College Football 2013 Kicks Off

Joy of joys, our long national nightmare of watching only baseball and soccer ends tonight. Hopefully with some nice, medium-well Hole Schadenfreude. Yes, teams will be rusty, but there are at least theoretically interesting matchups, headlined by Georgia/Clemson and LSU/TCU. Hell, I’m even geeked to stay up late to watch Ole Miss and Vandy tonight.

Every football fan likes to complain about their team’s schedule. Cry Georgia a river – they open in Death Valley, then host the Clowney show in Week Two. Even if they go 2-for-2, they could easily get screwed in the nonsense BCS scheme’s last year. More below.

In my view, the most interesting theoretical exercise is who Alabama (roll damn Tide!) will beat in January’s BCS funeral. My belief in a just and merciful God requires me to fervently believe that someone, some week will beat Louisville and Ohio State, each of whom play an embarrassing schedule. I would select a 1-loss SEC team or Clemson for the title game over either. But we know that’s not how the absurd system works. So…trust in the just and merciful God to deliver us from those cowards getting rewarded.

One of my work colleagues made the most logical argument I’ve heard yet – Stanford. Under David Shaw, they are focused and relatively error-free every week. That makes total sense, especially since they get Chip Kelly-less Oregon at home this year. But this is more fun – imagine that Clemson and South Carolina each lose to Georgia, narrowly. Georgia loses one other game, but makes it to the SEC title clash on head-to-head. In the likely event that Alabama beats them (this also works if UGA enters the game undefeated, but gets beaten soundly by the Tide)…couldn’t the winner of the Clemson/South Carolina season ender be your #2? It could happen. I would enjoy that.

I also want to give a shout out to our goofy friends at the NCAA, for giving me the best laugh I’ve had all summer. Johnny Manziel is suspended…for one HALF…against RICE. Ooooh, that will teach them a lesson, making TAMU try out their backup QBs running with the 1s in a rout. Totally.

Let’s get the traffic back up and talk some general college football in the comments section. If the games get dull, you can talk about what you did this summer, etc.

Side note Andre Brown broke his leg AGAIN tonight against the Pats. Feel bad for the kid. So much promise.

There goes the dirty heel play. That’s messed up

    Cocks stiffen, ream Holes! 😉

  4. JohnGalt78 08/29/2013 at 10:56 PM #

Was that a directional punt? Didn’t think they taught that in college, Tom.

I missed the cheap shot, but it was bad enough that the halftime studo crew of Ole Miss/Vandy wasn’t mincing words. I love how Spurrier kept twisting the knife the last five minutes. Fuck those guys.

Vandy had one hell of a second quarter.

  6. BJD95 08/30/2013 at 7:30 AM #

Yes indeed, I stayed up through the conclusion of Ole Miss and Vandy. What a freaking game. And to think…that’s the MIDDLE tier of the SEC.

Everyone can probably catch up on sleep tonight, unless Miami decides to shit the bed against FAU.

LT gets SEC leftovers…hope they are just that. Go Pack!!!

Good to see orange county u lose, we should beat Clemson we have dumped them recently while ranked. Maryland, Wake and Duke are the real ones that frieghten me…call me foolish but long time Pack fans know what I am talking about.

“The Zebes will be lost in space like no other time, since Billy Mummy.” cowdog

Got to love the Billy Mummy reference. Last weekend I was channel surfing and absolutely nothing was on….and then I found an episode of Lost in Space on channel 86487 or something that I never scroll that far on the guide. I had to stop and watch for a few minutes.

I was extremely impressed with Ole Miss. Hugh Freeze is recruiting like a mad man. Watch out for the Rebs. Bama will crush the Hokies. Clemson and UGA should be a classic. I give a slight edge to jawja, but we all know how explosive that Tiger offense can be. Can’t wait.

I believe that’s Billy Mumy (pronounced “Moome”).

Looks like the ACC is back, except that we’ll have even more teams to stink up the season.

UNC looked awful, even with South Carolina looking more like it was opening practice rather than opening the season.

Who’s gonna start @ QB: Mitchell, Thomas, Tebow, RG3?

  12. BJD95 08/30/2013 at 1:04 PM #

Hey, at least we didn’t add UConn (blown out by Towson)!!

I could see Ole Miss (led by “Redneck Fabio” which I wish I could turn into a full meme) being more of a challenge to Bama than TAMU this year (the circus atmosphere will take its toll). That’s a legit football team, fast as hell.

Mitchell will start for us, I have very little doubt. Just gamesmanship.

Incidentally, did anyone catch how quickly there was a mention to how “peculiar” Ole Miss’ recruiting success was? I can’t remember where I heard it, but it was a passing glance (We won’t spend any time talking about HOW Mississippi amassed such a class, but rather who they are…)

Funny we never heard that when Butch came in and started promising nap time and juice boxes for scholarships.

“Unfortunately I think The Holes have a shot tonight. Clowney is a F’n monster but besides that their relatively unknown. Their QB situation sucks as usual which causes the ole ball coach to have a brain aneurysm on the sidelines.”

Obviously Mista Wolf never pays attention to football games..Jeez! Did you pay attention to that “sucky QB” situation last night?

  15. highstick 08/30/2013 at 2:12 PM #

Wufpacker and CD…the Stick was “in da house” last night and evacuated to a lower level to get out of the storm.

It was miserably hot and humid and if there had not been a slight breeze, one would have seen a bunch of players puking on the field aka the “Vandy-Ole Miss” game later.

Lots of rotations last night and a typical early season game with Spurrier testing different schemes. Clowney apparently had a little stomach bug, but with the hype he’s had to endure lately, I would have too.

Renner heard his feet so he impacted a lot of plays just by being on the field.

I talked to a fellow locally yesterday morning that knows both of the “Dixon’s…Little G and Big G…Big G broke about all of the weight lifting records this year and runs a 4.8 in the 40 at about 305 lbs.

Shaw got “happy feet” a few times last night, but when Dylan made his one play, one TD play, he was rock solid in the pocket..And Lattimore’s back up from the 2011 season, Brandon Wilds is back, bigger and meaner. I virtually shoved the entire Hole defense an extra 5-7 yards last night and they still couldn’t bring him down.

Didn’t want anyone injured so that last 8 minutes was scary..We need all the “Chickens” healthy to invade Athens next weekend…

    Go Jawja…this weekend, that is!

You guys think I’m nuts being a Wolfpack and Gamecock Club member…I met an even wackier one last night..Wolfpack Gamecock, and Rams Club…but he was wearing light blue so he gave away his true colors..

I have never seen live puke of such volume as by that Vandy WR. Couldn’t believe they put him back in the game, as a hard head bounce of the turf preceeded said puke by about 45 seconds. Gave me a bit of pause re Coach Franklin…

  17. Greywolf 08/30/2013 at 2:24 PM #

I think the concern for who is starting is overblown. As I’ve said before regardless of who starts both QBs will get significant playing time. Skippy-boy was quoted as saying how difficult it is preparing for both a QB who is a runner and a QB who is known to be a passer. DD will want more than LaTech to have that problem.

The surprise will be who the #3 QB is. I predict it won’t be Stocker and we know it won’t be Shirrefs or Latham. Walk-on Taylor is my guess. Speaking of Shirrefs he’s become one of my favorite players for his attitude — doing what’s best for the team. IMO Stocker would be smart to request a move to LB.

    HEELS WINLESS!

Just wanted to see that in print. Nice…..

  19. Wufpacker 08/30/2013 at 4:41 PM #

“nap time and juice boxes for scholarships.”

    That made me loller.

  20. Pack78 08/30/2013 at 5:51 PM #

Love the Lost in Space references; June Lockhart was a looker back in the day…Coach Hat sounds like a ‘bubble-headed booby’…

  21. TLeo 08/30/2013 at 6:18 PM #

I just wish USC had connected and scored on that late deep pass. The Hat obviously is a total douche. The ‘holes were up to their usual cheap shots last night. The late, cheap shot on Clowny could have really injured him as well as the helmet to helmet hit by their #20 on the USC carrier when he was down. The ACC officials are up to their usual corrupt job by ignoring those blatant penalties.
Anyway…looking forward to tomorrow and a fresh start. I think it may be an up and down ride this year but in the long run it sure appears we are in good hands with these coaches.

Today in an interview Coach Doren said he already knows who the starter is and intends to leave that person in the game unless they have issues.

  23. eas 08/30/2013 at 7:03 PM #

Does the game come on any channels other than ESPN3 tomorrow? I’m in the Winston-Salem area so I am assuming it will not be on local TV. I hope it is though! My Internet is slow as $$$$ so that feed is not an option.

  24. PackFamily 08/30/2013 at 7:26 PM #

eas, the game is on the ACC Network. Fox 50 in Raleigh.

  25. eas 08/30/2013 at 7:43 PM #

Ok good should be on my local channels then. Thanks….I was getting worried I might be stuck by the radio.
