Raleigh Regional Saturday

blockSbaseballWolfpack Baseball (45-14) took the first step (hopefully of many) towards Omaha Friday night, when it took care of business against the Bearcats from Binghamton (30-24)

The Pack jumped to an early lead behind Tarran Senay’s first inning two run blast, his 7th of the season.  Senay was 2 for 4 on the night with the HR, a double and 2 RBIs.  Not happy with being 2nd on the Pack’s season HR list, Trea Turner delivered a solo shot of his own in the 6th inning, his 7th of the season.

Brett Austin (2 for 4, double) and Jake Fincher (2 for 4, run) each also had multi hit games as well.

But it was Jake Fincher’s clutch grab in right field that had the crowd oohing and ahhing last night.  The catch might not have looked QUITE as spectacular as the grab Brett Williams made earlier in the year vs New Mexico State.  But given the circumstances and the fact that it saved at least one run, and more likely two, from scoring for Binghamton (and that Fincher sacrificed the body big time, eating about a pound of track dirt for his efforts), I personally give it AT LEAST equal props,  Probably more.

If you missed it you can see it here (thx to elvislives for the link).

Ethan Ogburn got the start on the bump for the Pack, but would take a no decision after 3.2 mostly effective innings, despite living dangerously pretty much every inning.  Andrew Woeck came on with 2 down in the 4th and pitched a nice scoreless transition inning, but even he wasn’t his usual self.

But Woeck did enough to hand it off to Josh Easley who was lights out.  Easley tossed 4.1 innings of one hit scoreless ball, and seemed to only get stronger as the game went on.  By the 8th and 9th innings, there was little doubt that the Bearcats’ hitters had no answer for him.  He would get credit for the win, his 6th of the season out of the bullpen (6-2).

Box Score

Earlier in the day in Raleigh, the Tribe of William & Mary asserted themselves and represented the CAA with mucho gusto, defeating a lackluster Ole Miss Rebels squad by a final score of 4-2.

Saturday in Raleigh

So, today’s games shape up like this…

Ole Miss and Binghamton will each be playing for their NCAA Tourney lives as they face off in the the loser’s bracket at 2pm.  The loser goes home.

The Pack and the Tribe from Bill n Mary will face off in the winner’s bracket at 7pm.  The winner moves on to Sunday’s SECOND game (6pm).  The loser must then face whoever survives today’s Ole Miss/Binghamton affair in tomorrow’s early game (1pm).

If the Pack can get thru today’s contest with Bill n Mary with a win, then someone will have to beat them tomorrow AND Monday in order to advance.  If the Pack loses today, then they’ll need to take three straight (two tomorrow and one on Monday).

So….win today, please.

Today’s games are only being shown in their entirety on ESPN3.  But if you have cable/satellite, be sure to check and see if your system/provider is carrying the temp channel ESPN Bases Loaded.  It’s a whip around type channel (a la the NFL RedZone) where they try to keep the viewer abreast of all the goings on by showing pertinent points in all games.

It’s really cool.

We’ll have periodic updates of the Ole Miss/Binghamton game today (it’s 2-1 Rebs in the 6th at the time of this posting), as well as other pertinent goings on around the country.  Then we’ll have timely updates and maybe even true play x play for the State/W&M game tonight at 7pm.

So, please join us for that and talk your asses off during the game in the comments section below.  I get bored talking to myself. 🙂

Let’s Go Pack…Beat the Tribe!!!!

    Go. Pack. Go.

No Rodon, and we lose today. No question. Hopefully we were just saving up our hits for Sunday’s clincher. Knew that Carlos didn’t need any stinking run support.

Wuf…thought seriously about heading to Cola today, but I’m trying to get ready to leave for Seattle, Glacier, Calgary, Victoria, BC in a week and needed to do some yard work…

Which ended up with me fighting with a freakin’ 6 foot snake(who lost the fight).

You’re still my Wolfpack good luck charm for State baseball!! When you do the threads, we win and I don’t have to say a thing…

I think I’m still trying to recover from the 18 inning game..

Tiggers have to beat Liberty tomorrow to get to the Cocks…

^^ No doubt. Had some discussions with some others about whether Rodon being held for a possible Sunday matchup with Ole Miss would have been better way to go.

The consensus seemed to be that holding him might be better, considering our bullpen. But tonight, with only 1 run scored, bullpen mighta been too little too late.

Glad Rodon went tonight. Sometimes you’re good. Sometimes you’re lucky. Tonight, maybe a bit of both.

Rice nursing a narrow 1-0 lead vs the Ducks, top 7th.

    Snap, crackle and Pop.

    Get it? Rice????

    Aw c’mon!!!! That was clever……

Never hold out the ace for game 3 of a tourney (4 team, DE): Going 2-0 is a huge advantage in that even if you lose after that, the pitching matchup is a 4 versus whatever slop the team on their 5th game has left. Plus, it makes a lot of assumptions- like Ole Miss was going to lose game 1- don’t discount pitcher preparation routine. Rodon had prepared for game 2, don’t jerk him around 24 hours beforehand when you see Miss lose. Pitchers are nuts like that.

    Never?

Final 1-0 we win, final 1-0 Oregon loses. Yessssss!!!!!!!

Wuf- Yes, If you set up the rotation like that you may get eliminated without him throwing a pitch. If you keep moving the start to get the matchup you want, you’ll reduce his effectiveness most likely- these (weirdos) have a set routine 🙂

    Rice Rice baby.

It looks like the only #1 seeds not 2-0 are Oregon and VPI.

Hope today is good for the Pack.

I’m curious as to whether Avent told both Stone and Jernigan to prep like it is a start today, or has made up his mind (I am actually wrestling with this)- Stone would be for Ole Miss, Jernigan for W&M based on lineup composition. W&M’s lineup actually made the decision to pitch Rodon in game 2 easy- ridiculously righty laden (not that Rodon would have had trouble, but more favorable for our RHPs- note that not one lefty threw for us).

If I had to pick one, I go Stone knowing that the bullpen is so rested that even if you lose today, you have a full force for an if needed Monday game.

Personally, I would love to see us leading comfortably enough that Bergquist can get on the field- not the best numbers (being nice), but always one of my favorites. Had a spectacular ACC tourney a couple of years back.

^ Yep I know he’s one of your favorites DBP. Even made the comment to the ‘Dog during Friday’s game that you were about to get a wish when they showed him getting up to PH.

Then of course the situation changed and he didn’t get his AB.

Woke up to the news of Oregon’s loss – woohoo!

Several other factors in play, too. One of our best relievers went 4+ Friday night and was presumably unavailable. Generally speaking, makes most sense to save bullpen in game 2 anyway (so full arsenal available for game 3).

Plus, losing in Saturday’s winners’ bracket is actually the WORST Sunday position to be in, other than eliminated. Quick turnaround from Saturday night to Sunday early afternoon, with DH on tap if you manage to win. You MUST go all out to win your second game.

Now it’s Oregon that’s in the soup. The stars align nicely to host that Super Regional after all. Tonight, we are all Rice fans!

Yep, more about that coming up in today’s entry, which I am putting the finishing touches on now in fact.

Vandy and Illinois was interesting until the bunt and error, then it was all over. And the danged Cocks gave up a shutout!

    Here’s to Liberty today!!!

Our bats need to wake up from here on out. Pitching does win championships but we still need to score more runs when we move further in the tournament.

  17. Gene 06/02/2013 at 12:20 PM #

Tuffy, we got six hits. That’s not terrible. What killed us was situational awareness.

Guys getting thrown out at second by a good pick off move by the pitcher or the catcher recovering from a wild pitch.

If we’d managed those situations better, we should’ve had 1, if not 2 more runs in the game.

La duca 100% right. That’s a straight steal situation. No need to protect runner. More than just bad luck at work
