Wolfpack wins! Baseball team is Omaha bound!

omaha

NC State beat Rice 5-4 in 17 innings tonight to make it back to Omaha for the first time since 1968. Tarran Senay scored on a double by Brett Williams in the top of the 17th inning. Ethan Ogburn pitched 5 scoreless innings in relief for the biggest win for the Pack in 45 years.

No doubt more to come.

State will play the winner of tomorrow night’s decisive Game 3 between North Carolina and South Carolina. FYI…it is on at 7 PM on ESPN2 if you have any viewing interest.

Fantastic news. I checked back a few times after the rain delay, but then had to go to bed. It’s great to wake up to a win.

Thus far, only #4 LSU has made to Omaha of the original top 8 seeds…#’s 1,3,and 6 still have a shot. CWS is gonna be interesting.

Some baseball questions for Wulpucker et al:
    1. It seemed like alot of our batters were taking the first pitch. Was that a personal thing or called by the coach. It was frustrating seeing a fastball right down the middle for the first strike time after time. Then we chase a curve or slider or foul one off and all of a sudden it is 0-2 or 1-2 and the batter has to swing at just about anything close.

    2. I did not notice the Rice batters taking nearly as many first pitches.

    3. Is Avent a classic coach that doesn’t do much analysis of batters and how their hit/strike out patterns chance after taking the first pitch or is he a moneyball type analytic guy.

    4. Do we have stats on how each batter performs as a bunter against different tyes of pitchers? Do they know which batters they can count on to bunt well or will they call for anyone to bunt.

I have learned alot of baseball in the past few weeks since my career ended as an early teenager for an easier sport like tennis
