Pack9 Looks to Close Out Owls, Head to Omaha – Game Two Thread

blockSbaseball

In a game that looked like hopes were dimming (to put it mildly), Wolfpack Baseball was able to scratch out two runs in the bottom of the 9th Saturday to pull out a come from behind victory.  The game winner was of course courtesy of one Mr. Jake Fincher, who pulled the ball hard into left field for the winning RBI single to give the Pack the 4-3 walk off victory.

Hopefully the rest of the team didn’t hurt Jakie too badly as they chased him down post-game.

Of course, none of that matters if Logan Ratledge doesn’t drop a beauty of a bunt, squeezing Brett Williams from third to tie the game at three in the first place.

Check out the highlights below, but beware of Paul LoDuca’s eyebrows…don’t look directly at them….

A shaky Carlos Rodon (which is still better than 95% of the rest of the pitchers out there) kept the Pack close enough but took a no decision.  Josh Easley took the victory (7-2).

Pack Walks Off, One Step Closer to Omaha (GoPack.com)

Box Score

Saturday’s win put the Wolfpack (48-14) one win away from someplace they haven’t been in 45 years.  Omaha.  Win one of the next two and close out the Owls, and that drought will be broken.

Game Two between the Pack and the Owls gets going at 4pm on Sunday on ESPNU and ESPN3.

Nitpicky details: Pack will be the road team for Sunday’s game.

Tickets Punched

Should the Pack win one of the next two and get to Omaha, two of the teams which would be in their bracket already punched their tickets Saturday night.

UCLA topped CS Fullerton to complete a 2-0 sweep of the Titans on the road and will thus claim the #5 seed slot in Omaha.

Their first round opponent will be the #4 seeded Tigers from LSU, who dispatched Oklahoma in impressive fashion in Baton Rouge to dump the Sooners, 2-0.

Elsewhere Sunday

North vs South – Chapel Hill Game Two – 1pm, ESPN (Heels lead ‘Cocks 1-0)

FSU vs Indiana – Tallahassee Game Two – 1pm, ESPNU (Hoosiers lead ‘Noles 1-0)

Vandy vs ‘Ville – Nashville Game Two – 4pm, ESPN (Cards lead ‘Dores 1-0)

UVa vs Miss.St. – Charlottesville Game Two – 7pm, ESPN2 (Bulldogs lead ‘Hoos 1-0)

Oregon St vs K State – Corvallis Game Two – 10pm, ESPNU (Cats lead Beavers 1-0)

So, use this thread to talk it up on Sunday…really loving the chatter.

We’ll do the same as usual with updates and probably pseudo play x play in the comments.

Let’s Go Pack!!! Close it out TODAY!!!

I understand the move but of urn tends to leave the ball up. Two balls already hammered

  2. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 10:24 PM #

Stone was always going to get the ball if there was agame 3. We’re fine on as. Got any number of folks who can throw 2-3 tomorrow

  3. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 10:25 PM #

    K swinging…2-3 on the putout…going to the 14th.

Clyde takes one in the left kidney to reach with two outs…

    FC from Williams ends it.

A 2 run dinger would be terrible right about now.

I don’t get the hate for Avent. He’s built this team to be the best we’ve had since I’ve known the name ‘NC State’. He’s brought in the best pitcher in America. The least decent coach we had left to win multiple Natty’s at another school. Seriously, wtf are you guys comparing about?

  7. redwolf92 06/09/2013 at 10:33 PM #

Pfft. Im watching until the end despite the impending NC State #%!?

  8. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 10:33 PM #

Ogburn needs to sit the bottom half down in order. Not sure he can get through rice’s top 3 unscathed

  9. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 10:35 PM #

K swinging for out number one….

    Fly out…

Weak comebacker to pitcher ends it…going to 15th.

A lot are sore (me included) at losing Ray Tanner to USC many years ago. He won 2 NCs with the cocks…and that could have been us with the right AD.

Avent is fine…making a Super Regional every other year and a CWS this year will cement him as a personal fave.

Rally caps. Folded with the bill facing forward.

Avent isn’t a bad coach. He’s also not a great one. In pressure situations, he tends to over manage or just badly manage a game. He doesn’t really appear to have a philosophy about how you play the game, and it shows in the little things that are required to be excellent

  13. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 10:41 PM #

    Need runs here badly IMO

  15. Whiteshoes67 06/09/2013 at 10:46 PM #

I’m worried about ogburn getting through this group.

  16. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 10:47 PM #

4-3…out number one…nice play by Ratledge, nice dig by Senay….

    Stringer Ks swinging…out number two…

Ogburn has that hook working….K swinging on Cook…going to the 16th.

    Ogburn looking tough. Good stuff

  18. redwolf92 06/09/2013 at 10:52 PM #

Rice really has shown NO ability to do anything but the long ball. I like where this is going…

  19. bill.onthebeach 06/09/2013 at 10:52 PM #

    Turner grounds out 3U…one away…

Austin goes down looking to end it….going to bottom 16.

  21. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 11:01 PM #

F9, out number one for Rice…

Rice’s Byrd squibs one thru the right side to reach with one away….

  22. NCSU88 06/09/2013 at 11:01 PM #

Unless we’re trying to use up Simms, we need to swing at some of those first pitches.

  23. BJD95 06/09/2013 at 11:03 PM #

The 18th inning is really gonna leave a mark…

  24. Wufpacker 06/09/2013 at 11:06 PM #

Hell yes…strike ’em out throw ’em out DP ends it.
