Rodney Purvis to Transfer from NC State [Updated 4:10pm]

In today’s episode of ‘How NC State Turns’, freshman guard Rodney Purvis will be announcing that he is transferring from NC State.  Purvis came to State as a 5-star All-Everything, McDonald’s All-American. Albeit inconsistently, Purvis showed flashes of why he was so highly recruited during his freshman season. Rodney hit the freshman wall and eventually struggled down the stretch, creating situation where fellow freshman, TJ Warren, replaced Purvis in the starting lineup.

Now that Mark Gottfried has lost 5 players from last season’s Wolfpack squad, (two graduates, two prematurely to the NBA draft, and now Purvis to transfer) Warren will now be the most experienced starter returning for next season (14 starts) and will be counted on heavily. With Purvis’ departure, NC State currently has only seven scholarship players currently projected to be in the program for 2013-2014, three of which have not yet set foot on a college campus. To give you a quick indication of the massive change in the Wolfpack’s composition, The Wolfpacker’s Ryan Tice tweeted the following:

Lack of playing time is often cited as the biggest reason for transfers, but seeing how Purvis was going to be looking at 35+ minutes next season this move is baffling. These things often come down to parenting or kids growing up in an entitlement society and quitting at the first sign of adversity, but I’ll leave that speculation to you all.

Based on Rodney’s newest twitter follower, UCONN coach Kevin Ollie, (screenshot attached) there is speculation that RP will end up playing for the Huskies, but I wouldn’t count out Missouri.

I always saw Purvis as a Julius Hodge type of player – someone that loved NC State and would probably be here about three years, during which he would work hard and still have a good time while doing it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at Georgia State eventually.

The following is the current configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s basketball program. It goes without saying that the potential addition of JUCO transfer Desmond Lee and at least one, if not two, 5th year graduate transfers would do wonders for Gottfried and the Wolfpack basketball program about now.

Senior Class
(1) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Junior Class
(2) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sat out 2012-2103

Sophomore Class
(3) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(4) TJ Warren (F)

Freshman Class – 2013 Commits
(5) Anthony Barber (PG)
(6) Kyle Washington (4F/5C)
(7) BeeJay Anya (4F/5C)
(8) Departure of Scott Wood
(9) Departure of Richard Howell
(10) Departure of Lorenzo Brown
(11) Departure of CJ Leslie
(12) Departure of Rodney Purvis

2014 Commits
(13) Caleb Martin (wing) (Open scholarship)
(1) Cody Martin (wing) (scheduled departure of Vandenberg)

Purvis as a nba point guard? Don’t see it. Too much work to do, too many better. More coming up every year.

He had his chance at PG this year. He failed miserably.

    He’s got a WR mentality, not a QB’s.

I think it’s a bad move, all the way around. But that is just my opinion. He’s gotta make his own decisions for his own reasons. Whether I (or we) agree should have absolutely zero influence on his decisions.

But who knows. If he uses the year to develop a jump shot and a free throw stoke… maybe? I’d also suggest getting rid of that Tim Tebow 3 point wind up too.

    Regardless, I wish him well.

Tau I checked and you are right – it is 6. I was counting Mays but he transferred twice, thus the extra year. Still, we have more turnover than the cast of the walking dead.

Oh well, let’s see what our remaining guys can do and what Gott has in store for us next.

    “He’s got a WR mentality, not a QB’s.”

There’s a place for that. Nate Robinson is one of the most exciting bench players I can remember ever seeing. Purvis reminds me of him.

I’m a Bulls fan though. So take it for what it’s worth.

+1 Codebrown – Unless Purvis is an all-american when he returns which none of us anticipate. There are several plausible reasons that he “could” (not that he did) “think” (not that he knows) there could be a better situation for him.

People change jobs, significant others, swap cars, houses for perceived greener grass all the time. When it seems to hurt us it sucks, I get that.

Focusing on the positives though – next year doesn’t look good. With the inexperience (after Zo and Leslie leaving) I don’t think anyone was thinking pre-season top 25. Now we are a young bubble team at best. We have alot to offer top talent that can commit to the team philosophy that Gott is instilling. Departures to the NBA are GREAT GREAT GREAT for our program. When you have no departures to the NBA that is a problem.

Lets continue to recruit, get some glue guys and continue to build what we all hope will be a consistent top 15-20 program that breaks through to the final 4 and national championship every now and again.

caveat – I’m a optimistic guy by nature lol

I think there was too much under the bridge, and moving on HAD to happen, both for RP and MG.

Judge MG based on how he fixes things going forward, starting with the 2013-14 team. Desmond Lee is necessary, I feel good as long as the process doesn’t drag out.

Nobody is arguing that MG isn’t responsible for his program. I will withhold full judgment until I see how we adapt, and how we play next year. If it’s a dumpster fire, then maybe we know by March 2014. If not, then we will know whether we have a sustainable program by March 2015.

Sound fair? I think so. I’m certainly not saying I’m unconcerned. That would be silly. But not in full panic mode either.

Remember, this is coming from somebody who initially HATED this hire. If I can step away from the ledge for a bit…shouldn’t you be able to? YMMV

What a complete pile of crap to digest in one day. I was apparantely waaaaayy off when I thought he was one of the few with a positive attitude on the court. Good Lord football (I have no expectations) please get her quick. At least the games are followed by hours listening to music drinking completely oblivious to the poo thats about to happen.

  7. Tau837 04/01/2013 at 4:46 PM #

Also, with regard to transfers, don’t forget Gott brought in transfers Alex Johnson and Ralston Turner. And hopefully Desmond Lee very soon.

If we get Lee, it’s possible that the ledger is close to balanced.

  8. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 4:47 PM #

Still, what is the source of this “news” ?

  9. GApack04 04/01/2013 at 4:48 PM #

Something to keep in mind RP is very tight with Siva from U of L and seeing one of his friends play for a more accomplished coach and win games might have been enough to push him out of Raleigh. Is transferring to U of L out of the question with them coming to the ACC?

  10. BJD95 04/01/2013 at 4:50 PM #

That’s the nice thing about being a blog, and not old media. We don’t need to name sources. We are measured in what we say, we know our credibility and track record are our currency.

  11. TLeo 04/01/2013 at 4:53 PM #

no way he will be allowed to tranfer to a incoming acc school.

  12. GApack04 04/01/2013 at 4:54 PM #

    PackPride says on twitter:

…he can’t go to any ACC schools or ND, L’ville, Pitt, Cuse, Mizzou, or Cincy.

I guess the assumption is UCONN? If he ends up at UK I will lol

  13. BJD95 04/01/2013 at 4:56 PM #

I would bet Cal is “once bitten, twice shy” with Wolfpack refugees. I would bet on UConn, or someplace totally random.

Maybe he will go play for the Credit Union! 😀

  14. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 5:00 PM #

BJD95 well we all know Purvis is money in the bank.

  15. JEOH2 04/01/2013 at 5:00 PM #

He can’t transfer to any current or future ACC school…also cannot transfer to Cincy & interestingly enough Mizzou as they are on the schedule next year…listen for RP its UCONN or bust…

I agree with those who have pointed out the importance of Desmond Lee…without him…I push the panic button

Edit: as I posted this others posted the same…wasn’t quick enough smh

  16. 13OT 04/01/2013 at 5:01 PM #

Hey Rodney, why don’t you go to Arizona State?

  17. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 5:01 PM #

I don’t know how someone can expect to be the central point of the offense when you have who we had returning. He still got a ton of minute until he started struggling. Will we eventually get some explanation?

  18. Pack Mentality 04/01/2013 at 5:02 PM #

“You are analyzing his decision armed with how much information exactly?”

I don’t know what the relevance is. But I do know how many minutes he played this year, I know what his role on the team was, I know the high level of pay NBA players make out of college, and I know how much playing time most transfers get that don’t use a sick family member as an excuse. I know the liklihood of going to the NBA after next year is better when you don’t sit the year out. I don’t however know if he was forced to transfer by Gott.

  19. redcanine 04/01/2013 at 5:04 PM #

Didn’t he commit to L’Ville, then drop ’em? Soft committed to UCONN, but changed his mind. Then, came to State for a year, then gone.

    T-R-O-U-B-L-E!

    Enjoy it, Ollie.

  20. Hawkeye Whitney 04/01/2013 at 5:09 PM #

After having some time to digest this news…it is still just as bad.

  21. RedandWhite97 04/01/2013 at 5:12 PM #

I’m with some of the others here in that I’m willing to give Gottfried some time to see how he responds and not ready to panic. However, I’m still concerned someone else leaves. Any news on TJ or TL?

  22. MARinRVA 04/01/2013 at 5:14 PM #

I partially agree with TLeo upstream. Maybe CJL was the effect, not the cause, of a poisonous locker room environment. I really don’t know. Unless we have bona fide inside info like BJD obviously does, the only thing the rest of us knuckledraggers know is Woo’s comment midseason. I’ve read that CJL is a head case, that Zo & TJW hate each other, and now I’m reading that RP’s worst enemy is either himself or his mother. What’s the truth?

Part of me would like to know what’s really going on in the program, but part of me wonders why I want inside scoop on someone else’s drama when there’s enough in my real life to keep track of. But lacking any real info, who am I or anyone to say that RP has an entitlement mentality? Like somebody else said, people change jobs all the time. It’s a blow to the program, but people really ought not project their issues with society onto what one 19 year kid does unless they have the data to back it up.

At any rate, we’re about to find out how good a coach MG is. I feel cautiously optimistic.

  23. WolfTrack 04/01/2013 at 5:14 PM #

Strange how little character bashing there was when we picked up Ralston Turner from LSU.

He was the SEC freshman of the year! The clear leader on his hometown team! How could he just pack up and leave for Raleigh? What an immature, selfish move.

  24. Thinkpack17 04/01/2013 at 5:17 PM #

“I don’t know what the relevance is.”

You don’t know why it’s relevant to have some background information on a person’s decision before deeming it immature and idiotic?

There have to be a couple of adjectives to describe that. Give me a minute…

  25. pakfanistan 04/01/2013 at 5:17 PM #

“I think there was too much under the bridge, and moving on HAD to happen, both for RP and MG.”

What is this in reference to?

Did somebody get teabagged or something?
