Sept. 21-22 Open Football Thread

This is probably the worst weekend of the season, college football-wise. Lots and lots of uncompetitive “action.” Here is what I see as a viewing guide for today:

10:00a – Everton at West Ham, NBCSN (Extra Time, channel 1520 for TWC-NC HD feed). Start your day with the English Premier League soccer Pack, trying to avoid a letdown after last week’s gutty upset of asshole franchise Chelsea. As far as I can tell, my constant cheerleading has produced exactly zero new Toffee fans across the pond. Boo. If I’m wrong, you can experience match day with me (Evertonian in NC) and my mostly British cohorts here. It’s a fun, profane group that will sort of remind you of SFN.

Noon – I got nothing here. I may watch the end of GT/Holes if the Bees are winning comfortably. Maybe. Go talk to your family or something equally distasteful.

3:30p – Tennessee at Florida, CBS; West by God Virginia at Maryland, ESPNU. Two games among teams that probably aren’t very good, but have shown signs of being potentially interesting. It would represent HUGE progress for Butch Jones at Tennessee and Randy Edsall at Maryland to beat hated rivals a bit on the downswing. And hate is usually fun to watch.

7:00ish-p – Arizona State at Stanford, Fox; Auburn at LSU, ESPN. Both games would be far more interesting if the road/home splits were reversed…but I will take what I can get. Nobody is totally sold on just how good the Tree or Mad Hatters are this year, and this will be at least a moderate test for both. Certainly not watching the flaming bag of feces that is ABC’s national game – Michigan at winless UConn. Blech.

You are just the worst kind of people.

For decades TV games have lasted 3.5 hrs yet everyone blocks off only 3 hours. The ACCN goes one step further and starts at 12:30, which means locally on WRAL you miss the whole first quarter of the SEC 3:30 game every week.

    Don’t I know it, wuf!

Turtles up big early. Pitt holds on in the battle for the Coastal cellar.

Dear Ohio State and Louisville: You aren’t impressing anybody but yourselves.

Playing schedules like that, despite already playing cake conference slates…I would be hard pressed to vote either as much as Top Ten.

Hasn’t Teddy Bridgewater been a senior for like 3 years now?

  14. Wufpacker 09/21/2013 at 4:36 PM #

OK, I’m getting bored now. This is never a good sign….

    Nice kick Irish.

I agree they aren’t impressing anyone, but they sure are trying!

    My nap now delayed.

FL/TN is by far the ugliest game of the century.

  20. BJD95 09/21/2013 at 5:01 PM #

Don’t shoot the messenger…but I think Maryland might actually be good. Borderline Top 25, even.

Methinks that is the stealth Atlantic contender that Clemson need be wary of.

FL/TN is taking back offensive (well, in one sense ofthe word) football back at least 50 years.

  21. Wulfpack 09/21/2013 at 5:02 PM #

They are each not representing their glorious conference well. They both stink out loud. Jawja or Chickens against Sabans or Madd Hatters.

  22. Wulfpack 09/21/2013 at 5:04 PM #

Clemson is at Maryland in late October. If the Tiggers beat FSU the week prior, that could very well be where they pull a Clemson.

  23. PackFamily 09/21/2013 at 5:08 PM #

MD looks better with CJB back, but they’ve played a light schedule. FIU, ODU, UConn, and a WVU team that is back to earth.

  24. BJD95 09/21/2013 at 5:08 PM #

Oh wow, that is the perfect setup for pulling a Clemson. I almost feel bad for the poor bastards already. Almost.

Though MD might be too good for it to be classified as a true “pulling a Clemson.” But not if they lose by 20+.

    Thirty-zip Turtles.

The gobble, gobble, gobble sound effect at Va Tech has to be the Hokiest thing I’ve ever heard.
