Round of 32 Open Thread, Redux

Fred Hoiberg’s bunch giving the Buckeyes all they can handle. Here’s to more competitive basketball (though Marquette/Butler was epic), and two blue losses today.

Guy with the afro on Kansas… is that Bubs?

  2. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 5:54 PM #

If the Holes don’t score the rest of the way, KS might just pull it out.

  3. Wulfpack 03/24/2013 at 5:56 PM #

Forgot just how big Kansas is. We gave a valiant effort but boy were they built like trees. I like Kansas to advance.

  4. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:03 PM #

They need to stop going through Withey on offense. Nothing but turnovers.

  5. elvislives 03/24/2013 at 6:03 PM #

I hope they’re showing this game at the Walmart electronics department. It’d be a shame if the biggest Tar Heel fans couldn’t watch it.

So I completely disagree with how officials have been told to enforce the rule…

But can someone explain why that Macadoodoo elbow to Withey’s eye wasn’t a Flagrant 1?

My understanding was that ANY elbow contact above the shoulders was a flagrant 1, regardless of whether the commentators feel there was intent or not.

  7. TheAliasTroll 03/24/2013 at 6:04 PM #

to be fair, Carolina is playing outstanding defense too

  8. wilmwolf80 03/24/2013 at 6:06 PM #

WTF is the call on the elbow to the face. If you have been watching coverage, they have discussed this rule all day. By the rule, contact to the head with an elbow is flagrant 1. There is no room for discussion. Yet, somehow when JMM does it, they call it inadvertent? Terrible. I can’t wait to not hear any explanation whatsoever about it. Hopefully Sir Charles brings it up.

  9. Alpha Wolf 03/24/2013 at 6:08 PM #

Well, for all the awesome play of the Tar Heels, they’ve yet to pull away and put this game in doubt for Kansas. I like the Jayhawks in the second half.

That play is gonna keep working.

Hairston/Bullock on the perimeter with a pin down screen coming from the center (or whomever Withey’s guarding). He’s not quick enough to contest that 3 point shot. Open all night.

  11. Wulfpack 03/24/2013 at 6:20 PM #

Kansas playing right into UNC’s hands. Withey has stunk it up.

“By the rule, contact to the head with an elbow is flagrant 1.”

    No such rule.

    “Kansas looks horrible. Horrible.”

Yeah – yeesh. They certainly are not imposing their will on the Holes – it’s unfortunately the other way around.

There’s so much wrong with the game today – not the least of which is the block/charge call. Geeeeze. Whatever happened to a NO CALL? When did it become a game of “let me see if I can flail my body under the offensive player and draw a charge”?

I thought this was supposed to be an offensive skill game. Instead, the way the game is called today the defense has all the inherent advantages. Thanks Coach k. I’m all for good/great defense, but damn.

I’m of the opinion that a charge should be OBVIOUS. Dropping the shoulder, hooking, barreling over a player who clearly has position established for at least two seconds. And if you’re not in position before an offensive player leaves his feet – then come on. That’s a ridiculous call.

    Sorry. End rant.

  14. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:36 PM #

No way can Minny keep up with this pace on offense. Gators shall advance.

This is turning into a very unlikeable Sweet Sixteen. I will just pull for Miami and the SDSU/FGCU winner.

  15. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:39 PM #

Agreed, 76. I would hate to be a forward in today’s game. You’re not allowed to have post moves. If you have the temerity to so much as turn around, defenders are there to fall down.

““By the rule, contact to the head with an elbow is flagrant 1.”

    No such rule.”

    Umm … http://www.ncaa.com/news/ncaa/2011-05-26/prop-approves-rules-changes

“An example of a Flagrant 1 foul would be when a player swings an elbow and makes illegal, non-excessive contact with an opponent above the shoulders.”

Edit: Sorry – I did not see the play in question, but technically your assertion is incorrect.

  17. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:43 PM #

I’ve never seen a team as sloppy with the ball as KS. How did they win so many games?

  18. Wulfpack 03/24/2013 at 6:44 PM #

I can pull for Miami, Wichita State, Oregon and Louisville. Also don’t have anything against Michigan.

Boy has this game taken a quick turn. Jayhawks have been awakened.

  19. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:46 PM #

I’ve seen plenty of incidental elbows to the head (see Creighton vs. Cincy in the last minute). They ALWAYS call it a flagrant 1. Always. Until McAdoo did it.

  20. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:48 PM #

I have nothing against the Ville and Oregon, either. I just want two teams I don’t hate in the F4.

  21. wufpup76 03/24/2013 at 6:51 PM #

    Florida is steamrolling …

And Kansas appears to no longer be the “at TCU” version of themselves. Maybe we’re on pace to have at least three of the first four games today have some late drama.

  22. TheAliasTroll 03/24/2013 at 6:53 PM #

” I will just pull for Miami and the SDSU/FGCU winner.”

That’s where my allegiances will lie as well. Also I’m probably in the minority, but i wouldn’t mind if K got another one either.

edit: although I did pick Florida to win it all.. so guess I’ll get behind them as well

  23. BJD95 03/24/2013 at 6:56 PM #

Maybe it’s better that Wal-Mart Nation got its hopes up early, only to have them stomped into the dust. But I’m still nervous.

  24. TheAliasTroll 03/24/2013 at 6:57 PM #

If Kansas loses this home game it will be one of the bigger choke jobs of this tournament.

  25. wufpup76 03/24/2013 at 6:58 PM #

Great ball movement there from kansas against the zone.
