Wolfpack Dispatches Virginia in the ACC Tournament Second Round, 75-56

In a thoroughly dominating performance in the Second Round of the ACC Tournament, the Wolfpack defeated Virginia, 75-56.

Scott Wood was on fire in the second half, seemingly throwing in three point shots as if they were balls tossed at the side of a barn. The vaunted UVA defense could do little to stop the senior, who finished the game with 23 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. But that line doesn’t tell the whole story: Wood, often unappreciated for his defensive effort frustrated Virginia star Joe Harris for most of the night. Wood’s defensive effort was largely responsible for Harris being unable to set the tone and that put the Cavs out of synch for the game…and when the Wolfpack got back the ball, often it was Wood who was swishing the ball through the net or making a key pass to extend the Pack’s lead.

Despite a few “CJ” moments, Calvin Leslie had a hard-working game. His 17 points and 11 rebounds with three blocks were key, as was his effort throughout. Leslie was double-teamed for much of the day and had a tough day around the basket, but the mercurial junior made the most of a 5-17 shooting performance by never giving up on loose balls and coolly sinking 5 of his 7 free throws. His seventeen seemed to quietly accumulate, and on the surface it may have seemed like he had a bad game — but that impression would be wrong.

The boxscore cannot show the intangibles that make often make the difference between victory and defeat, and there, Leslie had perhaps his best game of the year. With 16:31 left, and the game still long in doubt, Leslie followed Scott Wood’s three a few moments before with an old-fashioned three-point play of his own, by driving past Evan Nolte for a score, the sinking the free throw that followed – a play that put the Pack up 44-25 and the game out of reach for Virginia. They never got closer than eleven after that, as the Wolfpack collectively had an answer for every Virginia parry the rest of the way.

Freshman TJ Warren was also solid, giving the Pack eighteen points in a game that saw starter Richard Howell largely frustrated throughout. Warren did have one junior moment when he was called for a technical by tossing the ball at the feet of a Virginia player after he was called for a foul. The Hoos sank one of the two free throws and then followed with a three, but that was only a whisper in a wind of the Wolfpack roars today in Greensboro.

Up tomorrow the Pack faces the only team to beat them at home this year, the Miami Hurricanes.

Discuss, and we will add more in a bit.

I would have to think that a win tomorrow would get us into the RPI top 20. That gets us no worse than a six by itself. Beating both UVa and Da U we would highlight the “Lo Brown Factor” for the committee and possibly nudge us to the 4 line.

  2. Pack1998 03/15/2013 at 6:26 PM #

Though I think we can beat a #1 in the 2nd round, I don’t want to play one.

Hoping we can move up the ranks of the NCAA seeds.

Agree if RPI top 20 how not a 6 or better.

Remember the rule of seeding, +/- 1 in relation to your RPI.

State is currently 29, that equals 7.25. So we’re a solid 7 right now but could fall backwards to an 8 or get a 6 with teams ahead of us losing today.

  4. BJD95 03/15/2013 at 6:36 PM #

There is NO WAY we seed below our RPI. Which will be 25-26 at worst, if we lose tomorrow.

Anything less than a 6 will be a major surprise, less than 7 totally out of the question.

Nothing on our resume is a black mark at all. Everybody has at least one Wake-ish loss on their resume. No worries.

Trouble posting…. To summarize, I think we are good

Gottlieb’s thimble full of knowledge is not constrained. LMFAO.

Hope we get Hess tomorrow. If we do, it’ll be house money.

I don’t think we fall back either just preparing everyone for what is a possibility. I think we’re a solid 7 at the moment with the #4 RPI tomorrow.

The last win worth discussion for State was the UNC win in Jan. So I expect that State will be seeded below RPI projection if they lose tomorrow.

^Completely agree. Lose tomorrow and I think 7, 8, or 9 is the range. Win, and we’re getting into 5 or 6 territory dependent upon Sunday …

Was at Game today, very good game to watch, worth the travel. Icing on the cake, sat next to Norm Sloan’s Brother!

I meant 4 seed in the conference. I’m actually just hoping they continue this momentum and seeding takes care of itself.

When I flipped it on today I immediately saw Lewis playing well and finding Warren for points. Looking forward to more of that.

Just read an interesting report a few minutes go. Apparently Rodney Rogers called CJ over pre game and had some words of advice/encouragement for him.

article from the news and Record…….

Rogers, who is confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed in a 2008 automobile accident, nodded for Leslie to come over when the Wolfpack forward was stretching on the baseline before the game, then spoke with him again as Leslie walked off the court.

“He was just letting me know I have to play like that, I have to lead my team like that,” said Leslie, who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. “That’s the only way we’re going to win is me playing like that.”

“He’s a good kid, but sometimes, he just gets down on himself,” Rogers said. “You can tell, the games they lost, he didn’t do nothing. As he goes, the team goes.”

Asked if he felt his advice had any effect on Leslie, Rogers said, “You saw how he played, didn’t you?”

  14. wufpup76 03/15/2013 at 8:16 PM #

^That is simply awesome, TLeo …

And I’m glad to hear Rodney Rodgers is still close to the game in some way. He was one hell of a college player.

  15. Wulfpack 03/15/2013 at 8:48 PM #

I have to tell you, seeing Rodney in that wheelchair last night really hurt. I grew up a Wake fan, knew Rodney and Randolph well, and to see him so helpless in that chair with a tube, it hurt. It hurt really bad.

I’m glad he gave Leslie that advice. He would do well to listen. Rodney is a living example that we should never take anything for granted. God speed to that man.

“The last win worth discussion for State was the UNC win in Jan. So I expect that State will be seeded below RPI projection if they lose tomorrow.”

True about the last RPI win worth was UNC but seeding also has to do with comparisons so lets take a look at the 4 above and below State according to the bracketmatrix which takes the average seeding of all predictions.

NOTE: All records and predictions before today’s games.

    4 Above: [Today’s Results]
    Colorado State (MWC) [Playing UNLV(23)]
    North Carolina (ACC) [Win FSU(79)]
    Creighton (MVC) [MVC Champion]
    Memphis (CUSA) [Win Tulsa(132)]

    NC State (ACC) [Win Virginia(68)]

    4 Below:
    Missouri (B12) [Loss to Mississippi(56)]
San Diego State (MWC) [Loss to #15 New Mexico(2)]
    Illinois (B10) [Loss to Indiana(6)]
Minnesota (B10) [Loss to Illinois(37) Thursday]

    Breakdown:
    Colorado St: 25-7 (11-5), RPI=17, RPI25=1-3, RPI50=3-6
    UNC: 22-9 (12-6), RPI=19, RPI25=1-6, RPI50=2-7
    Creighton: 27-7 (13-5), RPI=24, RPI25=0-0, RPI50=3-3
    Memphis:28-4 (16-0), RPI=16, RPI25=0-1, RPI50=2-3

    NCSU: 24-9 (11-7), RPI=29, RPI25=2-5, RPI50=3-5

    Missouri: 23-9 (11-7), RPI=31, RPI25=1-3, RPI50=4-4
    San Diego St: 22-9 (9-7), RPI=27, RPI25=3-6, RPI50=5-7
    Illinois: 22-11 (8-10), RPI=37, RPI25=4-4, RPI50=6-8
    Minnesota: 20-12 (8-10), RPI=33, RPI25=3-5, RPI50=5-8

There are a lot of games left to be played tonight so we’ll see what tomorrow morning looks like with today’s results but as of right now I only see one team that stands out and that’s San Diego State. Other than that I don’t see much separation between the teams. The question is what gets weighed more in the Record, RPI, vsRPI25, vsRPI50. State has a better vsRPI25 record than all 4 teams above them but worse than 3 of 4 below.

I don’t see State falling backwards in the seeding, not with all those losses by those behind the Pack. It’s moving up is the hard part because they all won (CSU not done yet)

I was always a Huge Rodney Rogers fan. He combined finesse with brute strength better than any other All Time ACC player.

Wanted to throw out this tid bit. Gott is now 6-2 (4-1 ACC) in postseason play as State HC. It’s a small sample size, but on day one when he was hired I think no one, maybe even himself, thought that this kind of post season success was attainable right from the get go.

The short clips showing what he tells his men to do when before entering the tunnel prior to tip off always get me fired up. Today’s was straight to the root of it all. “You came here to get a ring. So go out there and do it”. It’s mostly in his deliverance that I think makes him an underrated coach. The mindset is see that hurdle. Doesn’t matter how high, just take it over the top. He may not ever get us to being an upper tier ranked regular season team, but his tourney teams have some power behind their punch.

Lewis should be seeing more minutes. This guy has Corch written all over him. He is good, very good. The way he sees the floor is a sight to see. Can wait to watch this kid. He will be a Wolfpack great, I am sure of it.

Want to get a clip of the behind the back pass to a wide open Wood trey. Yesterday he had a no look over the head pass to Leslie that Calvin didn’t even no what to do with he was so shocked.

His D has improved more then anyone’s-even TJW considering how inept he was during the non conference games trying to defend the dribble penetration. I still like-for now-mixing TL and Purvis as the seventh man. Purvis is too jacked at Greensboro but he could just go off for 20 on any night.

  20. vtpackfan 03/15/2013 at 10:50 PM #

As soon as MacApooh gets in foul trouble the refs call a mystery foul on an FSU guy seconds later. Snaer didn’t even breathe on him.

State a 4th seed? Come back to reality fellas. NC State went into the weekend unranked. Even if they win the tourney, they’ll only jump up to a 5 or 6.

The committee is not going to bump us up a MINIMUM of 10 places and seed us as a top 16 team, no matter what we do this weekend.

At both sessions today, and enjoyed the State win over UVA. Came back for the evening session, rooting for Duke, with their fans on each side of me. Unfortunately had some loud tarhole fans in front of us, doing all the Maryland cheers. But we sat there and put up with it, but returned the favor in the second game, and in typical fashion, they got up and moved. They can dish it out but just can’t take it. Found it quite funny! Hope Saturday will be a ‘red’ day for both games. But if not, in the first. Another payback game we owe Miami.

Cell service in G’boro Col is LOUSY…..all those extra cells they brought in must be cooking hotdogs….

Couple of comments and a question…..am living on borrowed time on my droid as VZ is shutting down my Illegal Hot Spot.

First….what is the situation with Howell? He was not in much today? I tried to find info, but may have missed it…

Second….a seemingly very knowledgeable gentleman about my age wearing light blue behind me and I have had an engaging conversation. He seems to have a knack for the game. He called, mid way through, the UVA game that Scott would have a GOOD night….IF….
Scott was on the RIGHT side of the lane. I started watching and sure enough….he was like a robot. He missed a couple from the left side, but did drain one. Wood looked awesome tonight.

Third…Rodney Rogers caught my attention. My seats are right over the tunnel on the press side. They bring him in and out there and put him on the Team side. He is handled my two people and a lady. His custom rig is high tech, but that is what hurts. He has a full time O2 breathing apparatus hooked up to it. It is really a bummer to see him that way.

I did NOT catch the Calvin talk…..

Fourth, what I DID “catch” (as a novice) today was that Calvin only morphed 4 times into CJ. Then he did have a little “rest” time with Coach. I guess that Coach wanted to express his love for Calvin. He actually DID bring the ball out ONE time…..I nearly had to call 911.

In the first game, I noticed that Zo fed him and he kept prancing and dribbling. Scott was so open that he could have spread out his Yogi Bear picnic lunch….and then CJ started moving towards the goal. Scott sort of threw up his hand and went, “Oh Well….”. I then reminded myself of V’s quip about the only pass that Whitt ever made was at Lowe’s GF….so I guess it is in the PSYCHE….

The crowd during the UNC game was obnoxious….I even yearned for the FSU Chant to break the monotomy….

I predicted FSU would fold tonight……..pure BB logic….

Cimaron was NOT as aggressing in the Mascot game….

Who, you might ask, is Cimaron. Cimaron is the he/she/it MASCOT of FSU. For certain events, where PC is desired, FSU will bring out Cimaron (a shetland pony dressed in a BB outfit with war paint), rather than than Tonto on his steed.

Now THAT is a real let down……

    GO PACK….bring on the Hurricanes……

And just to add to the win today. Leslie and Brown, shot 8 of 27, yet we still win big. Can’t wait til they are on top of their game. Maybe tomorrow.

I think we are a 5 seed Right Now. Win the ACCT and move up to a 4.
