ACC considering permanent late-season rivalry games

CBSSports.com:

The ACC is considering the creation of permanent rivalry games for all of its football teams on the last weekend of the regular season starting in 2014, according to several sources.

The league could announce an expanded “rivals week” lineup soon, according to one membership source, while North Carolina-NC State is considered a possible matchup.

Six teams currently have annual rivals on the last weekend of the season: Virginia Tech-Virginia, Florida State-Florida, Clemson-South Carolina, Georgia Tech-Georgia and Wake Forest-Vanderbilt. The Demon Deacons reportedly are scheduled out with Vanderbilt until 2015 and, according to Vanderbilt associate athletics director Kevin Colon, could renew the series.

That leaves tenured members Miami, Boston College, NC State, UNC and Duke along with three incoming schools — Pitt and Syracuse (2013) and Louisville (2014).

From 2008-13, the five tenured schools have played or scheduled at least three different teams on the last weekend of the season.

The only rivalry games you can cobble together out of those teams is State or Duke vs. Holes, and Miami/BC.

I recall TOB was actually against playing U*NC at the end of the year due to the possibility of a rematch in Charlotte the next weekend…

Overall, I am glad to hear that the Carolina game may become an annual tradition during rivalry week regardless of how it (or IF it ever) impacts the ACC Championship game.

Idea: Could Louisville & UK work something out pitting their game at the end of the year too? Then maybe break Wake away from that contract with Vandy…that way the games are State-U*NC, Pitt-Cuse, Miami-BC-, Duke-Wake…that’d be fine

Debbie Yow has already said we are playing UNC the last weekend of the year starting next year for the foreseeable future.

Wow, Swofford way ahead of the curve here. What a novel concept.

Now when do we get an ACC network. It is time, and we certainly have the revenue to make it happen?

I’m not sure I understand just how the ACC can dictate “rivalry games” involving teams from the SEC vs ACC teams. I always thought “rivalry week” involved teams in the same conference. And why does this so-called rivalry game have to be played on Thanksgiving weekend? I always have scheduling problems with the home games at CF on the Saturday after November, plus the students are away on break.

I think the ACC should designate the Duke-State and Carolina-Wake games as their rivalry games, insuring that the Big Four schools can play each other EVERY season instead of maybe just once every 4 years.

Why would Wake fans want to play Vanderbilt every season when they’re not playing Carolina but every 4th and 5th year? Ditto for State and Duke.

As far as playing Carolina, I’d much rather play the Heels in October or early November than I had in late November, when the weather will almost surely be cold, especially if it’s a night game.

Why doesn’t John Swofford simply ASK the fans of each team who they think their rivals are instead of making it up as he goes? We play UNC every year anyway, so just you watch Swofford try to create a State-Syracuse “rivalry”.

Let’s once and for all get Duke back on our football schedule every season. Looks like a good opportunity to me.

We play UNC every year because they are designated as our coastal partner rivalry.
