ACC in Europe?

This just was posted a few minutes ago and this is thinking outside the box. Even with the Notre Dame-Navy game in Dublin last year, this was not something I would consider as an option. CBS Sports has talked to commissioner John Swofford about playing games in Europe.

ACC basketball and football across the pond is a possibility

The ACC is feeling its new-found solidarity. So much so, that an idea has been raised about playing ACC football and basketball games in Europe, commissioner John Swofford told CBSSports.com.

“We need to think big,” Swofford said. “One of the things we brought up to our schools last week was we may play football, we may play basketball in Europe. Across the pond, so to speak.”

All I could think about was how happy Gary Williams and Maryland must be to be leaving the conference. Can you imagine how mad they would be if told to play Duke in say Berlin?

    to Berlin: 4397 miles.
    to Hawaii: 4792. Maui Invitational.
and remember the Great Alaska Shootout?

like this: two ACC teams fly to Berlin for 3 games.
the ACC teams play each other once, then they
play Euro teams using International Rules.

Oh yes… It’s all about the student athlete. Riiiiight.

    Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

We have a “big-thinking” comish who’s unable to maintain home-and-home Big Four basketball rivalries and on whose watch the Duke-State and Carolina-Wake Forest football rivalries have been limited to once every 4 years.

Now, he wants ACC football and basketball teams playing “across the Pond”. Why don’t we take advantage of this so-called new-found ACC solidarity and move the ACC Football Title Game and the ACCT to Europe? This would absolutely scare the EPL venues to death, not to mention the NYC venues as well.

The ACC doesn’t need to go to Europe, but its commissioner sure does, with a one-way ticket in hand.

“Across the pond”, that had a nice ring to it. Maybe Swoff should coin the phrase.

BRW- Scotland wants nothing to do with Roy and his “student” athletes. They can stomache haggis but not ties of plaid that bad.

What a waste of money and he will find a way for this to hurt NC State financially and athletically.

Free season ticket at PNC for every Euro-game ticket sold. Would that be enough reason to pay to seen that hot mess?

Bad idea unless Swofford can get the NCAA to waive some rules and let the teams go over to Europe over the summer and play some games.

I am pretty sure that Swofford is talking out of his butt here. He’s apparently managed to completely change the ACC and come out of it unscathed, which means the filter is off.

Believe it or not there are many in college athletics, including ACC Presidents, that hold him in very high regard.

“Thinking outside the box” – always a good idea
Acting on those thoughts can be where stupid comes into play.
Unless this idea can be something comparable to the trip to Spain, culturally enlightening for the guys and something that will attract recruits – can’t see any reason for it.
