Purvis Banned From Transferring to Cincinnati and Missouri (Among Others)

In something that’s become standard practice across the landscape of college basketball, when Rodney Purvis was given his release by the Wolfpack to transfer, he was also given a list of schools he couldn’t transfer to:  Missouri, Cincinnati, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Louisville.

Why Cincinnati and Missouri?  State plans to schedule the schools in the near future — in fact, Cincinnati just announced that State will be visiting the Bearcats home floor next season.  Interesting to say the least, especially since just last year Demontre Harris was banned from transferring from South Carolina to NC State.

All of this is moot, given that it seems that UConn is probably Purvis’s next destination.  But is it fair?

As someone who is writing tuition checks, I wish my kid was being taken advantage of like these poor, mistreated athletes.

I’m all for dropping the scholarships completely. This whole system is a complete farce. The Ivy League is the only league doing this correctly.

If kids are coming to college to major in playing sports, then they should just go to the minors. Athletics are extracurricular and aren’t important when compared to the educational mission. The athletes should be required to meet the same admissions standards, be required to progress towards degrees and should have the same criteria for academic and need based aid.

Yes, illegal payments would still happen. I think it is inevitable so long as there is someone who thinks that is a good return on their investment. Boosters with money to burn and coaches with personal gain aren’t going to be dissuaded one way or another.

Do this and let kids transfer at will. If they can get into the school and pay their own way (or qualifiy for academic or need based aid), they should be able to move as they want.

ringo said: “You are wrong to think there are no reasons for this. We are trying to spell it out for you.”

but ringo said in the same post: ” The risk minimizes with different opponents and time or whatever reason.”

How can you spell out the reasons if you don’t know what they are (i.e., “whatever reason”)? That’s one of the points of the discussion, to discuss what the reasons are.

It was implied upthread that Missouri tampered, which would be the reason for them being on the list, and I support that rationale if true.

Why would the reason for blocking Cincinnati be that we will play them, but we wouldn’t use the same reasoning against other future opponents?

ringo said the margin for winning is razor thin and used that to justify blocking future opponents. If that is the reasoning, then it should apply to all future opponents. For example, why not block the entire B1G, given that we don’t know who our B1G Challenge opponents will be for the next four years? Those will all be key non-conference games.

ringo said: “Why can’t you get it?”

I’m trying to have logical, rational, and civil discussion about the topic. What I don’t get is why some in this thread feel the need to be a jerk about it.

I wish RP good luck. I hope he is successful in all of his life endeavors. When you make a commitment I fill like you do everything in your power to fulfill that commitment. We all know that players leave for the NBA. For RP to forgo his next year of playing b-ball is pretty intense. Did he hate Gott? Did Gott make him mad? Was it Gott’s fault? I don’t know. No one really knows the true story. If RP left over playing time at the point then he is a big baby. Man up!!

  5. ringo 04/04/2013 at 4:48 PM #

I’m not an insider, only speculating just the same as yall. The logical reasons are all listed in the thread. Some possibly punitive for the school (not Purvis), some to mitigate risk (acc & future opponents), some not blocked for inverse of reasons just listed. If you want more, email DY then report to us what you find.

I don’t think anyone is being a jerk about anything, just man talk. No biggie. Apologies if I offended. I do chuckle at the mollycoddlers tho, can’t lie. 😉

    … I probably had 400 – 500 different employees over 20 years in business for myself…

FWIW…. I always figured that if that guy couldn’t work for me…. then the next best place for him was to work with my biggest competitors….

I’m sure that I passed them more than a few ‘headaches’ and I don’t recall ever hearing of one that caused me more problems at the next place than he did while he was working for me…..

Gave most all of them ‘glowing’ recommendations…. when asked.

Can you guys imagine….. Harrow and others of his ilk playing for Uncle Roy or Coach Rat instead of lost at UK or worse ???

I think that would be fun to watch !

  7. Blackfish 04/04/2013 at 5:25 PM #

Purvis, I watched David Thompson play, I watched Rodney Monroe play, I watch Thurl Bailey play, I watched Vinnie Delnegro play, I watched Guglioti play,

And I watched you play, and to you son I say “BYE”

Id rather have Ernie Myers back, similar styles!!!

Basically, my take is that the NCAA and its new $12 billion headquarters could burn, with its odd looking leader and his crooked minions in it, and the world would be none the worse without it or its dumb rules.

“Banned” is very strong word. Purvis is restricted as to which program he can choose for transfer. If we were as vindictive as that crazy Frank guy at South Carolina, we would restrict Purvis from joining UConn. In fact, why aren’t we? Are sending the message that our players can be massaged and then plucked during the course of a season? Maybe Frank was right..

  10. poorfarmer 04/04/2013 at 6:41 PM #

I won’t even pretend to know the reason or what really happened that caused him to transfer, i just feel that Gott will find someone better for our program with that scholarship. Seems to me that he wanted to make to many sportscenter highlights than actually playing team ball. Hope he finds a place suited for his style of game and we find somebody to compliment ours.

Wasn’t it 30 years ago this very night that we watched the Wolfpack bring down Phi Slamma Jamma?

  12. Pack Mentality 04/04/2013 at 7:05 PM #

I think we should go completely bleeding heart for every athlete that doesn’t want to play for State. A free ride and going to bat for somebody who barely became eligible…we still need to do more to make sure his mom is happy with the next program that he uses.

  13. eas 04/04/2013 at 8:04 PM #

I wish RP luck and have no hard feelings other than he enjoyed a free ride with us a year. He is a kid and he is allowed to live and learn (for better or worse).

Still, I just can’t figure out someone who was this athletic and set to be a starter would leave. Not just leave but be willing to sit out a year to do so. Sounds like he was very unhappy with Raleigh and/or the coaching staff.

  14. redcanine 04/04/2013 at 8:09 PM #

Rodney, go play for Moten at Central. You could play any position you want, weather you suck at it or not.

Just promise me that you’ll save the crocodile tears on your way out.

  15. Wulfpack 04/04/2013 at 8:23 PM #

There are always two sides. You don’t know what was pitched to the kid. Not taking up for him, but we don’t know jack. And quite frankly, from what I am hearing about the way Gott is running this thing, there will be others to say see ya later, too. When enough guys leave you have to begin to wonder, and we are about there.

If your kid played for that Rutgers maniac, wouldn’t you want him to be able to move on somewhere else after the coach showed his behind?

  16. redcanine 04/04/2013 at 8:36 PM #

“If your kid played for that Rutgers maniac, wouldn’t you want him to be able to move on somewhere else after the coach showed his behind?”

    ^Yeppers.

I’d tell him to go play for his godfather who has his best interest at heart. In Rodney’s case, that’d be UNC Central’s Lavelle Moten. Mom would still be within earshot.

  17. ringo 04/04/2013 at 8:58 PM #

Ok WULF, enough with the innuendo. How is Gott, “running this thing”?

You just admitted you “don’t know jack” sentence right before. Ain’t that some ish?

  18. john of sparta 04/04/2013 at 9:21 PM #

    Gott gotta ‘splanin’ 2 do.
    my son’s text-talk take.

  19. shelbyrileigh 04/04/2013 at 9:45 PM #

yall should worry more about why he’s gonna sit out a year, knowing he’ll be a starter next year for us. hope theres not internal problems in our program.

  20. slamma 04/05/2013 at 12:21 AM #

I wish the young man nothing but the best so I cannot imagine prohibiting him from transferring to Cincinnati or Missouri would hinder his progress. This guy could go about anywhere he wants to, why would he be disappointed if he can’t go to either if these places? If he really likes chili with spaghetti he can go to Xavier, if BBQ is his thing, there are a ton of places to get better Q than Columbia, MO.

Good luck Rodney. Sorry to see you go. You were my son’s favorite player.

  21. vtpackfan 04/05/2013 at 8:20 AM #

Ha-Ha!!! Wulf with the best pot calling the tea kettle black. Are the two sides of the picture you’ve painted of Coach Gottfried on this site somewhere?

No. But, alas, it must be this way. Someone needs to stick up for the women hurt by this monster, basketball players careers he’s destroyed, and, I assume, the cardboard box of puppies he left by the road somewhere.

  22. IT_Wolf 04/05/2013 at 9:38 AM #

I don’t agree with the restrictions. Its always the players that deal with all the problems and not the schools or the coaches. When Painter transferred out, he was given an unlimited waiver which was nice touch.

Here is how I think the problem should be dealt with…

If a student goes to a school on an Athletic scholarship, they can transfer to any university that they meet the admissions requirements for and are immediately eligible to play. However, the student cannot be put on any scholarship except academic scholarships for 1 year.

Walkons should be able to do whatever the hell they want. Its already on their dime.

  23. SuperStuff 04/05/2013 at 9:48 AM #

I thought Rodney was a team first kind of guy. Damn this is rough. It takes time to learn this offense and execute it correctly. I’m just glad Gott is recruiting as well as he is and finds a replacement for Rodney quickly.

  24. WolfTrack 04/05/2013 at 10:14 AM #

cent one: Rodney knew exactly what conditions would be placed on his transfer before he made his final decision. I guarantee it. He saw a scenario he preferred over staying here and took it.

cent two: as a former walk on athlete, in a non revenue sport, I promise you athletes have it just fine. The resources available are so far beyond what the average student gets it’s ridiculous. Even if you aren’t on scholarship.
