Sept. 21-22 Open Football Thread

This is probably the worst weekend of the season, college football-wise. Lots and lots of uncompetitive “action.” Here is what I see as a viewing guide for today:

10:00a – Everton at West Ham, NBCSN (Extra Time, channel 1520 for TWC-NC HD feed). Start your day with the English Premier League soccer Pack, trying to avoid a letdown after last week’s gutty upset of asshole franchise Chelsea. As far as I can tell, my constant cheerleading has produced exactly zero new Toffee fans across the pond. Boo. If I’m wrong, you can experience match day with me (Evertonian in NC) and my mostly British cohorts here. It’s a fun, profane group that will sort of remind you of SFN.

Noon – I got nothing here. I may watch the end of GT/Holes if the Bees are winning comfortably. Maybe. Go talk to your family or something equally distasteful.

3:30p – Tennessee at Florida, CBS; West by God Virginia at Maryland, ESPNU. Two games among teams that probably aren’t very good, but have shown signs of being potentially interesting. It would represent HUGE progress for Butch Jones at Tennessee and Randy Edsall at Maryland to beat hated rivals a bit on the downswing. And hate is usually fun to watch.

7:00ish-p – Arizona State at Stanford, Fox; Auburn at LSU, ESPN. Both games would be far more interesting if the road/home splits were reversed…but I will take what I can get. Nobody is totally sold on just how good the Tree or Mad Hatters are this year, and this will be at least a moderate test for both. Certainly not watching the flaming bag of feces that is ABC’s national game – Michigan at winless UConn. Blech.

    What’s this?

No love for Sparty vs Irish?

Who be you, good sir, and what have ye done with BJD?

For the early game I’m listening to Wake and Army while I pull some weeds from my big flowerbed. Outside in the almost rain so need a little comic relief. Speaking of time to unload and then reload the truckbed.

Can’t say I’m all that excited about today’s slate of games – in part because no Pack game and in part because the games just are not all that.

LMAO, Wuf. Sparty’s offense makes Wake Forest look good by comparison. A dull as dishwater 20-7 win over a poor Big Ten-ish club and endless Irish fellating. No thanks.

I hope some of you watched the second half of Everton just now. That’s the best soccer you will ever see.

Alpha or some other ManU fan will have to explain to me why they valued Felliani so highly and were so tight fisted in their half-hearted pursuit of Leighton Baines.

It’s only 8 after 12 and I’ve already had as much ACC football as I can stand. GT looked clueless on D and un*x friggin went for 2 and blew it. Fat chick ugly.

    My head hurts…..

    …Go Yellow Jackets!!!

    POP!

  6. BJD95 09/21/2013 at 12:20 PM #

Yeah, I definitely won’t be watching any of Bees/Holes. Blech.

Play in the GT-UNX game just played out exactly how the Underwood play SHOULD have been called. UNX player running with the ball down the sideline, appears to step out, continues to run, and official does not blow the whistle until the player is tackled and the play is over. They then spot the ball back where they think he stepped out. The whistle is the key.

^And it surprises anyone that it was called differently for the boys in blue? And that’s not necessarily a conspiracy theory statement, just an SSDD statement.

And I hear ya BJD, I wasn’t necessarily expecting it to be a compelling matchup. But I thought like myself, you shared a kindred kind of thing with those boys from East Lansing.

    You disappoint me.

Your point re: the NBC Irish fellating is well taken. But I generally keep the sound turned down on just about all games if NCSU isn’t involved (and even some of ours, depending) so I worry not over such things.

    UNC’s Otis flagged for taunting/unsportsmanlike.

Nice to know The Carolina Way is still alive and well, even under new management.

I do love Sparty, my favourite Big Tenish side. Culturally similar to us. But they don’t have it this year.

  11. Wufpacker 09/21/2013 at 12:40 PM #

Oh, and eff the Red Sox.

And the Rays too for that matter.

18 inning games just don’t agree with my teams it seems.

  12. Wufpacker 09/21/2013 at 12:40 PM #

Wow. It REALLY pains me to say this…

But helluva catch by Heels’ Ebron for 6.

  13. MP 09/21/2013 at 12:45 PM #

    “the Tree”, LOL.

^ I’ll pile on while we’re at it. Eff the Mets and Yankees too!

    Michigan-UConn isn’t national. It’s split with Texas-Kansas State.

  15. Texpack 09/21/2013 at 12:54 PM #

    Tech needs this fourth down.

  16. Texpack 09/21/2013 at 12:55 PM #

That was a fumble but the call might stand.

  17. BJD95 09/21/2013 at 12:57 PM #

Texas/K State at least has the interesting side story of two coaches near death (one literal, one figuratively). But NC gets Michigan/UConn for no rational reason.

  18. Texpack 09/21/2013 at 12:58 PM #

    Tech was fortunate there.

Strictly geography. Mrs. Tex says she’s pulling for KSU tonight because she thinks it might mean the end for Mack.

    … endless Irish fellating

^This is a sacred national media pastime. Do not desecrate!

The Thundering Herd goes up on the wounded turkeys in Blacksburg, 21-14.

  22. Wufpacker 09/21/2013 at 1:12 PM #

LaTech up on KU in Lawrence btw. Not that the flamboyant chickens are a power or anything. But they are a BIGXII at home.

  23. Wufpacker 09/21/2013 at 1:18 PM #

Speaking of near death, Gophers in a tight one with San Jose St.

    Jerry Kill looking edgy.

Paramedics standing by with IV diazepam and thiobarbiturates.

Seems a baseball game has broken out in West Point.

Wake up 3-2 on Army, under two to play in the 2nd qtr.

EDIT – Just as I hit enter, Wake strikes for a 66yd TD pass, 10-2 now.

Going to do some shopping, chores, exercise, etc. today as this is a horrid day of college football. At least there are some good games tomorrow…
