Rodney Purvis to Transfer from NC State [Updated 4:10pm]

In today’s episode of ‘How NC State Turns’, freshman guard Rodney Purvis will be announcing that he is transferring from NC State.  Purvis came to State as a 5-star All-Everything, McDonald’s All-American. Albeit inconsistently, Purvis showed flashes of why he was so highly recruited during his freshman season. Rodney hit the freshman wall and eventually struggled down the stretch, creating situation where fellow freshman, TJ Warren, replaced Purvis in the starting lineup.

Now that Mark Gottfried has lost 5 players from last season’s Wolfpack squad, (two graduates, two prematurely to the NBA draft, and now Purvis to transfer) Warren will now be the most experienced starter returning for next season (14 starts) and will be counted on heavily. With Purvis’ departure, NC State currently has only seven scholarship players currently projected to be in the program for 2013-2014, three of which have not yet set foot on a college campus. To give you a quick indication of the massive change in the Wolfpack’s composition, The Wolfpacker’s Ryan Tice tweeted the following:

Lack of playing time is often cited as the biggest reason for transfers, but seeing how Purvis was going to be looking at 35+ minutes next season this move is baffling. These things often come down to parenting or kids growing up in an entitlement society and quitting at the first sign of adversity, but I’ll leave that speculation to you all.

Based on Rodney’s newest twitter follower, UCONN coach Kevin Ollie, (screenshot attached) there is speculation that RP will end up playing for the Huskies, but I wouldn’t count out Missouri.

I always saw Purvis as a Julius Hodge type of player – someone that loved NC State and would probably be here about three years, during which he would work hard and still have a good time while doing it.  I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him end up at Georgia State eventually.

The following is the current configuration and scholarship spacing of NC State’s basketball program. It goes without saying that the potential addition of JUCO transfer Desmond Lee and at least one, if not two, 5th year graduate transfers would do wonders for Gottfried and the Wolfpack basketball program about now.

Senior Class
(1) Jordan Vandenberg (C) (Redshirt)

Junior Class
(2) Ralston Turner (Wing) – transfer from LSU sat out 2012-2103

Sophomore Class
(3) Tyler Lewis (PG)
(4) TJ Warren (F)

Freshman Class – 2013 Commits
(5) Anthony Barber (PG)
(6) Kyle Washington (4F/5C)
(7) BeeJay Anya (4F/5C)
(8) Departure of Scott Wood
(9) Departure of Richard Howell
(10) Departure of Lorenzo Brown
(11) Departure of CJ Leslie
(12) Departure of Rodney Purvis

2014 Commits
(13) Caleb Martin (wing) (Open scholarship)

Like I tweeted to RP you’re over 18 act like a man and work to fix problems in commitments rather than throw them away when things don’t work out the way you thought they would.

This is baffling and disappointing. The kid showed flashes of brilliance, but then even more flashes of not knowing how to blend in as a team player. For next year, this is obviously a pretty God-awful turn of events. Long-term? Meh – let’s build a program full of guys who “get it”. I wish Rodney was one of those guys – apparently not.

    I just can’t understand this.

  4. ZZ 04/01/2013 at 3:08 PM #

Do we know why? Problems with Gott? Even with problems, how is sitting out a year better?

  5. Wulfpack 04/01/2013 at 3:11 PM #

You can only assume there were problems. PT would not be an issue next year. Just hope Warren stays.

  6. WTNY 04/01/2013 at 3:11 PM #

Something doesn’t compute. I can’t help but see red flags here.

  7. Rick 04/01/2013 at 3:13 PM #

    Something is not right.
We now lost all 5 starters from this years team.

BTW I will anxiously await gopack10’s apology to BJD.

Maybe there is a reason Sidney Lowe didn’t recruit him….

Maybe he’s just not that good of a basketball player….

Outside of a few Sports Center type dunks, Purvis was terrible. Lost his starting job to Warren, deservedly so. Way too many hot dog plays and he don’t do defense. He undersized for shooting guard, he made it clear he knows with his size his only path to the NBA is point guard and with Barber and Lewis that not happening here. The fact that he willing to sit a year shows his own lack of confidence in his game. he was destined to be a third string point guard here. Good bye, don’t let the door hit you!

From a very realiable source, Rodney’s mom did not like Gottfried and did not think Rodney was getting used in the correct way. Kids listen to their parents.

  11. ZZ 04/01/2013 at 3:16 PM #

    ^That makes sense Hungwolf.
Rumor is that he was bad mouthing Gott to prospects too.

On an up note… Cat Barber’s handle is legendary.

  12. Mike 04/01/2013 at 3:18 PM #

I wonder why RP’s mom did not like Gott. Maybe she thought (like all parents) that her boy should have been the #1 go-to guy?

Purvis’ flashes of good play were few and far between during the ACC & tournament schedule. He looked completely lost or disinterested by the end, look at his stats from the last 4 games. I especially like his 2 point, 3 turnover game against Temple.

But the fact is we need warm bodies for next year. If get Desmond Lee, then Purvis leaving is manageable. Unless he has a complete metamorphosis, Purvis won’t live up to his 5 star hype. Kind of like a guy who just transferred to Georgia St.

Right NOW is when we will see what The Gottfather is made of.

“BTW I will anxiously await gopack10′s apology to BJD.”

Apology? No, there’s no need for an apology since I didn’t do anything wrong. Questioning someone on something that they aren’t 100% sure on is actually quite normal.

What I will do is give BJD his due for being correct on this one.

Teenage Player: Hey guys, I’m transferring…no hard feelings. Thanks for the opportunity.

Adult Fans: You have entitlement issues, you’re soft, you were a cancer in the looker room, we’re better off without you and you sucked anyways.

    Comedy.

“Like I tweeted to RP you’re over 18 act like a man and work to fix problems in commitments rather than throw them away when things don’t work out the way you thought they would.”

    Where do you get off?

  18. ILPackfan 04/01/2013 at 3:30 PM #

If Purvis was bad-mouthing the coach or program, especially to recruits, then good riddance. Hope it’s not true, but if it is, he can take that crap someplace else.

  19. JeremyH 04/01/2013 at 3:37 PM #

This is an April Fool’s joke…..right?

  20. Hawkeye Whitney 04/01/2013 at 3:40 PM #

Kudos to SFN and BJD for being on top of this development. Thanks to you, when my UNC friends razz me about this, I can now blow it off and say, “Aw, old news, I knew about that last week.”

Maybe RP can use the year off to work on his perimeter shooting………and his free throws………and his defense

Now if Warren stays, he could have an Erick Green type of year, but on the flip side the Pack will have a VaTech type of year.

  21. Daniel_Simpson_Day 04/01/2013 at 3:42 PM #

All I can do is picture BJD sitting somewhere with his hands over his head screaming “remain calm…all is well”; optimism just doesn’t suit you. You might as well slide back down in the gutter with us doomsayers.

  22. MrPlywood 04/01/2013 at 3:42 PM #

I don’t know which comment to go with here. It’s a tossup between

    “Rodney, we hardly knew ya…”

    or

“Youth is wasted on the young.”

  23. nav 04/01/2013 at 3:45 PM #

Now we know why Julius Randell dropped State from his list.

  24. Pack85EE 04/01/2013 at 3:47 PM #

Maybe the point guard issue is the main thing. He felt he could be the man, and there were some hints of the issue when Brown went down. Purvis got one short shot and then Lewis took over. With Cat and Lewis next year, no room for time at point for Purvis. But if he is bad mouthing the coach, that would speak volumes for who he is. Big if, I’ll give him benefit of the doubt for now.

  25. partialqualifier 04/01/2013 at 3:47 PM #

I don’t want to be in the business of bad-mouthing an 18 year old kid, that is bush-league. Bottom line is this is a kid who LOVED NC State, was a local kid, and as far as I could tell, played his ass off when he was in the game. I have no idea what he did in practice, and I have no idea what he did off the court. He was a little out of control sometimes, but no one can intelligently question his intensity and passion when he was on the court.

This kid wants to play in the NBA, loved State, and was local….and now he is willing to sit out an entire season, meaning it will now be at LEAST two more years before he can go pro…just to get away from our program…after we have made 2 straight NCAA’s.

Folks, if this doesnt send up a GIANT RED FLAG, I have no idea what will. Mark it down…this is the beginning of the end for coach Gott at NCSU
