Rodney Purvis to Transfer from NC State [Updated 4:10pm]

In today’s episode of ‘How NC State Turns’, freshman guard Rodney Purvis will be announcing that he is transferring from NC State.  Purvis came to State as a 5-star All-Everything, McDonald’s All-American. Albeit inconsistently, Purvis showed flashes of why he was so highly recruited during his freshman season. Rodney hit the freshman wall and eventually struggled down the stretch, creating situation where fellow freshman, TJ Warren, replaced Purvis in the starting lineup.

Now that Mark Gottfried has lost 5 players from last season’s Wolfpack squad, (two graduates, two prematurely to the NBA draft, and now Purvis to transfer) Warren will now be the most experienced starter returning for next season (14 starts) and will be counted on heavily. With Purvis’ departure, NC State currently has only seven scholarship players currently projected to be in the program for 2013-2014, three of which have not yet set foot on a college campus.To give you a quick indication of the massive change in the Wolfpack’s composition, The Wolfpacker’s Ryan Tice tweeted the following:

Lack of playing time is often cited as the biggest reason for transfers, but seeing how Purvis was going to be looking at 35+ minutes next season this move is baffling. These things often come down to parenting or kids growing up in an entitlement society and quitting at the first sign of adversity, but I’ll leave that speculation to you all.

Based on Rodney’s newest twitter follower, UCONN coach Kevin Ollie, (screenshot attached) there is speculation that RP will end up playing for the Huskies, but I wouldn’t count out Missouri.

I always saw Purvis as a Julius Hodge type of player – someone that loved NC State and would probably be here about three years, during which he would work hard and still have a good time while doing it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at Georgia State eventually.

The following is the current configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s basketball program. It goes without saying that the potential addition of JUCO transfer Desmond Lee and at least one, if not two, 5th year graduate transfers would do wonders for Gottfried and the Wolfpack basketball program about now.

Senior Class
(1) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Junior Class
(2) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sat out 2012-2103

Sophomore Class
(3) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(4) TJ Warren (F)

Freshman Class – 2013 Commits
(5) Anthony Barber (PG)
(6) Kyle Washington (4F/5C)
(7) BeeJay Anya (4F/5C)
(8) Departure of Scott Wood
(9) Departure of Richard Howell
(10) Departure of Lorenzo Brown
(11) Departure of CJ Leslie
(12) Departure of Rodney Purvis

2014 Commits
(13) Caleb Martin (wing) (Open scholarship)
(1) Cody Martin (wing) (scheduled departure of Vandenberg)

    While it’s possible that we’ll be OK next year (I have no idea who will be on the roster yet, and neither does anyone else, so “possible” is as good as it can get), there can be nothing good about fielding a team with three total returning scholarship players. Three. I do not recall this happening at any school – well – ever.

    Now, that being said, long-term, we still have the potential to be on the right path. While Rodney had his positives, as the year went on, he seemed to be part of the chemistry problem… so if his departure eliminates the last remnants of selfish play from this team, I’ll take the trade.

    Yep – next year’s potentially going to be brutal. Barring further departures, the future still looks bright enough…

    Some food for thought, Coach K and Dean-o were playing for National Titles by year six (they both lost). Roy was playing for a national title at Kansas within six years.

    That’s the legacy our rivals have at the coaching position and tradition of excellence they have built up.

    I don’t know if Gott can be that good, but if we want a program of the caliber of Duke and UNC-Cheat, we need who can be that good.

    I know in K’s case he came into a decent program with some players. Deano’s entry was just a bit before my time – even with the point shaving scandal I suspect he also started a bit ahead of Gott.
    We shall see if Gott is the man long term – so far I’m not upset, disappointed in last season for sure but not upset unlike some here. Back to back 20+ win seasons – not a bad feat.
    2 years from now if we are still having these conversations maybe time for a coaching change.

    The sky is falling, the sky is falling……..NOT!

    If you want to feel better about the upside go look at the list of guys we’re recruiting along with the Martin twins. We have interest in, and from, a great deal of very talented players in that class.

    Next year could very well be brutal. Or we might watch a young team mature and come together to be something special.

    If we can keep some guys in the program I have faith in Gott and staff to put together some very good teams in Raleigh.

    You’re only going to have an opportunity to play point guard if you demonstrate some skills or abilities to play the position, unless you end up somewhere they have no other choice but to play you there; but of course, you don’t really know that for sure, even if its promised, especially if you have to wait for two whole years to sniff the floor. That is twice as much time for them to find some to “back” you up, but guess what, its always an open competition.

    Josh Davis announces he’ll transfer from Tulane one day after Leslie says he’s gone.

    Think it’s too good to be true, but the coaching staff is going after him the hardest. We’ve backed off completely from big men prep players that we had offers and look content to use those for 2014 or possible transfers (plenty out there).

  8. highstick 04/02/2013 at 7:36 PM #

    Hell, guys, the Holes burned Dean in effigy! He couldn’t win a tourney for crap for several years. I can remember Purdue with Rick Mount burning Charley Scott’s Holes in the Final Four!

  9. TLeo 04/02/2013 at 7:52 PM #

    I think I saw where it is official…Davis got his release from Tulane.

  10. youchuck 04/02/2013 at 8:01 PM #

    It’s obvious why he left, in his opinion he wasn’t being used like he thought he should. Now part of that is on the coaching staff (they should’ve known how to best use him), part is on the player. Let’s be honest about Purvis, he was athletic, he sometimes played hard, but he was a shooting guard who could not shoot. He could not be on the court in the final minutes of a close game, because I shoot FT’s better than he does. This is on the coaching staff now it’s Harris, de Thaey and Purvis, all players they recruited and wanted that they have lost. Who really cares anyway, football is only 5 months away!!

    Has Josh Davis expressed interest in coming back and playing his senior year at State? He would be a great get IMO. I was not happy he left (or when anyone does), but I’m sure there may be more than meets the eye.

    He’s the type player we could really use next year. He’d be a perfect compliment to TJW. That, along, with the JUCO transfer, and I wouldn’t be that worried. Especially, when you add Turner to the mix of “experienced” players.

  12. tractor57 04/02/2013 at 8:16 PM #

    Couldn’t hit a jump shot or a free throw. Had his chance to shine when Zo went down. Maybe best for all he decided to transfer. I do wish RP well.

  13. JeremyH 04/02/2013 at 9:38 PM #

    I don’t know what Josh Davis has said himself, but I just looked him up. He grew two inches now 6’8, so he is no longer a tweener and officially a big, which is exactly what we need. If we get Davis, Lee, and don’t lose anyone else, I think that the sky is officially no longer falling, but that’s a bunch of ifs. It looks like Lee is an actual shooting guard that wants to actually be a shooting guard, so that’s good.

    http://packinsider.com/2013/04/tulanes-josh-davis-to-receive-his-release-return-to-state-in-the-cards/

    The article mentions Davis’s family is from and still in Raleigh and State was his dream place to play. He jetted once we landed Leslie, who is obviously NBA draft bound.

    It didn’t really help Purvis that he was competing for playing time with someone that had a knack for scoring from anywhere (buckets) and somehow they was borne of Corchiani and Steve Nash (WBS). But oh well.

    “Many of us have discussed Gott’s weaknesses but what a great improvement over where we have been and the ceiling, at least in the longer term, seems like it could be fairly high. ”

    We’ve definitely improved – but you can’t fall when you’re already on the floor…so we had nowhere to go but up.

    Look – I would feel better about our long term prospects if I saw kid committed to this program. Right now, I don’t…Since Gott has arrived, the following players who didn’t end the season starting have left before their eligibility expired:
    * Cook
    * Harris
    * Painter
    * TDT
    * Purvis

    The following PLAYER has returned:
    * Vandenberg

    Hopefully, Lewis will return. However, anyone who watched a game this year and has read who we have coming in would understand if he didn’t.

    Gott and staff have definitely eared another 2 years, but you’re ultimately going to be judged on how you do overall – and it’s too early to celebrate or cry for NC State basketball at this point.

    The good news is that there is still time to build our bench a pick up some quality players. To put it in terms most of us can understand – it’s 1:00 AM.

    Most of the elite talent is gone or paired up, but there’s a few prospects out there – and uh oh, someone you had a relationship with just walked in the door….There’s probably some long term prospects there, but there may not be interest (from either party.)

    Two AM is rapidly approaching…

    Guys, there is an impressive and under rated recruit that has NCSU listed as one of the schools he is considering but we haven’t made an offer to him. Why not??!!! His name is MiKyle Mcintosh and we could really use him next year. Check him out:

  20. NCStatefan 04/03/2013 at 4:59 PM #

    If we don’t get Lennard Freeman, we have to get Mikyle Mcintosh who looks to be on the same level as Lennard. Hopefully the coaches are still talking to them.

  21. NCStatefan 04/03/2013 at 5:07 PM #

    Not too far behind Lennard and Mikyle is Sidy Mohamed Djitte if we fail to get them. Sidy definitely looks better than a 2 star recruit. He is a 6′ 10″ shot blocker who moves well and can score a lot of points around the basket

  22. NCStatefan 04/03/2013 at 5:18 PM #

    Josh Davis played high above the rim at 6’6″ so at 6’8″ now he must really be a high flyer. His speed would keep us a team that is fast in transition.

  23. NCStatefan 04/03/2013 at 5:24 PM #

    It’s official! TJ Warren will return to NCSU for his sophomore season!

  24. wolffpride 04/03/2013 at 9:15 PM #

    Any scoop on Tyler Lewis? Also, looks like Dez Lee has a tough decision to make between us and Creighton, according to him…if we lose out to Creighton then seriously, something has got to give. I cant help but think of the JUCO big from last year who chose Texas A&M.

  25. Tau837 04/04/2013 at 8:45 AM #

    ^The JUCO big (Andrew Young) averaged 2.8 ppg and 2.9 rpg this year at Texas A&M. Not much of an impact there. I certainly hope Lee makes a stronger contribution than that if he joins the Pack.
