Scott Wood signs to play in Spain

Looks like the competition for that shooting need of the Los Angeles Clippers got a little tight for NBA free agent and former Wolfpacker, Scott Wood.

Wood has signed a contract to play for UCAM Murcia in Spain’s top professional league (Liga ACB). Link to N&O article.

Scott Wood, the most prolific 3-point shooter in N.C. State men’s basketball history, signed a contract with UCAM Murcia in Spain. Wood spent this past summer playing on the Los Angeles Clippers’ summer league team.

The 6-foot-6 Wood finished his Wolfpack career as the school’s all-time leader with 334 made 3-pointers. He also holds the school record for games started in a career (136). Wood scored 1,467 career points for the Wolfpack, ranking 18th in school history.

A startling reminder of just how great an all-around player Rodney Monroe was. Wood hit more 3’s than he did, but Monroe scored over 50% more career points. Wow.

We remember Rodney’s 3’s… but until you go back and watch highlights (like the YouTube of his 48-pointsplosion against Ga Tech that I had the good fortune of attending), you forget that he wasn’t just a shooter. He was a scorer.

Best wishes to Scott – he should have a nice, long career somewhere other than an office. 🙂

Congrats to Scott Wood. This is the top of the line of where his basketball skills will take him. And just because he didn’t make the NBA doesn’t mean that he isn’t extremely successful. He is going to be rich in his early 20s from playing a game for a living. I wish Him all the best and a long basketball career.

    Good luck Scott!

The international game is no joke these days … Scott’s done well for himself over his playing career.

^^That Ga Tech game ‘woth’ mentioned was awesome.

Well done Scott! You are a professional basketball player.
This is the best case scenario for you, so enjoy the heck out of it. Rodney Monroe had a nice, long career in Europe, I think you can too.

    Congratulations!!

Congrats Scott! I can think of much, much worse things than playing pro basketball in Spain — particularly for a young man with some disposable income. The stories he’ll be able to tell………..

    Good for him.

Maybe the money’s not as good, but playing in Spain sounds a whole lot more appealing than playing in Memphis, Detroit, DC, OKC and a whole lot of other lame US metros.

Good luck. Don’t expect any quick trips in and out of Gibraltar these days.

I too was there for Rodney’s 48 in Reynolds. That, and the BJ Armstrong/Iowa NCAA tourney game were two of his most memorable.

Had to look it up. Damn, he was smooth.

25 in regulation, including the game tying shot w/ 3 seconds left. Then 15 in the OTs, including once again, the game tying shot with 3 seconds left in the 1st OT. Time after time after time he hit the crucial, clutch shot in that game.

You younger folks should watch this. Still amazing 25 years later.

Spain is pretty cool. Of course, I was there before unemployment was 23%…

He is a favorite of mine and was always ready with a great quote.

Rodney Monroe is my favorite BC state player… it was awesome watching him and corchiani in the backcourt together.

I think it was the GT game with the Raycom graphic – “current run – R. Monroe 20, GT 2” (twas either the Bees or UVA).

When he started feeling it, you simply could not stop him. Inside, outside, didn’t matter. He would make you look silly.

Lifelong belief – any professional league that didn’t have room for a Rodney Monroe or Randolph Childress (the last two “must see” ACC players) – that’s not basketball, but basketball-themed entertainment.

Back to the topic at hand. Welcome, nation of Spain, to the Woo Tang Clan. Check yo’ neck.

I wish Scott well and expect one day to see him sitting on the sideline coaching a D1 team … hopefully the ‘Pack.

tj – You know how you get chills watching old clips like that sometimes? I got chills remembering the Iowa game, just from your description. I was in the car on a trip somewhere during that game – but the radio call etched an image in my brain of what it looked like. Thanks for the link…

And more chills after watching it again. Jeebus… I have no idea how you stop that. His 15-foot fadeaway was just devastating. You’d have to double-team him WITHOUT the ball to have a chance…
