Raleigh Regional

Wolfpack Baseball and Doak Field has been selected as a regional host site for the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the second straight year.

The Pack barely misses out on a national seed.  If I may wax philosophic for a moment….

Losing 2 of 3 to FSU at home slit our throats, no doubt.  That, coupled with finishing a half game behind the ‘Noles in the Atlantic Division did us in.  We finished with a better RPI than they did (#7 vs #8) against a tougher schedule.  In fact, if you look at us against the top 8 national seeds, aside from Carolina, we are the only other team to earn our top 8 RPI against a top 10 schedule.

Thus, letting FSU punk us in Raleigh is the only good explanation.  Oh well, time to move on.

The Raleigh Regional is paired with the Eugene Regional.  Thus, should the Pack emerge unscathed from Raleigh, they will likely go on the road (big time) to the pacific northwest to Eugene, Oregon to face the Ducks for the Super Regionals, should they hold serve at home.

The Pack could still host a Super Regional in Raleigh should the Ducks fail to advance from Eugene.  So….GO RICE!!!!…GO SAN FRANCISCO!!!!…GO SD STATE!!!! (Sorry Ducks…nothing personal).

The Pack will welcome as its guests for the Raleigh Regional, Ole Miss, William and Mary and Binghamton.

The regional rounds are a double elimination bracket.  Games for the Raleigh Regional will get underway this Friday, May 31st:

Day One

  • Game One – #2 Ole Miss vs #3 William and Mary – 2pm
  • Game Two – #1 NC State vs #4 Binghamton – 7pm

Day Two (Saturday June 1) will feature the winners and losers from day one games facing one another:

  • Game Three – (Loser’s Bracket) – 2pm
  • Game Four – (Winner’s Bracket) – 7pm

Day Three (Sunday June 2) will feature two elimination games:

  • Game Five – (Winner Game Three vs Loser Game Four) – 1pm
  • Game Six – (Winner Game Four vs Winner Game Five) – 6pm

Day Four (Monday June 3) if necessary, will determine the winner

  • Game Seven – (Winner Game Six vs Loser Game Six) – 7pm

Forgive me for not knowing this… after State wins the Regional, they would then play a best of 3 with “probably” Oregon. And the winner of that, again, State, goes to the CWS? Are the teams reseeded in the CWS?

@C’Dog – I’ll need to see some photo evidence of your modeling days. Instagram it!

I reckon we didn’t get that super was our consistent losses to the best teams. No clue if Oregon was any better.. but that is how they roll in basketball.

I swear, Ply, if I can figure out how to do it…I put it right here. For real.

I so hope we have no more losses of our own doings. Looks promising, and maybe Rice will do us a favor, and we can stay home, for the next round. And on a side note, just want to again commend the women’s softball team for their success this year under the new coach. We got knocked out by Tennessee, who beat Alabama, and is heading to the Softball College World Series. We almost had them in the first game. and too tired in the second, but a great year none the less. Now it is time for the baseball team to make some noise. Go Pack!

    we get a good-for-us bracket.
Do. Or do not. There is no try.

I agree with GA. I was surprised that Oregon is the #8 seed but they are the easiest route to Omaha. But first things first, we need to win our region. All of the other teams are good, or they wouldn’t have gotten here. And if Mississippi wins their first round matchup against Bill and Mary, then you probably have a showdown between 2 of the best pitchers in baseball:

    Rodon vs. Wahl

Wahl is 9-0 and has an ERA under 2. Impressive.

Don’t pack those bags to Eugene yet. Pull for Bill and Mary to upset Ole Miss on Friday to make the Pack’s run a little less stressful.

I shouldn’t say this, but this is merely a FYI. The way the CWS is set up, the first round matchups are as follows (and there are 2 four team mini double elimination tournaments. The numbers are the national seeds):

    1 vs 8
    4 vs 5

    2 vs 7
    3 vs 6

The two winners play a best 2 of 3 for the title.

Hypothetically, if State wins the Raleigh regional and then wins its Super Regional, they would play the winner of the Chapel Hill-Columbia Super Regional. Yes, that means that State would probably face UNC-CHeat in the first round in Omaha.

You could then expect a 21-inning duel between State and UNC.

Hey Wuf, great summary as usual. I was camping this weekend but was listening to the game. I probably wouldn’t be following it if it weren’t for all the analysis and storylines I get on this site. By the way, I noticed your comment, “wence I came”. Are you a traveling man by chance?

chop said: “I reckon we didn’t get that super was our consistent losses to the best teams. No clue if Oregon was any better.. but that is how they roll in basketball.”

    vs. Top 50 RPI:
    State: 18-10
    Oregon: 6-10

That’s right, State played 12 more games against the top 50 RPI teams… and won them all.

Let that sink in for a minute.

On top of that, most of the games we lost to “best” teams were lost when Turner was out. Injuries to key players are supposed to be considered by the committee. I believe we were 39-7 with Turner playing and 5-7 without him this season, can anyone confirm?

Baseball America calls out the committee for their seeding, and specifically for making Oregon a national seed over NC State, in this article:

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/field-of-64-reaction-and-analysis/

In short, while they think the committee mostly got the right field in place, they have a lot of criticism of the committee for their seeding and the inconsistent way they applied difference criteria. They also call out the committee for including Texas A&M and say they only appear to have made it because their AD was on the committee.

On a different note, thanks for the great baseball coverage this year. I don’t make it to many games or watch much, but I love reading the coverage and even the play by play when I’m by my computer but not a TV or radio.

Thanks for the kind words folks. They’re greatly appreciated.

@6-4Sequoia…I do love to travel, prefer the road-tripping kind actually (no such thing as flyover states IMHO) when one can pop into an impromptu minor league park or the like, and hope to be able to begin doing so again very soon. That particular comment however, was more figurative and due to that whole “…better part of valor” concept, I should probably just leave it at that. The desert boy knows when to shut his piehole…usually. 😀

@Tau837…your numbers re: Turner injury are correct.

Assuming the UNC 18 inning game and our resulting failure to make the ACC Tournament final had some implication on us not getting the guaranteed Super, keep this in mind: UNC started the guy in that game who miraculously made 4 As in one summer session to become academically eligible after being sent home for grades the Spring before. That summer, 2011, also coincided with the most ridiculous of Af-Am classes taught by the now jilted head of the department who emailed his “shock” in how quickly classes added without notice to the regular student body filled up with, ironically enough, athletes.

Go figure. For any people out there thinking UNC hasn’t “won”, check no further than what went down by the NCAA baseball selection committee this weekend.

Looking forward to the Regional games here on Friday.

Just one question about the game the other night. Did we ever try to bunt the lead off batter in any of the 18 innings? I do not remember exactly but I tend to think not. Seems that we either struck out or it was a pop out other than the hits we had that did score the one run. Not many if any ground balls hit. I can say the same for unc, but we did not look to play small ball and that to me made the difference. Seems we got caught up in how unc plays swinging for the fences and not what we do best.

Don’t get wrong. We can hit the ball just as well as anyone. I would think maybe out of the 3 or 4 times we had the bases loaded we might put the squeeze bunt on and actually make them have to handle a ground ball.

  16. Tau837 05/28/2013 at 1:33 PM #

^Turner tried to bunt for a hit once, I think with the bases empty but not necessarily the leadoff batter in the inning. It was a terrible bunt, and he was tagged out by the pitcher.
