Rodney Purvis to Transfer from NC State [Updated 4:10pm]

In today’s episode of ‘How NC State Turns’, freshman guard Rodney Purvis will be announcing that he is transferring from NC State.  Purvis came to State as a 5-star All-Everything, McDonald’s All-American. Albeit inconsistently, Purvis showed flashes of why he was so highly recruited during his freshman season. Rodney hit the freshman wall and eventually struggled down the stretch, creating situation where fellow freshman, TJ Warren, replaced Purvis in the starting lineup.

Now that Mark Gottfried has lost 5 players from last season’s Wolfpack squad, (two graduates, two prematurely to the NBA draft, and now Purvis to transfer) Warren will now be the most experienced starter returning for next season (14 starts) and will be counted on heavily. With Purvis’ departure, NC State currently has only seven scholarship players currently projected to be in the program for 2013-2014, three of which have not yet set foot on a college campus. To give you a quick indication of the massive change in the Wolfpack’s composition, The Wolfpacker’s Ryan Tice tweeted the following:

Lack of playing time is often cited as the biggest reason for transfers, but seeing how Purvis was going to be looking at 35+ minutes next season this move is baffling. These things often come down to parenting or kids growing up in an entitlement society and quitting at the first sign of adversity, but I’ll leave that speculation to you all.

Based on Rodney’s newest twitter follower, UCONN coach Kevin Ollie, (screenshot attached) there is speculation that RP will end up playing for the Huskies, but I wouldn’t count out Missouri.

I always saw Purvis as a Julius Hodge type of player – someone that loved NC State and would probably be here about three years, during which he would work hard and still have a good time while doing it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at Georgia State eventually.

The following is the current configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s basketball program. It goes without saying that the potential addition of JUCO transfer Desmond Lee and at least one, if not two, 5th year graduate transfers would do wonders for Gottfried and the Wolfpack basketball program about now.

Senior Class
(1) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Junior Class
(2) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sat out 2012-2103

Sophomore Class
(3) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(4) TJ Warren (F)

Freshman Class – 2013 Commits
(5) Anthony Barber (PG)
(6) Kyle Washington (4F/5C)
(7) BeeJay Anya (4F/5C)
(8) Departure of Scott Wood
(9) Departure of Richard Howell
(10) Departure of Lorenzo Brown
(11) Departure of CJ Leslie
(12) Departure of Rodney Purvis

2014 Commits
(13) Caleb Martin (wing) (Open scholarship)
(1) Cody Martin (wing) (scheduled departure of Vandenberg)

Wow… Hard to believe we lost our entire starting 5, pre-modified to TJW starting at the end of the season. But OTOH we basically assumed we would lose 4 of 5 all season.

This shows what a fragile program we were at the coaching transition. As mentioned, the other transfers have not really hurt us long-term; mainly just in a potentially improved 2012-13 if Painter had stayed.

DY said as much herself at the original presser, and the NCAAT clause during the first two seasons was seen as a bonus. Even without the over-achievement of last year (e.g. if we did not make the NCAAT), this year would have met her requirement even with the 1st round exit.

I guess one way to look at it is that MG has absolutely done enough to earn the extension now in place and has shown he can produce ‘upside’. Now comes the hard part… But you’ve got to think he can demonstrate a lot of potential for this program to recruits.

“You don’t know why it’s relevant to have some background information on a person’s decision before deeming it immature and idiotic?”

That’s why I presented a list of background information. Feel free to continue smoking his pole. I’m more interested in the name on the front of the jersey.

We will never really know for sure about all the problems this year unless somebody leaving “tells all”. However, with Scott Woods recent tweet about being in good hands with the remaining three expected starters for next year, then it makes me think that the problems are at least now gone, whoever they were. No need to panic about next season as there is talent coming in. They will just need time to gel (hopefully) as a team and get their game experience at the college level.

I have to constantly remind myself that absolutely none of you have ever been around bigtime programs.

I do appreciate the few consistantly level headed peeps over the last couple weeks, though…Kudos.

    Red flags …Something ain’t right …gawd awmighty.

    What would you

“Did somebody get teabagged or something?”

    ROFL

I’ll stay away from that one. Only other comment I have is that Rodney must make decisions for Rodney. Hopefully that’s what this is. If not, then I agree with JackWolf that he might be filling in for young Mr. Harrow at GaState eventually.

Oh and twitter is not your friend people, especially if you feel the need to give advice/life lessons/pearls of wisdom to folks who you don’t know and have no clue what their life situations are. Wow.

“That’s why I presented a list of background information.”

Yeah that was some solid reasoning. And I’m a pole smoker now? It seems like you have a habit of jumping to some wild conclusions.

A player wants to take his time in getting to the NBA to find a better program fit, even if he has to sit out a year = He’s an immature idiot!

    A guy on a message board doesn’t agree with my rash conclusions = He’s a gay, pole-smoker!

Bash a player, who has been positive and respectful, for transferring. And then question anyone’s sexuality who disagrees. Where do people get those NC State fan stereotypes? It’s like they pull them out of thin air.

We play Mizzou next year? Where is that posted, I missed it?

They are all a bucn of prima donnas is all I have to say. CJ and RP had a life of entitlement. When they faced adversity and things don’t go their way they fold. Well good luck to them and don’t let the door hit you in the ass. Good riddance. As for CJL he was the cancer of the team. I am so glad he is gone. He never had any fundamentals of the game and did not play any defense. I call his style of play “Helter Skelter” or playground ball. Any body else that wants to jump ship then go. We don’t want you. Those that are willing to work hard and buy into the system of Team ball can play for Gott. Gott has won at Murray State and at Alabama. If you don’t have the right attitude then goodbye. P.S. Good luck to Brown I thought he handled himself well through it all.

“I have to constantly remind myself that absolutely none of you have ever been around bigtime programs.”

Hey now, need I remind you of the RC Cola Bowl back in the 90’s and that 2000 JUCO national championship!?!?! 🙂

Our free throw shooting percentage just increased by 15, and our turnovers decreased by 5.

    I’ll live.

Not liking the stuff I’m hearing about certain folks serial proclivities.

Note to ‘foose…good in my book.

I just want some people that constantly kick the rock over with uninitiated shit kickers, to quit embarrassing some of us.

That’s purely for selfish reasons, as I enjoy telling the outside world that “Hey man, you got State peeps all wrong. ”

    I guess I’m the chump.

I’m currently at a loss for anything intelligent to say, but I feel that this accurately sums up my feeling.

Great idea. All these transfers of College Basketball is revealing the sport is decaying under itself.

Let any one transfer without penalty of sitting. Heck, transfer two, three times….whatever.

One caveat. You get to accept a financial sports scholarship once-from the school you signed your LOI with.

After that its up to the players AAU middle men, oh, I mean Mom, uh….parents(?).

  16. shelbypackfan 04/01/2013 at 6:44 PM #

I’m pretty sure this has been said….but I am going to put my two cents in…even though…probably already in here. It appears to me that after Purvis got benched for Lewis at the point when Zo went down…Purvis looked at his future and saw it wasn’t with State. Obviously he can’t play the 3, 4, or 5 positions…so point and shooting guard is it. And well…we KNOW he can’t play the shooting guard…so point is it. He’s not as good a Tyler…and I will reach and say he won’t be as good as Cat. So…time for him to move on if he wants to develop at the point.

And call me a half full kinda guy….but…maybe the transfers are a reflection (outside of Painter) of the program raising the floor on the talent at NC State. Scott Wood was a 3 star coming out of high school and started 4 years at State. Does anyone see a 3 star doing that now?

MG just needs to get a Masters senior to transfer in at the 4/5, and and Lee at the 2/3 and we will be fine. And possibly we take a chance on the Djitte kid from Fayettville.

  17. john of sparta 04/01/2013 at 6:48 PM #

maybe we’re not the only one of the 2013 NCAAT
teams that will have this particular problem.
give it another week to see if we’re
    the sore thumb.

  18. pakfanistan 04/01/2013 at 6:48 PM #

“Does anyone see a 3 star doing that now?”

Well, we have four scholarship players at the moment, so in theory, a walk on could do it.

  19. NCStatefan 04/01/2013 at 6:48 PM #

As long as TJ Warren comes back, with the 3 amazing players we have coming in (Anthony, Beejay and Kyle) and the other players filling in for the 5th spot, we should be in very good hands next year and surprise some people. If Tyler stays, I think he will be a solid player for us also.

  20. NCStatefan 04/01/2013 at 7:00 PM #

I like both the Sidy Djitte and Lennard Freeman. Either one of those guys would be a good tandem with Beejay. Hopefully Vandy will really work hard and deserve some productive minutes if we don’t get another quality big guy. Both Sidy and Lennar are oozing with potential.

  21. NCStatefan 04/01/2013 at 7:05 PM #

The JUCO SG Desmond Lee is the real deal. I really believe he would more than make up for RP absence.

  22. wolfpack4ever 04/01/2013 at 7:15 PM #

MG seems to have passed on 2 three star guys that would walk across hot coals for the opportunity to play up to 4 years in Raleigh. Count me in the group that does not understand the apparent all or nothing approach with the five star guys. Every team needs bench players, role players, glue guys, or whatever you might choose to call them.

  23. ringo 04/01/2013 at 7:39 PM #

I hope we can pick up some more 4 year glue guys. Those empty schollies are not helping.

  24. Pack1998 04/01/2013 at 7:51 PM #

This program needs bigs – not guards.

No hard feelings to Rodney – best of luck to him where ever he ends up.

Felt like he had heart and intensity – rather he stay than go. F’er couldn’t make a free throw. Needs to work on his shot. Was hoping to see it evolve at State.
