to wind up dull, hope that trend is broken. There really are no feasible noon alternatives. Assuming Middle TN doesn’t decide to make me really happy.

  6. BJD95 09/06/2013 at 9:50 PM #

My track record with “very happy” is spotty at best.

  7. packalum44 09/06/2013 at 9:59 PM #

If a line opened today, we’d have to be at least 6 point favorites against both BC and Wake.

BJD willing to reassess your estimate on us making a bowl game?

  8. BJD95 09/06/2013 at 10:07 PM #

Very Mitchell health-dependent. We are a totally different team with him in the lineup.

I’m wary of Richmond. Ask K State, OR State, and South Florida if you think I’m being silly.

  9. Wulfpack 09/06/2013 at 10:18 PM #

Wake and BC always get up for us. We always play down to them. Count on those being squeakers.

My upset special is Arkansas STATE over Auburn. Gus is going to wish he was back in Arky.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well prepared our team looked in general. There just seemed to be an intangible factor that was lacking under TOB. For example getting that turnover back after Pete’s interception. That was caused by hustle and grit. Some teams have it.

One game I admit so we’ll see if my radar fails me and my rose colored glasses blind me.

This WF/BC game is pissing me off, but I’ll keep watching it. It’s sucked from the very beginning. Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get diarrhea and miss the 4th quarter.

We had a dumpster fire at work a few months back and it was a hell of a lot more fun than this game has been.

    Wake looks awful.

  13. choppack1 09/07/2013 at 12:06 AM #

Why did wake switch its offense? Holy cow. BC BC either improved a lot or wake will win 1 acc game this year…that home tilt vs. BC state.

“Very Mitchell health-dependent. We are a totally different team with him in the lineup.”

    Since you brought it up…

Will we miss Mitchell? Of course we will. Are we dependent on Mitchell’s health? Hardly. This is football not basketball. There are 50 other guys who have a say in how the season goes.

Are we a totally different team without Mitchell in the lineup? If the implication is that we can’t win without Mitchell, somebody totally underestimates Matt Canada. Will we have a different look? That’s likely.

I’ll go out on the skinny branches and say that we could be an even better offense with Josh Taylor at QB.

  15. BJD95 09/07/2013 at 8:13 AM #

You are missing my point. The question is, in my mind, whether we are better than 50/50 to make a bowl game. And I most assuredly DO think that depends on Mitchell coming back soon, and being close to 100% when he does.

As was in the paper, Mitchell is really the only option to threaten defenses both as a runner and a passer. That is a huge advantage, and to pretend it’s not seems more than a little silly to me.

  16. Greywolf 09/07/2013 at 9:09 AM #

    Beej,

I don’t miss your point. I just don’t agree with it. Superficially it would appear that our chances without Brandon Mitchell are slim. If all we had was Pete Thomas, as you and the paper seem to think, I wouldn’t be taking the position I’m taking.

Shirreff’s appearance in the Wildcat hides the fact that Josh Taylor is now the 2nd string QB behind Thomas. While he’s not as big and strong as Mitchell, he is more like the QB Canada is looking for than any or the others besides Jacoby Brissett – and he isn’t eligible as yet.

A word of caution, I wouldn’t put a whole lot of stock in what the paper says.

BTW Glad to see that you’ve upgraded your bowl position to 50/50.

  17. Wulfpack 09/07/2013 at 12:19 PM #

What a tremendous drive by the Canes. They look great. Could it be two straight over the almighty SEC? Could be.

  18. VaWolf82 09/07/2013 at 12:24 PM #

Are we dependent on Mitchell’s health? Hardly. This is football not basketball. There are 50 other guys who have a say in how the season goes.

How quickly the lessons learned by watching Davis, Stone, Evans, and Beck are forgotten. State has never had a successful season with a below average QB….and there’s no reason to think that will change this year.

  19. Wulfpack 09/07/2013 at 12:36 PM #

It is by far the most important position on the field. And what is worse is a below average QB will make a defense bleed. It affects the entire team.

  20. BJD95 09/07/2013 at 12:37 PM #

I would go one farther – I don’t think we’ve had a successful season without a well-above average QB (and Mitchell showed flashes of being just that – nobody else did, and I find it hard to believe a freshman walk-on will so qualify).

I think 4-8 is now our rock bottom, which is a big improvement in my assessment. But depth is still an issue, and injuries could still make bowl hopes a pipe dream.

Florida clawed back to 7-6 (missed fake extra point), I missed Da U’s scoring drive. They’ve looked awful since I got back from the vet though.

  21. BJD95 09/07/2013 at 12:39 PM #

Oh how happy I would be if Eastern MI beat Team Bad Touch today

  22. BJD95 09/07/2013 at 12:55 PM #

Florida’s QB is a moron. Though I guess that’s an upgrade over their famous almuni being all racialist and murdery, respectively.

  23. Wulfpack 09/07/2013 at 1:25 PM #

Louisville and Clemson continuing to put up a lot of points on poor opponents. Forgot about Cavs and Ducks at 3:30. Ducks roll easily.

  24. Greywolf 09/07/2013 at 1:27 PM #

Don’t get me wrong, I very much like Brandon Mitchell and the coaches who coached him up are still doing the coaching at NC State. Mitchell’s coming here to try out for QB wasn’t like Russell Wilson, a proven QB, going to Wisconsin.

The putdown of Josh Taylor being a walk-on overlooks the fact that he was recruited as a preferred walk-on after the coaching staff saw him on film while watching his teammate, Bra’lon Cherry. [TIC] The reason Taylor won’t make it is the same reason Russell Wilson won’t make it in the pros — his physical size. His other attributes are also very much like Wilson’s — fast, tough and a winner.

Have fun talking down NC State. I’m leaving for a week in Italy Sunday so your putdowns will go unchallenged by me during the bye week. Chiao
