The reasonable among us aren’t arguing that line judge Richard Misner’s blown call cost State the game — we knew we’d have to keep scoring to win that game. But it’s entirely fair to say it shifted the momentum of a tight, hard-fought game squarely into Clemson’s favor.

This is all hypothetical, of course, but it gives you a good idea of how this call changed the game. Assuming that Misner’s bad whistle doesn’t blow the play dead and Underwood’s TD stands, and the next few series remain similar, then here’s how the game could’ve looked different:

*Assuming a good PAT, State leads 14-13 with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter.

*We eliminate Clemson’s quick score after this because the fumble at midfield never happened. On its next possession, Clemson scores a touchdown after a 10-play, 3:33 drive and leads 19-14 lead (remember, they went for two).

3:58, 3rd quarter

*Then, State manages that same 23-play, 7:37 drive, ending in a touchdown and a 21-19 lead.

11:21, 4th quarter

*At this point, State’s ensuing kickoff likely gives Clemson a long field, just like they’d had much of the night (to that point, Clemson had started inside its own 25 a total of five of its nine possessions). Clemson takes over, trailing 21-19, and begins its drive while swarmed by a deafening Carter-Finley stadium. It’s entirely likely Clemson would’ve scored on that drive, and took the lead, either 22-21 on a field goal or 27-21 on a touchdown (at that point they go for two, and assume they convert).

*But, the difference is now State would’ve had, at the very least, a chance to stop them on that drive, and/or score on its next possession. Either of those scenarios puts State in the driver’s seat down the stretch.

Instead, the touchdown run is called back, State fumbles three plays later, and Clemson throws a touchdown with 6:52 remaining in the third quarter to lead 20-7 and take control of what had to that moment been anyone’s game. Momentum matters, especially playing at home.

State was playing well enough to, at the very least, deserve the chance to determine the outcome — win or lose — on its own. And that chance was taken away by Misner’s bad call.

/\ Don’t see a press conference doing anything but making us come across as whinny brats. It won’t change anything, certainly not the two points you mention Chop. Good wish however….but a bad result if we try it.

I say that that a new rule implementing a rule deemed a game changing play with one for each half, regardless if the play is blown dead, still can be reviewable. And again the go to the SEC bandwagon, there is only a small minority of Pack Nation that even desires this. I recall strong rumor of GT doing the same, and like I said that wasn’t gonna happen, and it didn’t. The ACC is an up and coming league, with its members, and we don’t tuck and run, we fix what is wrong, and that doesn’t mean it will be an easy task. And it always proves true what goes around comes around, so Clemson will get theirs.

John Galt – that is fine if you are OK with the status quo. If you aren’t. That is t only action I see changing anything.

Aside from the detrimental officiating, I think if you reflect on the Pack’s overall performance, I would draw a few conclusions:

    1) We’d played just about as good as we can. If officiating AND/OR luck had been on our side, we may win.

    2) Richmond essentially beat us (despite the score we were outplayed).

    3) In the context of #1 and 2 above, is that much different than Tom Obrien teams?

    4) Our offense is about ACC average with Pete in the game.

    5) Our defense is surprisingly good and improving. Corners burnt on a couple 3rd downs is unfortunate, but its the hardest match up in football.

    6) 6-7 wins, as predicted by many, still seems the most plausible forecast.

    Good day.

The Grant of TV Rights all ACC teams agreed on ended any speculation of leaving the ACC. It’s not even an option anymore.

Let’s see what the Zebras do with this TD call by Tech. It’s as close as ours, but “the officials did what they are TAUGHT to do which is NOT to blow the whistle.”

NOW they’re talking about our game.

Touchdown Tech. Now I’m off to Facebook to watch karma kick the Heels fans square in the nuts.

Luke: Contracts are based on generalized principles of fair trade practices. I agree with you for the most part, but if there was ever a smoking gun of something more than a conspiracy the contract could be argued to be voided. I realize that’s a pipe dream at best, but in the day of dingdongs using email it’s never completely out of the realm of possibility.

In a comment above ” I think if you reflect on the Pack’s overall performance, I would draw a few conclusions:” well I drew a few conclusions and just for fun I’ve posted my conclusions.

“1) We’d played just about as good as we can.”
This judgment may be premature after 3 games in a new system with a second string QB at the helm. Thomas will get better as will the rest of the team.

“2) Richmond essentially beat us (despite the score we were outplayed).”
Richmond was shut down and failed to score in the second half. How is that essentially or otherwise beating us? If you want to say Richmond out played us/beat us in first half, fine. Please, there are 2 halves to a football game.

“3) In the context of #1 and 2 above, is that much different than Tom Obrien teams?”
They do both play with an oblong ball and with 11 men on each side and a lot of the same players are here. Other than that IMNSHO TOB teams and Dave Doeren’s teams are like night and day. (Is this the first shot fired at Dave Doeren?)

“4) Our offense is about ACC average with Pete in the game.”
Thomas lead 2 very long TD drives behind a patched together OL against a very athletic defense. If we count Underwood’s TD, and I do, he lead 3 long drives for TD’s. Let’s see if the rest of the ACC does as well against Clempson.

“5) Our defense is surprisingly good and improving. Corners burnt on a couple 3rd downs is unfortunate, but its the hardest match up in football. ”
Only ‘surprisingly good’ for some and those 2 TDs were against freshmen replacements for injured Burris. Yes we have little depth at this time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Byrd temporarily move to one corner if Burris is out for an extended period of time. It looked like a concussion but hopefully not.

“6) 6-7 wins, as predicted by many, still seems the most plausible forecast.”
Let’s see, we get Mitchell back mid-October or thereabouts. I’d say we are still could win 8 or 9 with the wind to our backs.

Doeren is the real deal. This football team is going to be playing some close games and IMO winning them.

I think it would be a good idea for DY to call a press conference and just state that the controversial call by the official yesterday was simply a bad call that seems to be the pattern for referees in N.C. State Football and Basketball games. We accept that and know that this call was at a crutial time during the game that changed the momentum and possibly cost N.C. State the game. Our team played hard and represented N.C. State very well and although there was a bad call and a criminal mugging on the field, for which the penalty was insufficient, we congratulate Clempson on the win and we’ll continue to acknowledge and challenge the pathetic officating that seems to be targeting N.C. State athletic teams. Also, we will do everything in our power to see that the incompetent leadership in the ACC office be dealt with swiftly and we’ll work tirelessly to see them removed from their present leadership role! End!!! Go Pack!!!!

So, their conclusion: If you analyze all angles, slow it down, and look at various still shots, many show him in and one shows he may be out. Therefore, Misner made the correct call by whistling it dead and calling him out? The more correct conclusion would see to be, “We’ve looked back and analyzed it every way possible and still can’t really say for sure that he was out of bounds, so how the heck could Misner have been so sure?”

  12. Wulfpack 09/21/2013 at 4:45 PM #

It is what it is. I don’t think there was a conspiracy like some. It was just a bad call that should have never been made. It is a shame that such calls are not reviewable. We must move on, and without silly press conferences. The only folks watching would be State fans.

I believe we have the right coach and staff to build something good here, and the league is improving as a whole. This is good news as there will be opportunities that move the needle nationally.

We are fine. Just relax and enjoy the progress wr are seeing.

I’d say “no” to a PC. Work this behind the scenes.

I don’t know why any statement was made about reviewing film and images, it can’t be changed so what’s the point. Doug Rhoads should have made a statement about emphasizing proper procedure for such a play, i.e. don’t make the call if you’re obstructed.

    I love it when:

    1. State fans acknowledge Swofford is a pansy and Deb could take him(if we could get her to grow a pair and take him own).
    2. State fans finally see “Classy Clempson” for what they are? Which also includes putting the “P” back in the spelling of the word. There ain’t no freakin’ Z in there.
    3. State fans see the horse crap for officials that we have in the conference…See No 1 above as to why!

Crap, I’d rather withdraw and wander in the wilderness than get screwed by Swofford’s bunch! Oops! Somebody did that ‘cept it wasn’t Swoffy then, just other corrupt ACC leadership…

If you withdraw and don’t jump conferences, is there a penalty? I know that would be extremely difficult, but screw Swofford and Crew! Frankly, lay enough info out and dare the bastards to enforce the clauses.

Plywood… I know for a fact we’ve worked behind the scenes since herb sendek was our basketball coach.

If you want a laugh look what happened here 4 years ago. I will give you a hint. The acc apologized.

That’s OK though. I am sure we will turn the corner
