Big Couple of Days for State Athletics

Copeland Cleared to Play in 2013

So just as I was finishing berating that NCAA on twitter for the punishment (or lack there-of) to the University of Oregon, the NCAA drops some good news to the way of NC State fans as West Virginia transfer Travares Copeland tweeted the following Travares Copeland Tweet.

The speedster from Florida had decided to transfer from WVa because of an ill family member, who has recently passed, and instantly connected with Coach D and the rest of the staff. So much so he canceled the rest of his visits and committed to NC State. He’s already enrolled at State and has excited the coaches with what he’s been able to do in his short time here. I assume you’ll see him lined up in the slot for Matt Canada’s spread offense but the converted high school quarterback has a skill set that could see him all over the field.

This is a big win for State in an area where we have notoriously lost battles with the NCAA and immediately it made me think of this clip.

Here is a clip of Copeland’s Highlight reel from high school.

State in the NBA Draft

It’s been a long time since State fans have had a rooting interest in the NBA Draft, five years to be exact, but that will all change tonight with 4 potential players up to be drafted. Lorenzo Brown, CJ Leslie, Richard Howell and Scott Wood all hope to be taken in tonight’s draft. According to NBADraft.net‘s mock draft Brown and Leslie are projecting to go #37 and #38 respectively. As for Howell & Wood both provide a unique skill set but according to scouts don’t have the complete package, so let’s hope a couple teams give 2 of State’s all-time favorites a shot. Earlier in the season I was able to talk to a scout for the Heat and while he was there watching Brown he mentioned he wasn’t a huge fan of Leslie’s body language and that Howell was the heart and soul of this team. He also went on to say that if Howell had Leslie’s body, he’d be a top 10 pick for sure. Probably not something we all don’t know but he was able to pick up on that very quickly which I thought was interesting.

Here’s a few draft videos that we’ve found and even though they all feature JR Reid, a Hole, I’ll post them because he does a good job breaking down our guys:

How do you all feel about our guys’ chance tonight in the draft? Who do you compare their games most closely to?

We’ve learned this weekend is setting up to be another big weekend for State football recruiting. We’ve talked about it in some recent posts but stay tuned this weekend for more!

Could very well be a huge night for the Pack. We could have the most players drafted of any. I think Brown will go late first round, and Leslie and Howell in the second. I don’t think Wood will be drafted, but hope he is.

I have an idea that the 4 State players won’t be real happy after tonight’s draft. Brown might get picked in the 2nd round, but Leslie and Howell probably won’t. Wood, who I still think has the best shot at the NBA of the 4 Pack players, may not get selected tonight either, but I really believe that with his key skill of 3-point shooting, somebody will give him a shot. I just don’t see the other 3 as having a particular skill, let alone a talent, that separates them from the field.

And I think those who keep saying that Seth Curry won’t be drafted tonight are off their rockers.

I wish Miami had a draft pick. I’d like to see them take Howell. Chris Andersen is getting old, and Richard is the Birdman without all the feathers.

I’m excited to see how this staff utilizes Copeland’s ability. You have to watch the tremendous downfield block in his video at the 1:24 mark. It is vicious!!

Zo has really slipped, which I can understand given the meh season. Calvin shall always remain an enigma.

Not having a place for players the caliber of Rodney Monroe, Randolph Childress, and Talibeard is one of the reasons I don’t consider the NBA a sport, but rather “sports-themed entertainment” – kinda like pro rasslin.’

oh, and the Copeland thing is very good news. We could use a skill position playmaker in the worst way. Will at least make the games more fun to watch!

    Absolutely in a Beej mindset.

I don’t wish to sound critical, so remind me where the NCAA screwed State, if you will.

DT doesn’t count …different place and time.

BJD, Do you think Copeland might raise our team speed rating from poor to below average?

The Copeland news is very good indeed. Looks like things are coming together very nicely for Coach Doeren and staff.

Hopefully they all get drafted, but I see Wood getting left out of tonites party. I will miss Howell. I can say I developed a man crush for Howell proudly over the last few years. I will miss Wood and Howell the most. I’ll never forget their reactions after defeating Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament last season. I even attempted growing a beard this season, but my alopecia denied me of my manly rights.

I’ve read some recent, positive articles about CJ. I think he’s going to go higher than you may expect.

    Bennett goes numero uno. Wow!

  13. burnbarn 06/27/2013 at 8:02 PM #

    and Zeller to the Tarhornets!

  14. Wulfpack 06/27/2013 at 8:04 PM #

This is the craziest draft ever. And the BuzzCats again are morons. Just hope the Pack get drafted.

  15. Wulfpack 06/27/2013 at 8:10 PM #

Alex Len goes 5th to Phoenix. Noel and McLemore still on the board.

The NBA draft… what a train wreck..

    Great news on Copeland.

  17. Wulfpack 06/27/2013 at 10:02 PM #

Larkin and Plumlee go. Come on, time for Brown to go soon.

  18. Wulfpack 06/27/2013 at 10:19 PM #

Bullock to the Clips. Brown and Leslie both on the board as the best available late in the first round.

  19. lush 06/27/2013 at 10:39 PM #

” and Richard is the Birdman without all the feathers.”

Or the height. Birdman in the NBA, is not comparable to Howell in the ACC.

I figure we get three drafted in the second round.

  20. Wulfpack 06/27/2013 at 10:50 PM #

No Pack players drafted in the first round. Ouch.

  21. Wufpacker 06/27/2013 at 10:53 PM #

Doesn’t the NBA have any photogenic folks in the front office?

  22. nav 06/27/2013 at 10:54 PM #

Bet lo and cj are 2nd guessing their decision.

  23. PackerInRussia 06/27/2013 at 11:22 PM #

ESPN does not have Brown and Leslie as the best available. Brown is only the 4th best available PG according to them; Leslie has been the best available SF for a little while now, though.

  24. packalum44 06/27/2013 at 11:25 PM #

Wow Bulluck in the first round….I just don’t see him contributing much in the NBA.

Didn’t see Zeller at all last year, but it really doesn’t matter who we draft….as long as Jordan owns the team, it will be a train wreck. He’s the Lee Fowler of NBA owners.

  25. lush 06/27/2013 at 11:38 PM #

Not looking good for the pack.

They all have good skills, but none are great at anything. You have to be great to play in the NBA.

They could all still make a roster.
