Very important win for the Pack tonight vs the Jackets in Atlanta.  Also today, BC tops UVa and the Heels top FSU, which leaves the ACC standings as follows:

Clemson 5-11 13-15
Boston College 5-11 13-16
Wake Forest 5-11 12-16

Remaining schedules are as follows:

U*NC

  • 3/6 – @UMd

    UVA loses v md.

    Unc loses v duke.

    State plays Friday?

  2. JeremyH 03/03/2013 at 9:28 PM #

Comcast Center is a tough place to play, but can Maryland knock off UNC Wednesday? I see Lunardi has UMD as “next four out” so clearly they are playing for an NCAA birth.
Also, like us, UVA is very beatable on the road, can FSU get it together on Thursday?
Also can’t look past Wake Forest, before the game or after halftime for that matter (wink, nudge). Now that I think of it, that game should be payback.

  3. Alpha Wolf 03/03/2013 at 9:34 PM #

Comcast Center has been rated as one of the ten toughest places to play, and for good reason — the place is a howling hell of obscenity and Terrapin a$$holery.

  4. MrPlywood 03/03/2013 at 9:46 PM #

Am I right that State’s RPI has dropped from 25 to 31 following the two recent wins?

  5. TLeo 03/03/2013 at 9:48 PM #

I despise Md about as much as the ‘holes but have to hope for a Md win.

  6. Alpha Wolf 03/03/2013 at 9:53 PM #

^ I usually hope for a sinkhole like the one in Florida this weekend to suddenly open up and swallow up both teams. Failing that, I’ll hope for the Terps to pull out a win.

  7. blpack 03/03/2013 at 10:00 PM #

Holes and Hoos both lose one more time. We have to make sure we do not. Big win today in ATL.

Re: top 4 finish in ACC

If UVA wins out, and UNC loses to Maryland but beats Duke at home, then even if we win out, UNC wins the tiebreaker (with us)?

    edit:
    according to http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/021203aad.html
” If the two tied teams split their regular season games, the tie is broken by comparing each team’s records against the team occupying the highest position in the standings, and then continuing down until one team gains an advantage.”

How is this rule interpreted when the teams at the highest positions are not played an equal number of times by the tied teams? UNC lost twice to Miami and split with UVA. We only lost *once* to Miami and lost in the only game with UVA. If this means that UNC wins the hypothetical tie-breaker, that does seem fair to compare 1-4 v. 0-2.

If that’s true then we have to win out and UVA has to lose one game or UNC has to lose to Duke. (Is that correct?)

(Of course, also then, if UVA loses their last two, we only have to win or of our last two.)

Not to adjust the course of this thread too much, but if given my druthers, I would like to see us play UVa on Friday. (Ideally we’d be a #4 seed.) Pulling for 1 more UVA slip up.

This team seems to play well when it can exact payback. Part of the reason I like a potential UVa then Miami draw in the ACCT.

Of course, it would be waaay easier to start as a 4 than a 5 to win the whole ACCT – and be the official ACC Champs.

  10. Wufpacker 03/03/2013 at 10:37 PM #

“Not to adjust the course of this thread too much”

Had to chuckle a bit at this. I figure this one has a 50/50 shot at becoming unreadable by midday tomorrow, and a 1/4 shot that someone will call someone else a bad fan (or worse) before all is said and done.

Courses? We don’t need no stinking courses. (wait, that sounds like what U*NC athletes would say)

As far as scenarios for ACC Tourney seeds go, I mostly just want us to play well and win the games in front of us. If it happens that U*NC and/or UVa open the door for us then all the better, but mostly I’d rather be playing well from the five than poorly from the four (I know it’s not an either/or situation, just saying).

If UNC loses to Maryland but beats Duke and UVA wins out we are out? Is that correct??

  12. tann84 03/03/2013 at 10:43 PM #

Got to pull for FSU and Maryland at this point.

Hopefully FSU can finish off UVA so we don’t have to sweat out the Maryland game but I think thats our best hope of not having to play on thursday.

As much as it is unpleasant to say it the truth is that UNC is playing too well right now, can’t see them losing to Maryland. I hope they do I’ll be rooting for that to happen, Maryland is a tough place to play but they turn the ball over too much. Even then we’ll need them to lose again to Duke if UVA doesn’t lose again.

I too would like to play UVA again on friday then play miami on saturday then get a shot at Duke/UNC on Sunday. Of course I’d rather play UNC again than Duke. I think we can beat them with a small lineup of Brown/Purvis/Wood/Warren/Leslie and sub in Howell for Leslie. Either way its going to come down to the wire to see if we can win the #questforfriday.

Huge win this evening … Great job. Good performance all around I felt … Disappointed they dinged us on the boards, but it happens. We scratched out a win even with no perimeter threat at all – so good job.

As for seeding, let’s make it simple – let’s win out and hope that Virginia trips up against FSU and/or Maryland. We’re good that way regardless of what the CHeats do.

Of course, I’d just as soon see them lose out as well 🙂

Have to admit though, the Holes have been a lot better about winning the games they can win than we have. Of course, it’s my belief that every game is winnable for this Pack team. I don’t think that’s the case for Cheater Hill … I believe we have more talent, but they’re playing better team ball. That sucks.

Oh well … Hooray for March! Win out and here’s to not being on the bubble …

It is disappointing to be speaking of a 4th place finish in the ACC this year. Nevertheless we got hosed more than any other ACC team in modern (maybe all) of history. At least since the Oliver Purnell teams of recent years.

The Maryland, UVA, Duke (Cameron) and Wake forest games of this year were especially excruciating. Not to mention we were screwed against the most recent GA Tech game and Clemson.

Did I mention Miami beat us after 2 uncalled fouls of the last play? The Maryland, Duke and Wake games, however, were blatant unsubstantiated indiscriminate fraudulent games from start to finish. And we still almost won.

What other school can objectively say that they feel okay with the officiating on only 50% or less of ACC games? This isn’t like the usual years of State suffering officiating against the blues. This year was by far the worst ever in NC State Shit officiating history.

Back to Clemson, the only other team that got f’d in the butt with no lube or dinner were the Oliver Purnell Clemson teams of recent years against UNC and Duke. Especially painful memories of a games against UNC creep into my mind and torture me. At least those teams most likely (I didn’t watch) had decent officiating against the non-blues.

Fuck the ACC. I look forward to its implosion.

  15. tuckerdorm1983 03/03/2013 at 10:51 PM #

look there are 16 scernarios (assuming we win out).

In 12 of those if UVA loses one of its last two games we don’t have to play on thurs.

In 4 others UVA wins both of its last two games and:
    1. UNC wins both games against Duke and Maryland (we play thurs)
2.UNC beats Md and loses to Duke (tie breaker we don’t play thurs)
3.UNC loses to Md and Beats Duke (tie breaker we play thurs)
4.UNC loses to MD and loses to Duke (we are ahead of UNC in rankings and don’t play thurs)

  16. tann84 03/03/2013 at 10:58 PM #

    Thats not right tucker.

If UVA wins out and UNC loses to Duke and beats MD then we still play thursday.

    http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/022607aaa.html

If three or more teams are tied in the standings, the following procedures will be used:
    a. The combined record of conference games between the tied teams involved will be compiled. Ties will be broken, and seedings assigned, based on the winning percentage of the combined conference records. The higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group is unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1; 1-0 is the same as 2-0; 2-0 is the same as 4-0; 2-1 is the same as 4-2; 1-0 is better than 1-1; 0-1 is the same as 0-2; 0-2 is the same as 0-4).

So NCST is 1-2 vs UVA/UNC

    UVA is 2-1 vs NCST/UNC

    UNC is 2-2 vs UVA/NCST

So that means that UVA gets the 3 seed, UNC gets the 4, and state gets the 5.

We need UVA to lose one or UNC to lose both to avoid a 3-way tie at 12-6. That is the only way we are not playing on thursday. UVA right now is tied with us at 10-6, UNC is 11-5. If UNC loses one game only and UVA wins out then we go into the 3 way tie and play on thursday.

  17. JeremyH 03/03/2013 at 11:13 PM #

So UNC losing to Duke can only help us if then already lost to Maryland and UVA has won out. (Assuming we win out.)

  18. 44rules 03/03/2013 at 11:13 PM #

It was great to watch the win in person. Fantastic seats about 10 rows up.
The team really looked like it hustled. I watched Calvin a lot on defense. Frankly, when they bang down low, he just isn’t big enough to keep bigger kids out of the lane. But he played hard D mostly, got his hands active and occasionally jumped in front of his man to knock balls away.
Scott Woo ran all over the place on D tonight. Yes, he’s slow. Yes, he gets beat off the dribble. But if everybody had hustled like he does we would have had a much better year.
Great win. I’ll stay out of all the scenarios because they hurt my head.

  19. ILPackfan 03/03/2013 at 11:17 PM #

Best scenario at this point is for this team to control the only thing it can–play winning ball the next two games and finish strong. Can’t control what UVA or UNC do. Just win out and hope for the best.

  20. MrPlywood 03/03/2013 at 11:18 PM #

No need to worry. State will win out, Carolina will go 1-1, and UVA will go 1-1.

  21. ryebread 03/03/2013 at 11:24 PM #

Simply put, we just need to keep winning. I think our team is better than UVA or UNC. Ask me which one is most likely to win out, and I think it is us. If we do what we need to do, the rest of it will work itself out.

Good win today. GT has been tough at home this year and play that grind it out style that we’ll see in the tournaments.

I really like our 7 man rotation. We’re getting valuable and productive minutes out of each and every player. Of course it doesn’t hurt when 4 out of 7 of McDonald’s AA’s, one is one of the best shooters in school history, one is one of the best rebounders in school history and one is the best PG in the ACC. 😀

  22. Alpha Wolf 03/04/2013 at 1:47 AM #

^ And one of the ones coming off the bench is a MCD AA, has a very decent 3 point jumper, is 80% from the FT line and can drive into the paint and score. And oh yeah, takes good care of the ball too.

Talking about Lewis, of course, and I think he is gonna be a star before he is done with his Wolfpack uniform. He really reminds me of a young Chris Corchiani.

  23. MrPlywood 03/04/2013 at 1:59 AM #

I really liked watching Lewis at the line today. Something tells me that won’t be the last time we see that. I like the “close out crew” of Lo, Lew and Woo.

  24. Wufpacker 03/04/2013 at 2:33 AM #

Agreed. Definitely think Lewis has earned/proven himself worthy of crunch time PT at this point. Especially given our frequent adventures at the FT line, I’m not sure how one could argue against him being on the floor if we’re needing to hit FTs to close out a win at this point.

Also Plywood, I’m interested in your earlier post….

“No need to worry. State will win out, Carolina will go 1-1, and UVA will go 1-1.”

You’re sounding like a man who has that info on good authority….any chance your source can come up with the Powerball numbers before Wednesday? 😀

  25. mikeD 03/04/2013 at 6:57 AM #

Was able to go to the game with my wife & 2 yr old – just wanted to say the GT fans in attendance were very classy & respectful. I heard a few whispers of the type “hey, calm down, theres a little girl up there”. Made for a very enjoyable first ever Wolfpack game for her!
