Pack Loses Thursday Off, ACC Loses Last Shred of Credibility

In the most incompetently officiated game I have ever seen, on any level…NC State falls to the 5th seed and 11-7.

Anyone who doesn’t want to leave this bullshit joke of a conference needs their head examined.

Looking forward to Anya and Washington playing inside next year…also looking forward to a time when someone in the NCSU sports program can win WHEN they need to…

I think Tyler Lewis is going to be a winner who will help us overachieve instead of underachieve. Turn him loose next year and see what kind of difference it makes. By the time he’s a senior I bet we’ll be talking about hanging his jersey in the rafters.

  3. Wulfpack 03/10/2013 at 9:57 AM #

I agree, Rochester. Lewis is going to be Corchiani-type special. I sincerely believe that. He may be the guy to lead us to the next great era of Wolfpack hoops.

I let this one sink in overnight before posting and let the frustration of a 2-1/2 hour basketball foul shooting marathon ware off.

First of all it’s a road loss and every team in the country this year is struggling on the road and all have at least one or two wtf losses.

Second, we do not have top 10 talent – we can play on a top ten level, but we do not have that level of talent. RH is a beast, but a short one. CJ is a head case that can’t play a physical game. Zo is playing only his second year at point guard and still forces things at times. Wood is an elite 3pt shooter and? The freshman are, well, freshman; good ones, but still freshman. And the bench?

Match-ups will determine how far this team goes in either tournament and so will CJ’s focus or lack of. This team is better than last year with one exception – Painter coming off the bench.

We should have won yesterday, but that seems to be college basketball on the road this season. Let’s reserve judgement to see what life on a neutral court brings. And I guess we’ll all have to do the unthinkable in rooting for MD (maybe rooting against UVA is the better way to look at it), to make our road a little easier. BTW, that’s a long way from rooting for someone in order to make the NCAA’s.

Our players are a reflection of us.

I’ve watched enough ball this year to see what’s going on. The opposing coaches know it, the players, and the officials. That is, if you provoke us enough, we will lash out and totally lose our composure. What CJ Leslie did, hell what that 45 year old duffer in the stands did, is a manifestation of the anger and paranoia that permeates our athletic programs.

We saw it with Inge, we saw it with Hodge, we saw it with McCauley, we saw it last year with Big Rich after Wake, and we’ve seen it numerous times this year with Leslie and even Wood.

I am fairly convinced this is not coincidental, and the constant provocation by the officials, and the league tolerating other coaches instructing their players to do the same is just a more covert way for the league office to stick the screws to us.

  6. Wulfpack 03/10/2013 at 10:12 AM #

We absolutely do have top ten talent. Find me ten teams with better overall talent. Find me 10 teams that will place 3 and possibly four in the NBA. Find me ten teams with a better freshman class. Find me ten teams with a better shooter than Wood. That is why we were ranked in the top 10. That is why we were predicted to win the league, and why Leslie was a preseason All American.

Is CJL our basketball Amerson or is Amerson our football CJL?

Mr. Adventuroo, with all due respect…

I’m of the school where if you have something to say, then say it. Otherwise, people don’t need to hear about “undercurrents”. Does no good other than self promotion.

    “Wulfpack
03/10/2013 at 9:45 AM # I don’t think Gott is kissing Leslie’s butt. He calls him Calvin. He blasted him in the presser following his no show at UNC. I mean, as I have said, what is a coach to do? I am sure Gott is at his wits end with him. It would be a shame if this is the type of memory Wolfpack fans have of him. He has been a disappointment. And it’s all between the ears. He has all the ability in the world to shine at this level but hollow upstairs.”

Well said Wulfpack. I am sure Gott is as frustrated as the rest of us. Think about it, he has no idea what he will get out of his most talented player every game.

  10. Rochester 03/10/2013 at 10:55 AM #

CJ can be the best player on the floor any time he steps out there. He can also be the worst. I wish him luck in the future, but I’m ready for him to move on.

  11. choppack1 03/10/2013 at 10:57 AM #

Regarding the officiating, I can only assume that gott and yow are OK with it since they haven’t complained about it. No matter what happens with uva today, I think we can all agree the regular season has been a disappointment and the team has underachieved

  12. fullmoon1 03/10/2013 at 11:05 AM #

Don’t blame CJ, blame the acc’s tendency to study tendencies. The officials didnt call a travel on hands walker for 4 years and call it every time CJ sniffs the ball. How can a team adjust, play defense and even function in a game of shifting official “tendencies”?

  13. triadwolf 03/10/2013 at 11:07 AM #

    Wulfpack

Two teams in our own league are more talented – Duke and UNC, maybe 3. CJ is not even the best player on our team and probably won’t make first team ACC, maybe not even second team. The only lock I see for a long NBA career is Brown. I love Howell, but he and Wood will most likely be playing in another country. Leslie will get drafted based on potential, but will not be on a roster very long without significant changes and improvement. Our freshman are good, but they’re seeing the normal ups and downs of playing the rigors of an ACC schedule for the first time.

I’m not saying we’re chopped liver, but we are not top 10. BTW, talent is an overall package that includes the mental part of the game; you cannot ignore that part of it.

  14. ADVENTUROO 03/10/2013 at 11:10 AM #

    Mr. MP….
This is NOT self promotion. Average Non WPC members to the highest donors all have “sources”. Some good….some bad.

I only offered this as some comments on WHY the team is NOT playing like the 1983 team. That team was focused and had no diversions. Look what happened when Gollenbach’s book came out.

I will also comment that Coach Lowe’s Second season SHOULD have been better….but factor in his personal situation and the team’s little Peyton Place drama and THEY did not live up to their potential.

We can only win, assuming we have better than average, but not TOPS in the nation talent, when we play cohesively and ALL members have a common goal and are focused and NOT distracted.

Part of our problems this year APPEAR to be OFF COURT (locker room or wherever)…..and unless some divine intervention happens, it will NOT improve in the ACCT. NOW, maybe the Survive and Advance mentality will kick in…probably so….butwill it match year’s? Wish it would, but I think that last year was an anomaly as was Coach Lowe’s ACCT run in 2007.

Were we OVER HYPED? Probably. Did the DRAMA result in some close losses? IMO…YES!

The “undercurrents” (both) have been discussed here….all I suspect, based on NON internet sources, is that the drama behind the scenes is real….one will solve itself…..and hopefully the other is PURE fiction…

    Time will tell……

  15. fullmoon1 03/10/2013 at 11:11 AM #

I didnt see an attitude problem with CJ. He was clearly upset with some calls but he was cheering on his teammates. He did not deserve a tech. He simply questioned a call, how many times does this happen in a game for every player on the floor? Officiating is making the game as unwatchable as it is unplayable.

  16. choppack1 03/10/2013 at 11:16 AM #

I won’t be surprisd if Lewis transfers after this year. He has to wonder what he can do to get more playing time if lo brown isn’t hurt. I see Barber getting those minutes next year.

  17. wufpak77 03/10/2013 at 11:28 AM #

hi all,,,never posted until now,,have enjoyed reading for the past couple yrs tho. i must say that as a loyal lifelong fan it does get unbearable to watch at times. any and everything that could go wrong did in the last 5 minutes. we WILL be better off next year without leslie. we’ll probably start cat, lewis, purvis, warren, and anya. our lineup next yr will look alot like unc’s this yr. i really believe that we will be a better team next yr,,,smaller yes but fast as lightning!! we will not be expected to do much but will suprise many. im also hearing that the kid from new mexico jr college is legit and gott is going after him hard……this yr is rough but the future is bright!!!

  18. eas 03/10/2013 at 11:40 AM #

Man if Lewis transfers I will be pissed. That kid is a great PG with an awesome attitude. Then again if isn’t going to get minutes then why stay? It would be an absolute shame if that happens. So much potential with Lewis running the offense.

  19. MP 03/10/2013 at 11:46 AM #

Mr. A… What is the 2nd “undercurrent” that we hope to be fiction?

  20. TLeo 03/10/2013 at 11:52 AM #

Man, don’t even think that about Lewis leaving. If Brown declares for the draft that takes care of it, but if he stays I do believe Lewis still deserves more playing time. It was a bit of a blessing that Brown went down for a few games even though we lost. If not, Lewis would have never seen the court and we wouldn’t have seen how good he already is. Brown has tendencies to get lazy at times with his passes, dribbling and sometimes penetrates out of control. Lewis has been really good at penetrating to draw defenders and dishing off to the open man. If Lewis were to leave we really would be screwed.

  21. gcpack 03/10/2013 at 11:52 AM #

Lewis transferring because of playing time??!!. Completely absurd chop pack. You must have turned into a baby blue troll.

Between comments here and all the nitpicking by the radio mouths in Raleigh I can’t understand it.

Look people we have the best coach since Valvano. He recruits very well. Maybe better than V.
Instead of bitching about 10th place in the ACC (Lowe) or insufferably boring ball(Herbert) we now KNOW we are in the Dance and are debating seeding. What the hell is wrong with that?

Do we want to have a longtime highly competent coach and similar program or do we expect championships in two years or else? I am tickled to death that we actually have a decent program so lets keep it around for years.

I sat behind the TV announcers at the Syracuse game last year.
Pretty lucky to get those seats and Hubert Davis was doing the color on the game. I asked him what he thought of Gottfried.

Davis said State basketball is relevant again. This coming from a UNC guy.

We are in great shape with Gott and unless we fall back into mid or low level acc for multiple seasons enjoy our NEWLY competitive and productive basketball program!

Right now we have a golden goose
so why are complaining that one gold egg from one season may not be the largest?

    Unbelievable.

  22. triadwolf 03/10/2013 at 11:57 AM #

I don’t think Lewis will transfer next year. He knew he was playing behind a great point guard this year and I don’t think his current playing time is a problem. Earlier in the year he was probably frustrated, but he was not ready at that point.

Next year Barber will be a freshman so you have to expect that Lewis will be our starter when the season begins. What happens as the year rolls on is the question.

That’s the problem with recruiting a bunch of top ranked players; they all think they should be playing. That’s probably the hardest thing for college coaches in today’s game – nobody accepts being a role player anymore.

  23. Wulfpack 03/10/2013 at 12:15 PM #

I would think if there is any chance one of the freshmen transfer it would be Warren. Between his re-tweet and some of what I have seen, he appears not to get along too well with some of the guys. Maybe once the older guys move on it will be different. Let me be clear I don’t expect it, just that if I had to guess he wold be the most likely candidate. This team is Lewis’ team beginning next year

Brown, Leslie and Howell will all be drafted. I will guarantee it.

Duke has Plumlee and perhaps Kelly. Who else?

UNC has Hairston and maybe Macadoo. Bullock?

Whose freshman class was ranked higher?

Think coach K would like to have Wood with their drive and kick?

Leslie was a preseason All American. Now he will be lucky to make second team All ACC. Don’t put that on the writers. He most certainly has the talent to be great. He is just a headcase and sulks under pressure.

I will stand by my comment that we are the most talented team in the league. I am not alone in that opinion.

  24. ldr of the pk 75 03/10/2013 at 12:45 PM #

Probably not much else to say at this point.

Overall, I like the direction we are headed, Wolfpack Basketball is relevant again. But no one can be happy with the lack of progress of this team. They are the supreme underachievers in the country this year. And forget the referee argument, these players have written the story this year. While CJ perhaps is the biggest question mark of the year, there is plenty of blame to go around. Lack of defense, lazy effort at times, missed FT’s, inopportune turnovers, by some or all players, have contributed to a finish well below where anyone thought.

We can certainly get hot enough to do ok in the Dance, but don’t look for any Cinderella stories. The problems that have affected this team in the regular season will be exploited by the good teams at the NCAA level.

Perhaps its just another baby step as we learn to go from crawl to walk again.

  25. willalwaysbelieve 03/10/2013 at 1:50 PM #

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE quit blaming the refs, the ACC, and any other conspiracies you might have going. It destroys your credibility. Seriously, can you imagine elite programs like Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC, etc. saying things like that? Grow up.

Regarding yesterday’s game, we lost because our point guard continues to dribble too much and had 7 turnovers, Howell and Leslie missed 8 foul shots between them, and we were killed on the boards after totally dominating the boards against the same team a couple of weeks ago. Most of the team failed to show up despite what was at stake, most glaringly Leslie.

Face it, this team is what it is. Pretty good but not great. A ton of talent but missing the intangibles that make champions.
