A New “Mixtape” of Incoming Freshman Kyle Washington Is On Youtube

The more I see of Kyle Washington on film, the more I am impressed with him as a player — he’s got a nice mid-range jumper, power around the rim, and he can flush a dunk with ease.  That’s against prep competition, of course, which is a long way from competing against ACC competition, but this guy has the raw tools that could lead to him becoming a force down low for the Wolfpack and perhaps a star in the college game:

Washington will likely get a lot of experience next season as the undermanned Wolfpack will need as much help as they can get down in the paint.

Knows his strengths. Never looks “lost out there” as almost every big man looks at the Prep level when they’re having an off night or not being a focal point of the offense

Does he have raw ability? Tremendous amount.

Intangibles? Active, with a high motor.

Short term future Running with the Pack: Freshman can really struggle at times-almost unbearable to watch. But, be on the lookout-his game looks well tailored to our offense, which is all about timing, decision making, and efficiency. Look at what the WF guy did to us and don’t be surprised if Kyle puts on a show like that occasionally.

Comfortable with TJW playing the stretch 4 and Kyle providing depth there.

    Agreed.

His body is better developed than I expected as well. For some reason I was remembering him as being a bit lanky until I just watched this.

With the usual caveat about the risks of reaching judgments on the basis of highlight reels….

He appears to be a smooth player, under control, with a nice body. He handled the ball better than I would have expected. His body control was better than I expected, such as being able to double pump in the air, redirecting a shot, avoiding contact. He seems to have a versatile shot, including dunks, shots off the glass, layups, and a very nice jumphook. His range (granted it’s in hs) extends out to the 3-point line, not that he’ll need that for us, but the baseline jumper suggests he’ll be comfortable shooting the midrange jumper that our offense requires of big men. He seemed emotionally charged but under control. Couldn’t tell too much about his teamwork, although he set himself up for receiving some assists at least. Nothing really about him defensively. I’d tentatively expect him to contribute at least some on the frontline, either at the 5 or the 4. Hope he works on his body, his game, and if necessary his attitude and expectations before he arrives. Looks like a very promising player.

“Comfortable with TJW playing the stretch 4 and Kyle providing depth there.”

As I was watching the video, TJW was exactly who he reminded me of. Looks like he has a really soft touch 3-5 feet from the rim with his jump hook, something our big men didn’t seem to have in their bag of tricks this season. That should transition well when he plays against bigger, stronger competition in the ACC.

Really reminds me of a very young Brandon Costner, especially with that left-handed shot.

  6. Trout 04/12/2013 at 1:14 PM #

Love the fact that he is left-handed!

He has a very weird release for a southpaw. He doesn’t extend to let the ball roll off his fingers. It’s like he stops 3/4’s off the way when shooting. I do think he looks pretty good for sure and will really benefit our front line. Looks strong down low for such a young player.

Yea, but it is a quick release. Need that early on because defenders close out faster and have more length.

He also keeps the ball high-waist level and up to shoulder level fast before making a move. He has really worked hard on fundamentals regarding that. I can’t stress how many expletives that came from my mouth watching Howell and Leslie would hunch down and bring the ball to knee level before getting off a shot. I don’t even know if Refs will call a foul on the contact happening down low since it was so boneheaded a play in the first place.

If he can finish around the rim, that will be a big plus. Our guys seemed to have a lot of trouble getting close shots to fall this year for some reason (and not just when they were getting triple teamed). A jump hook would be a nice weapon.

It’d be nice to see the video. Can someone tell me how to get rid of the flash player “can i get in and dump stuff in your computer” msg that covers the view? And when will the “acc auto blast your speakers out” effect be removed on every page you visit here?

    Washington is awesome…

As Trout said…..he’s left handed which helps.

Maybe our guys will learn to defend a left handed player now. That quick release is nice.

By the way, Anya seems like a pretty sharp guy. Articulate, bright, talked alot about the family atmosphere and being a part of a team. The comparisons to Elton Brand are obvious but he is a very athletic 255 pounds. One of the things that stuck with me was the way he talked about his 90 minute conversation with Debbie Yow and how touched he was by hearing her talk about Kay’s struggle with breast cancer. Great heart of team kind of guy. Also, Dematha coach Jones talked about him being a four year starter and being part of two championships. Anya’s internals in terms of character and rapport and working within a system seem very strong.

I was wondering about a Marcus Melvin comp? Hopefully not quite as fixated on the three point shot, but HWSNBN skewed towards that anyway.

I have had several D-1 coaches tell me they thought that Washington was underated and that he played hard all the time.

    tools and motor? I’m in.

  17. haze 04/16/2013 at 7:23 AM #

    Yes, exactly. Tools & motor.

As our frontcourt stands, this fine young man is going to play a plenty… it’s a plus if he can be truly productive with that time!
