In what seems like a theme for the day for Wolfpack sports, State Baseball (15-5, 2-3 ACC) fell behind early and never could quite make a run as they fell in game two at Wake by a final score of 13-4 to even the weekend series at one game apiece.
The Deacs jumped on the Pack early as they would put up a five spot on the board in the 1st inning behind the power of Jack Carey’s fourth blast of the year, this one with the bases juiced, and Kevin Conway’s solo shot (1).
The Pack would get two back in the top of the 2nd on a Sam Morgan sac fly and a Jake Armstrong RBI single but would leave the bases loaded. Wake would answer with two more in their half of the 2nd to build the lead back to five, and the Pack would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Freshman Brad Stone would start and take the loss (1-1) giving up 7 runs in a single inning of work, but would depart after failing to retire a batter in the 2nd. On the (short) day for Stone, his line was 1.0 IP, 7 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits, 2 Ks and 2 BBs.
Jake Fincher went 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Tarran Senay went 1 for 4, getting his 4th homer of the year in the 8th. Brett Austin was 1 for 4 with a double (11, 1st ACC) to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
The Deacs and Pack square off Sunday at 1 pm in Winston-Salem for the rubber match. The winner takes the series.
