Pack9 Looks to Close Out Owls, Head to Omaha – Game Two Thread

blockSbaseball

In a game that looked like hopes were dimming (to put it mildly), Wolfpack Baseball was able to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the 9th Saturday to pull out a come from behind victory.  The game winner was of course courtesy of one Mr. Jake Fincher, who pulled the ball hard into left field for the winning RBI single to give the Pack the 4-3 walk off victory.

Hopefully the rest of the team didn’t hurt Jakie too badly as they chased him down post-game.

Of course, none of that matters if Logan Ratledge doesn’t drop a beauty of a bunt, squeezing Brett Williams from third to tie the game at three in the first place.

Check out the highlights below, but beware of Paul LoDuca’s eyebrows…don’t look directly at them….

A shaky Carlos Rodon (which is still better than 95% of the rest of the pitchers out there) kept the Pack close enough but took a no decision.  Josh Easley took the victory (7-2).

Box Score

Saturday’s win put the Wolfpack (48-14) one win away from someplace they haven’t been in 45 years.  Omaha.  Win one of the next two and close out the Owls, and that drought will be broken.

Game Two between the Pack and the Owls gets going at 4pm on Sunday on ESPNU and ESPN3.

Nitpicky details: Pack will be the road team for Sunday’s game.

Tickets Punched

Should the Pack win one of the next two and get to Omaha, two of the teams which would be in their bracket already punched their tickets Saturday night.

UCLA topped CS Fullerton to complete a 2-0 sweep of the Titans on the road and will thus claim the #5 seed slot in Omaha.

Their first round opponent will be the #4 seeded Tigers from LSU, who dispatched Oklahoma in impressive fashion in Baton Rouge to dump the Sooners, 2-0.

Elsewhere Sunday

North vs South – Chapel Hill Game Two – 1pm, ESPN (Heels lead ‘Cocks 1-0)

FSU vs Indiana – Tallahassee Game Two – 1pm, ESPNU (Hoosiers lead ‘Noles 1-0)

Vandy vs ‘Ville – Nashville Game Two – 4pm, ESPN (Cards lead ‘Dores 1-0)

UVa vs Miss.St. – Charlottesville Game Two – 7pm, ESPN2 (Bulldogs lead ‘Hoos 1-0)

Oregon St vs K State – Corvallis Game Two – 10pm, ESPNU (Cats lead Beavers 1-0)

So, use this thread to talk it up on Sunday…really loving the chatter.

We’ll do the same as usual with updates and probably pseudo play x play in the comments.

Let’s Go Pack!!! Close it out TODAY!!!

Avent out dunces that joker over at unc whose actually gone to omaha

We have three very good relievers that can alternate every 2-3 innings tomorrow. With rain in the forecast. Rice’s best pitchers – by far – will all be spent. I like our chances.

If you’ve ever had a conversation with Avent, you do get a certain feeling about sharper tools.

Whiteshoes – I belive he’s talking about the arms available being set up for tomorrow. Even with the accurate assessment of being outplayed/coached, it’s tough to argue that State’s best arms will be fresh for tomorrow. Which is looking more and more likely that they will be needed.

Even the guys on ESPN3 are saying WTF(assuming it’s different announcers)!!

  7. tjfoose1 06/09/2013 at 7:09 PM #

    4-1 going into 9th.

  8. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 7:09 PM #

F8. runner doubled off 2nd ends it.

Heading to 9th Pack needs at least 3 runs in 3 outs or else a rubber match on Monday

Williams family are the ones on the right of the screen, front row. Pitcher Williams

Woeck was the right guy to use for the situation. The correct odds play (behind late) is NOT burning your ace relievers. That would have been stupid.

I’m hoping for a later game tomorrow or a rainout and push to Tuesday. I don’t get to Seattle until after 3 or so Eastern time…

  12. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 7:11 PM #

I know exactly what he meant. Holding pitchers. Dumb. Same reason you don’t hold Rodin for game 2

Armsrong leads off the Pack’s 9th reaching by HBP…

finally leaning into pitch to get a baserunner

  15. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 7:13 PM #

FC forces Armtrong at 2nd, Ratledge reaches first with one away….

  16. elvislives 06/09/2013 at 7:14 PM #

If the bats aren’t going to push across more than 1 run, why quibble about which pitcher should be called from the pen? If the Pack scores 2 runs then your point is well taken Whiteshoes, if not it’s just complaining about the rain.

  17. BJD95 06/09/2013 at 7:14 PM #

They wasted men on base yesterday, we wasted them today. Other than questionable bunt calls early, I didn’t see much coaching/strategy failures or strokes of Rice genius (asking for solo homers, I guess).

  18. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 7:14 PM #

Turner singles up the middle, 2 on one away…

  19. highstick 06/09/2013 at 7:15 PM #

If we win, it’s no credit to Avent…Send him down Avent Ferry Road!

  20. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 7:16 PM #

Wrong. You’re not burning arms. And the worst of the dugout decisions came while we were at the plate

  21. highstick 06/09/2013 at 7:16 PM #

BTW..uniforms are much more pleasing and really more “throw back” to day…I like…

  22. highstick 06/09/2013 at 7:18 PM #

    Wheeeeeeeeeeee hoooooooooo!!!

  23. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 7:18 PM #

    Rice mistakes. I’ll take it

  24. BJD95 06/09/2013 at 7:18 PM #

There is a correct math to how you use pitchers. I think we’ve followed it.

    Fincher!!

  25. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 7:18 PM #

Fincher goes the other way, RF slips…two runs score….Fincher at 3rd…still one away

    4-3, Pack still batting…
