Purvis Banned From Transferring to Cincinnati and Missouri (Among Others)

In something that’s become standard practice across the landscape of college basketball, when Rodney Purvis was given his release by the Wolfpack to transfer, he was also given a list of schools he couldn’t transfer to:  Missouri, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Louisville.

Why Cincinnati and Missouri?  State plans to schedule the schools in the near future — in fact, Cincinnati just announced that State will be visiting the Bearcats home floor next season.  Interesting to say the least, especially since just last year Demontre Harris was banned from transferring from South Carolina to NC State.

All of this is moot, given that it seems that UConn is probably Purvis’s next destination.  But is it fair?

I don’t think Purvis got such a bad deal. Coach Gott and Debbie Yow didn’t have to release Purvis from his scholarship. Not only did they allow a release, but they are allowing a transfer to any of these Division I schools (plenty to choose from):

Personally, I think kids playing for free (or on scholarship) should have the same luxury a coach getting paid millions has. Coach Gott could leave tomorrow and coach next year anywhere he wanted (so long as they wanted to pay the buyout). A player should have the same right. If Purvis is so good that you dont want him playing against you in the future, then why the hell couldnt you use him better for our team?

why don’t you post his statistics, then tell us what your bar for “better” is instead of same old crap platitudes?

Usually it is a given that a player can not transfer within the conference and a lot of coaches bar players from teams they will play while said player is eligible. Also teams that are believed to have tampered with or illegally contacted said player will be banned. Tim Fuller is the asst at Mizzu and he was asst at Louisville when Purvis committed there. So since Mizzu is a banned team I would assume our staff feels someone tampered. Does not matter because Purvis is going to UConn and they probably tampered but I believe no one really cares.

As someone commented, I think – HERE, previously. RP needs some maturity. I wish him well.

I am reminded of the fine character and maturity of CJ Williams. I talked to CJ a couple of times at the pressers. His dad is a LARGE influence in his life.

It is a real shame that RP does not have a Shanda Purvis tatoo….as here will be countless OTHER hangeroners if he does make the NBA….

Once an athlete decides to transfer from State to the detriment of the team, I cannot comprehend why anybody gives a f*** about if he’s happy with our demands on where he cannot transfer to.

Kids, because they are right, like 8 year olds, need College Basketball to be more like HS BBall. Change schools 3 or 4 times. No consequences, let them just be kids, and besides, they are getting a great variety of teachers and school systems so they must be getting real bright in the process.

It’s so mean to push them out of this mindset in a University setting. I mean, it’s just College. 4 years until you graduate, PE classes, they call them Freshman, Sophomore, ect.

The NCAA should do everything in their power to make sure that the first time the reality of life sets in is either playing Professional Basketball, or whatever strange alternative there is out there (middle man agent running?)

Bottom line is College Basketball players need it to be just the same as High School as long as possible. That’s what we want and expect for anyone who had kids in school. Just hug ’em and tell them it’s all going to be okay. Every wants what’s best for you now-and that’s arrested development.

The rule is fair. Can you imagine with all the recruiting violations now you have to keep an eye on your own scholarship kids. I think the kids should have to stay at least 3 years. The schools will benefit. However an athletic scholarship should be as good if not better than any academic scholarship. Do the US Academy athletes get to keep their monthly stipend? Sure do! Maybe one way to handle it is if the athlete pays back the tuition and board for the time served then they can transfer and play immediately. However, I hate it for State. Here we go into next year with such uncertainty. No senior leadership, 2 junior transfers, 2 sophs and 3 frosh. This is now 3 players who could contribute that have quit on us. I don’t dig it.
