Pack9 will have to avoid Omaha’s paranormal activity tonight

As the Wolfpack’s 8pm match up with UCLA slowly approaches I continue to grow more nervous. So, the following evidence of a paranormal force field of ghosts tripping UNC players at the College World Series was a nice distraction for me this afternoon! Hat tip to our sister blog in the USA Today digital properties network, ForTheW!n

And 44Rules, who on the bench do you think Avent should have used as a pinch hitter, and for whom should that person have hit? It’s not like Mickey Mantle’s progeny is occupying a rally-cap for our team.

Avent has definitely managed games more poorly then tonight’s. I watched the postgame presser on ESPNU, but I didn’t hear the questions I thought should’ve been asked. But I’m still scratching my head over Armstrong running home on the overthrow in the 3rd. Hell, he had to hold at 2nd to see if Turner’s ball gets through the hole, he’s standing flat footed on the bag at 3rd. I don’t know if he was sent or ran on his own, but he had no chance unless the ball carom’s way up the line.

On another note, I’m not picking on the kid, but the 3 hole is basically an automatic out when hitting from the left side. I’m about 99% sure that his only knocks since playing Presbyterian College have come from the right side. He looks far quicker to the ball and sharper from the right side than left. Long, mechanical swing, that looks off balance. Hips open, bad drags behind. No way should he hit 3. Great kid, tough night, don’t want to risk deflating him at this point by moving him down, but he just gives you nothing from the left side right now.

Maybe the weather will be fair Thursday and packalum44 will join us in watching the Pack beat the Dancing Fairies again.

Whiteshoes, on the one replay I saw, I believe Armstrong was looking at and responding to the Pack batter at the plate who was waving him in after the passed ball. That batter, I don’t believe, saw the rebound off the wall that basically line drove the ball right back to the catcher.

Hey, we can send the Heels packing. Can’t ask for more than that at this late stage in the season. Take care of business and we are one step closer. Just need to regroup.

Step off the ledge folks. Not over yet.

Sure, we’ll have to do it the hard way now, but with the way the games are scheduled it’s easier than it could be. No two game days. If the big hoss can be effective on 3 days’ rest (he only threw 108 pitches sunday, a mere warm up for him) then we can get right back on track.

As for second guessing of things, that’s normal. But a couple of different bounces last night and the questionables are moot. Also, be mindful that not all managerial decisions bring the desired outcomes but that doesn’t make them wrong. About the only thing I really question from last night is not having Sasser warmed and ready since it was unlikely Jernigan was going further than the 5th anyway even best case. But then again, Sasser wasn’t exactly lights out when he came in either, so there’s that.

And it ain’t like we got Gwynn, Carew and Rose sitting on the bench waiting to jump into the batters box for the PH.

I’ve had my own second guessing of Avent and Co. at times no doubt. But on the full season of work, I don’t see even Weaver or Leyland having gotten this team farther. Just saying.

Tough loss but don’t give up on this team.

And in light of the Omaha spirits, perhaps a “Shadow People” post on the forum could bring a little revival there.

I don’t second guess the management of the game last night. I think we got some bad breaks on a couple of bounces of the ball. If a couple of those go the other way, then we win that one easily. That’s baseball.

If I had a criticism, it was that I don’t think we batted smartly. Maybe that was management and maybe it was the players, but we took the low strike 1 pitch seemingly every time, and we swung on the high “ball” pitch every time. Granted, the high pitches are probably what looked hittable after staring at so many low ones. Baseball is hard, so I’m not going to fault them too much. It’s amazing anyone can ever put the bat on the ball.

I felt that the strike zone was a bit wacky. Those were some really, really low strikes that UCLA was throwing. That was only true about 1/2 the time when we were pitching. By the end I was frustrated, so I’m guessing the players were too.

I also felt like we lost the game with the tag out at home. We’d come out flat but finally built some momentum. When it evaporated, the wind kind of came out of our sails.

My hat’s off to UCLA though. Two straight games they’ve beaten obviously better teams. They can’t hit worth a lick, but they really can pitch. They can also slow a game down and basically put everyone to sleep which makes it harder for the other team to build momentum. Hopefully we get a chance to face them again.
