Pack tops ECU in Greenville last night, 6-1.

Ryan Wilkins gets the start, throwing 5 innings of no hit ball (0 runs, 0 hits, 5 Ks, 0 BBs).

Brett Williams with a 2 for 4 night including 3 RBIs, 2 doubles and a stolen base.

Carlos Rodon goes 2 for 3 out of the DH slot.

Trea Turner went 0-fer but still managed 2 RBIs.

NC State batters did not strike out in the game, the last time that happened was March 17, 2006. Wolfpack pitchers did not walk a batter in the game, for the second time this season.

Williams had a monster day with three RBIs, a run and a stolen base on a pair of doubles to the wall in left. Carlos Rodon started at designated hitter and contributed the first multi-hit outing of his career with two singles. Jake Fincher went 2-for-5 to reach base in a game for the 29th time in 30 contests. Trea Turner went hitless, but drove in two runs. Jake Armstrong supplied the Pack’s other RBI.

State leadoff hitters reached six times on the night, while only one East Carolina leadoff made it aboard. Williams’ three-RBI game is the most he’s had since Feb. 27 against New Mexico State. Brett Austin’s seven-game hit streak came to a close, but the sophomore extended his current reached-base streak to 19 games.

Wilkins (3-1) looked phenomenal in a rare start — his first since Feb. 24 and only the third of his career — striking out five while holding the Pirates hitless for five innings. Wilkins retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced. The only runner to reach came on a fielding error in the fourth. Josh Easley worked the next 2 1/3, holding the Pirates to one earned on four hits. Grant Sasser closed the deal for his second save of the year with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 and no hits allowed.

Box Score

Elon at home tonight, 6pm.

Good win pack, but got to say the state app for my phone never showed results for the game, but ecu’s website had play by play, whats up with that?

Most midweek games, especially once the conference season has started, have the live stats handled by the home team- this is pretty common.

    Thanks doc, got it!

I’ve thought Wilkins should have a go as a weekend starter since what I saw last season down the stretch. He’s great to have in the bullpen arsenal, but we need to be in games against the big boys first and then worry about holding on to win later.

    Thanks for the post WPr.

Are you sure this is a State post? Where is the “sky is falling” part?

  7. Dr. BadgerPack 04/03/2013 at 3:37 PM #

^Maybe the “sky is falling” crowd fears my wrath when it comes to baseball 😉

Give it time. Next game we lose they’ll be back.

^Got our W-L record wrong. Couldn’t type “for” properly. Got UNC’s record wrong. If you’re going to get me, use the right supporting stats. 🙂

Furthermore, the only folks who could conclude the sky is falling didn’t believe me when I said the team could lose 20 games and I wouldn’t be shocked.

“Are you sure this is a State post? Where is the “sky is falling” part?”

    It’s ECU

    Oh good lord.

Now that Warren and Lewis are back in the fold are we just looking for shit to bitch about now?

Well, we only beat Elon by 2 runs tonight, so there ya go. Have at it.

And don’t try the “it’s only Elon” line or you’ll reveal your ignorance, giving DBP an excuse to hammer ya.

So, Rodon went 2 for 3 as a DH? Well, since he’s sucked it up pitching, maybe he should switch to DH. (sorry, I can only manage smart aleck; not sky-is-falling).

By the way, nice pitching. Can’t do much better than no hits (and no walks? So a perfect 5 innings? Nice)

^One reached on an error- still not much room for improvement on the line for the night. Most impressive was the 59 pitches needed to get through the 5 innings. Good start, and still available the weekend out of the bullpen.

Was gonna do a separate recap of last night’s win over Elon (8-6), then decided I wasn’t in the mood.

Grant Sasser got the win (2.2IP, 1 run (0 earned) on 0 hits, 6Ks, 1BB), and DJ Thomas had a great outing (5.1 IP, 0 runs on 2 hits, 3Ks, 1BB) in early relief duty after yet another starter makes it only 0.2 innings (Keglovits this time, I think that’s at least twice for him but I didn’t bother to check to be honest).

Jake Armstrong was 2 for 2, 3 RBIs, a run scored, 2 BBs and 2 stolen bases. Senay was 2 for 4 with an RBI, a double and 2 runs scored; Turner was 1 for 4 with a run, a walk and his 10th stolen base; and Rodon DH’s again, going 1 for 3.

Incidentally, Rodon’s current .235 avg might not be stellar, but considering it was .091 prior to the past 2 games (3 for 6 combined) I’d say he’s going in the right direction, which is nothing but good for the Pack.

Hey, at least Elon didn’t put up 24 on us this time.

    Good for DJ,

I’ve always thought he had to “right stuff” if he could add another pitch to his repertoire.

He started his Freshman year with a bang. There were some concerns that he only had two go to pitches he could locate. If a Lefty can get three than he’s dangerous. 4-5 like Rodon, then your a gem.

2 for 2 against North Carlolina teams is an omen for good things. Throw out the record and name of the teams. Their rosters are full of former NC high school players who feel overlooked by the ACC school in NC.

Outside of Florida, I don’t think you’ll find as much fierce competitive games when Major Conferece and Mid Major foes lock horns. Just ask the Gators after the lost to Florida Gulf Coast on their home turf (which is a glorified Little League ballpark BTW 😉

Well after all, it was only Elon.

We need to break out the brooms versus the Turkeys over the weekend. Get us over .500 in conference before some Goliath’s ahead.
