Rodney Purvis to Transfer from NC State [Updated 4:10pm]

In today’s episode of ‘How NC State Turns’, freshman guard Rodney Purvis will be announcing that he is transferring from NC State.  Purvis came to State as a 5-star All-Everything, McDonald’s All-American. Albeit inconsistently, Purvis showed flashes of why he was so highly recruited during his freshman season. Rodney hit the freshman wall and eventually struggled down the stretch, creating situation where fellow freshman, TJ Warren, replaced Purvis in the starting lineup.

Now that Mark Gottfried has lost 5 players from last season’s Wolfpack squad, (two graduates, two prematurely to the NBA draft, and now Purvis to transfer) Warren will now be the most experienced starter returning for next season (14 starts) and will be counted on heavily. With Purvis’ departure, NC State currently has only seven scholarship players currently projected to be in the program for 2013-2014, three of which have not yet set foot on a college campus. To give you a quick indication of the massive change in the Wolfpack’s composition, The Wolfpacker’s Ryan Tice tweeted the following:

Lack of playing time is often cited as the biggest reason for transfers, but seeing how Purvis was going to be looking at 35+ minutes next season this move is baffling. These things often come down to parenting or kids growing up in an entitlement society and quitting at the first sign of adversity, but I’ll leave that speculation to you all.

Based on Rodney’s newest twitter follower, UCONN coach Kevin Ollie, (screenshot attached) there is speculation that RP will end up playing for the Huskies, but I wouldn’t count out Missouri.

I always saw Purvis as a Julius Hodge type of player – someone that loved NC State and would probably be here about three years, during which he would work hard and still have a good time while doing it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at Georgia State eventually.

The following is the current configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s basketball program. It goes without saying that the potential addition of JUCO transfer Desmond Lee and at least one, if not two, 5th year graduate transfers would do wonders for Gottfried and the Wolfpack basketball program about now.

Senior Class
(1) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Junior Class
(2) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sat out 2012-2103

Desmond Lee, your presence is requested in the new ACC!

Well now that is seems to be indeed true that RP in transferring, all I can think of is the efforts the university went thru to get him in school. Now he bails. Seems he was a waste, and obviously thinks too highly of himself, or perhaps concerned the incoming class may find him more time on the bench, Guess he wasn’t willing to put the effort into securing his place in the starting line up, but would rather bad mouth the coach. I certainly had no issue with TJ replacing RP, he was certainly not playing well, As for the FT percentages being up, I certainly agree, some of these departures cost us a lot of points at FT line. So I certainly ain’t throwing in the towel yet. I will let them play, and see what comes of it. We may all get pleasantly surprised. No more Lowe head cases for sure.

    MISTA:

to “drink all day”, you have to start in the morning.
to “drink all night”, you don’t stop until sunrise.
    as Mitch Hedberg said:
” i Used To drink. i still do, but i Used To, too.”

This just in….Desmond Lee to Virginia Tech!

Starting team of Lewis, Barber, Turner, Warren and Anya – equals ‘very solid’.

Purvis’ mommy didn’t like her son not starting – so instead of teaching him to be a man and compete, she says ‘run away’ from your problems because she isn’t much of a man/father figure. Weakness ensues in the child.

    Good luck to RP.

Warren hasn’t decided yet and where are the subs? I guess Anya will be in shape by the end of the year whether he can in in shape or not.

I enjoy reading this site and have read it for years. I have been a loyal pack fan since I was a young child in 1973. I rarely post but felt compelled to post after reading this thread. I wish Purvis, Leslie, Brown, Woods and Howell the best and hope they will represent NCSU in the right way. IMHO, Purvis s making a mistake, however, it is his decision. I do not think we should bash any of the guys who have decided to leave early. Yes, we have a right to post whatever we feel we should, I think we should take the high road. Would we want future recruits to be influenced by our posts? Also, enough with bashing MG. Three years ago we would be thrilled with two seasons of 24 or more wins. Yes, we all want more, me included, but we should let the man run the program without 10,000 Monday morning quarterbacks. I know some may view my thoughts as Pollyanna-ish, and yes I played sports in high school and college but I feel that sometimes we should chill.

^There are no quarterbacks in basketball. Show how much you know, dan.

Hey – at the end of the day, MG has earned a 3rd and 4th year, barring a catastrophe.

There is always lots of drama surrounding big-time programs – and apparently, moreso at NC State.

It should be more than a little bothersome to all of us that Gottfried has recruited 4 guys with a chance to play more than one year at NC State…2 of them have left.

But at the end of the day, Gott has done what was required thus far.

    http://acc.blogs.starnewsonline.com/36161/source-purvis-surprise-transfer-based-on-desire-to-play-pointp/

“But according to a source within the program, his decision to leave was not based on projected playing time, but rather, his desire to play the point guard position.”

If true, his transfer makes a bit more sense. He would be, at best, the 3rd best PG on the team next year.

You’re assuming the one currently on the roster comes back.

  14. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 9:31 PM #

Let’s please call a spade a spade, this is all BJD’s fault.

  15. graywolf 04/01/2013 at 9:47 PM #

We are going to find out how well Goffried can coach now and how well he can recruit……he’s going to need to do both very well in the near future in order to keep his job.

Also, the type of selfish mentality we see in so many players not only at State but all around the country is due in large part to AAU basketball. High profile AAU players do not learn nor practice defense and it is killing high school and college basketball.

  16. WeAreCured 04/01/2013 at 9:52 PM #

Well, it’s disappointing, but I wish him the best and appreciate his contributions to this past season.

Some of you need to get a life, grow up, and show some maturity of your own. If any of you are sending him mean tweets, please show some class and cease.

  17. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 9:57 PM #

How does he not know 2 years from now the team he transfers to has an upcoming top pg recruit that he has to compete for playing time with? The grass is not always greener. The devil you know. etc. Plus we could have gone with a three guard line-up…

  18. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 10:03 PM #

Gott will have to earn his pay these next two seasons. It won’t be nearly as easy as it has been.

  19. BJD95 04/01/2013 at 10:07 PM #

Everything is my fault. I have three daughters and an ex-wife, I couldn’t be more certain of that! 😀

WBS is coming back, I would panic if that were not the case. And I would panic if Warren left.

With Lee, we would have 4 dudes for three guard slots. Washington is there to back up at forward. Could still have 8 playables if we get another grad transfer (a big would give us decent flexibility).

  20. MattN 04/01/2013 at 10:30 PM #

Couldn’t be more disappointed in Rodney. We (NCSU) go to bat for him against the NCAA to get him eligible and THIS is our thanks? Appreciate it Rodney. Don’t let the door knob hit ya….

RP in for a Harrowing experience?

  22. WV Wolf 04/01/2013 at 10:42 PM #

This might be a little hypocritical coming from the guy who wrote the article about fans being too hard on a player, but I’m a little tired of self-entitled players and/or their helicopter parents who don’t want to earn their playing time.

I’m not singling out Purvis, he’s just another in a long list both here at State and elsewhere. WVU had 3 guys transfer today too.

Makes you appreciate a guy like Howell even more.

  23. WeAreCured 04/01/2013 at 10:50 PM #

Big Rich appreciation! It will all work out in the end.

  24. highstick 04/01/2013 at 10:59 PM #

“I have to constantly remind myself that absolutely none of you have ever been around bigtime programs.

I do appreciate the few consistantly level headed peeps over the last couple weeks, though…Kudos.

    Red flags …Something ain’t right …gawd awmighty.

    What would you”

Well, depends on what you mean by “been around”? But danged if I know right now, but I’d agree “something ain’t right, but I’m not close enough to this one to make any type a call or comment”.

I just don’t know what to think except “what I have learned being around some of those programs” and getting input from some of those coaches involved.

It does bring into question recruiting those “highly ranked” kids..Somebody knocked Gregg Marshall’s recruiting the other day, but darned if he’s not in the finals with none of the 5 stars…

Coach Wooden really thought he had his hands full with Bill Walton…Walton was probably mild compared to some of the things going on now.

There was a lot of smoke about a freshman causing issues all season wrong. Some thought it was Lewis due to the parent’s tweet. Some thought it was Warren and went so far as to say that we should never take another legacy recruit. Maybe this points to what it actually was?

If one looks at the signs, they all kind of pointed here. Purvis started the year as a starter with conversations coming from his camp about playing point. I really didn’t see it, particularly not with Lewis in the same class. I think Lewis will be a special college point by the time he is done.

I didn’t see it as Warren. The kid seemed to work hard (at least on the court) all year. He was erratic, but he was a freshman. He played some of his best games in the back half of the season and definitely picked up the defensive and rebounding efforts.

Purvis ended up getting benched and kind of disappeared over the past few weeks. He also cherry picked quite a bit and had that last second slam dunk against UVA instead of passing it to one of the reserves.

I’m not saying Purvis is a bad kid, but there were signs. Pair that with the eligibility issues, the high school transfers, the questionable school he ended up at and the multiple commits and there were a lot of red flags.

I wish him the best wherever life takes him. I hope he thinks a long time about his next move and picks the location that will provide him, stability and exposure long term. I personally don’t think that will be UCONN. If I were him, I’d look at VCU.

As for Gott, there were a lot of red flags when we hired him. Like BJD, I was NOT a fan of that hire. I won’t rehash all of that, but transfers were one of the concerns. Pair this with the transfers last year and TDT quitting this year and it is hard not to see a common thread here. When everyone breaks up with you, after a while you should recognize that you are the problem.

The homer in me says that transfers are an epidemic in college basketball. We’ve not had a year without a transfer seemingly since after Lowe’s first season. With HWSNBN, we saw about 2 a year. Sometimes transfers turn into “what might have beens” (e.g. Wilkins or Josh Davis), but most turn into “what ever happened to” (e.g. most of our former players).

We’ll see how this whole thing unfolds. We need bodies quickly and need to start recruiting some obvious four year players that are top 150. I firmly believe that is the recipe for success at NC State — find 2 top 150s that are going to stay all four years and then pair them with a top 35 type player.

The most baffling thing to me out of this whole thing is Yow. Why the @(#)* did we put that $3.75M buy out clause in? History suggests we’ll be far more apt to pay that than anyone else. She should be smarter than that………
