NCAA Tournament: NC State vs Temple in Dayton on Friday at 1:40pm on TBS (7:05pm update)

2013 NCAA Tournament vs Temple

NC State received the East Region’s 8th seed in the East Region and will play Temple in Dayton, Ohio on Friday. With a win, the Wolfpack would most likely play #1 seeded Indiana on Sunday.

The 24-10 Wolfpack finished #33 in the RPI and was generally projected by most ‘Bracketologists’ to land on the eight line. The committee SAYS that they try to adjust bids and seeding for key injuries through the season. It is hard to imagine that NC State received such consideration for Lorenzo Brown’s injury this year. The Wolfpack was 24-7 for the year with our starting point guard and finished the season 8-3 after Brown returned from injury.

Miami, who defeated NC State in the ACC Tournament semi-finals yesterday, claimed the #2 seed in the same South region as the Wolfpack. The Hurricanes become the first team in ACC history to win the the regular season out-right and claim the ACC Tournament Championship and NOT get a #1 seed in NCAA Tournament. With the Canes getting slotted to play in the East I have to wonder why NC State wasn’t sent to the West to play opposite Gonzaga?

In other news of interest to NC State and Atlantic Coast Conference fans:

  • Duke’s #2 seed in the Midwest Region challenges a lot of rationale. The Blue Devils finished the season as the #1 rated team in the RPI, yet were selected to be in the same region as the #1 overall seed (Louisville). That would intimate that the #1 RPI translated into a #8 overall seed. But, the NCAA insists they don’t use an ‘S-curve’ methodology and that seeding is almost more like slotting — done by location.

  • North Carolina gets an 8 seed in the South Region and will play Villanova on Friday. With a win, the Tar Heels will probably play Roy Williams’ former school, Kansas. The Jayhawks knocked both the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels out of the last year’s NCAA Tournament.

  • If the NCAA did our local schools any favor it is that they scheduled State, Duke and Carolina to all play on a Friday and Sunday cadence. If all three Triangle teams win on Thursday then this area is going to be CRAZY on Sunday!!

  • Virginia and Maryland both fell short in their quest to make the Tournament – leaving only four ACC teams in this year’s tournament. Making it even more interesting that NC State and Miami are in the same bracket.

  • At the end of the day, I think it is fair to draw the conclusion that the ACC really got screwed at every turn this year. If Billy Packer was still working for CBS I could guarantee you that we’d at least get some of these ACC-centric questions asked this evening.

  • I must’ve been too deep in typing — someone please point me to Arizona State’s seed? #sarcasm

  • SFN will do our best to get interviews with Kentucky’s Ryan Harrow and Old Dominion’s Deshawn Painter to discus their NCAA plans this year.
  • Our game against Temple is scheduled to play Friday at 1:40 pm EDT on TBS.

Beat Temple, break through IU and it’s on, y’all. IU would be the marquis win this team lacks. It is due. Of course, gotta beat Temple first. I see a second round exit or a deep run….I am thinking deep run. Hope Gott is force feeding them Survive and Advance all week.

Temple has wins over Villanova, Syracuse, St. Louis and VCU. To beat the Owls, the defense has to step up against their excellent guards. Miami’s back court sliced us up Saturday with the drives and dishes. Need to hit the boards hard, make FTs and take good shots.

Every single prediction I have made about this team is wrong, So I predict we loose by 40 against Temple and Leslie and Brown go Pro.

    who’s with me,

“Temple has wins over Villanova, Syracuse, St. Louis and VCU.”

Temple also has losses against UMass and St. Bonaventure, teams that we blew out. And Temple was destroyed by Duke, a team we beat handily once.

Sure, we need to defend their excellent guards. But on the flipside, they are a poor defensive team. They gotta guard us too, pal!

I’m expecting an easy win in the first round.

Good point but I believe our legs were fried Saturday. I don’t expect that to be an issue Friday.

A fresh Zo Brown shut down Erick Green on Thursday. We played very good basketball both Thursday and Friday. I fully expect we will come out ready this Friday against Temple.

I’m also not ready to write off the game against Indiana. If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best. We are capable of getting it done.

    Interesting post by ‘Roo.

I think UNC definitely took one on the chin if you look at their RPI.

However, I think the general sport fans out there need to understand – the main tool that the selection committee uses – the RPI – is basically designed to reward mid-majors at the expense of the majors.

The big problem with RPI is that it leaves off margin of victory/defeat…When you are evaluating the worth of 100 teams, this is a critical factor. Any dataset that ignores this essentially is ignorning valuable data.

Bilas pointed out that UVa had 6 wins over RPI top 50 opponents, the 4 teams that got the last at-large bids, had a COMBINED 3. Think about that.

However, for UVA, the reality is that they probably would have been in the dance if they’d managed to go 2-1 vs. the CAA. Instead, evidently, UVa had to go 12-6 in the ACC or beat us in the quarterfinals to get a bid.

Oh well, I don’t weep for them…and aside from the TarHeels, it couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

As for UNC – they got screwed. If you look at RPI, theirs was very respectable. For them to be an 8 is surprising. They fall into the “well, who did you beat” trap…but as Bilas points out, evidently, that didn’t matter, so it’s not fair to use that as a criteria is it?

If Zo can limit Wyatt and Oladipo like he did Green, I like our chances. Make Zeller beat us if he can. Plumlee couldn’t. Pretty much the same guy.

The Negative Nellie crowd needs to go back and watch the Duke game in PNC or the UVa game in the ACCT before they fold the tents on this team. We are inconsistent. I’m not about to argur that point, but our peak performance is good enough to whip anybody in the field. I like the fact that we have some tournament experience on the roster and we did play two solid games in the ACCT. I think we were worn down somewhat on Saturday and Howell wasn’t 100%. The state of Ohio was good to us last year in the first two games so I’ll cast my mojo lot with the location factor.

The team has a week to prepare and heal up. It’s never a great draw being an 8/9, but we have a chance to make a little hay. If they’re on their game (and that seems to be the question these days), they have a chance at playing the second weekend–which, at this point, is all anyone can ask.

I’m making no predictions. We’ll see how the lads do in Ohio on Friday. Go Pack!

  11. Wulfpack 03/18/2013 at 1:08 PM #

Zeller is twice the player Plumlee is. Very skilled. We will have our hands full.

  12. Rick 03/18/2013 at 1:58 PM #

We can win both games but we can lose them both too.

I want to see us play hard and well and if we lose so be it.
I have enjoyed this year for the most part and would like to see it continue.

  13. vtpackfan 03/18/2013 at 3:06 PM #

I haven’t been as “Sabermetrically” inclined since KenPom went subscriber. One thing that is eye opening in statistical analysis pertains to the Owls’ FG % Def, Def Rebounding. If your not exceptional at holding down teams effiency when your on D than playing the #4 team in the country at FG% is not a favorable matchup. On top of that, if statistics show you have had problems cleaning the glass defensively than you are really closing your window for error. Give the Pack many second and third opportunities and you’ll be taking the ball out from the rim and inbounding a lot.

Not to get too cocky, but our blowout wins vs common opponents they lost to (or won by one point @home) negate a little of the “they best Syracuse, Nova, and St Louis. I won’t count their blowout loss to Duke because that was just a different Duke then we saw or will ever be again this year.

“we made the tournament 2 years in a row! wow what an achievement!”. Really???? Until we field a team of kids who play their asses off throughout the year and complete on a consistant basis these years are no different than all the other dissapointments in the past.

FYI bros, Shane Larkin has already announced he’s back next year. CJL will fit right in with the NBA crowd, playing when you “want” to is how they roll.

  15. packalum44 03/18/2013 at 3:26 PM #

We were UNC’s best win!!! Hahahaha. Think about that for a second.

They didn’t beat anyone!! Had their chances.

We “beat” Miami and Duke. Might not have had a W in the Miami game but we beat them. Just like Green Bay beat Seahawks last year and Colorado beat AZ.

A bad call/no call at the end of the game doesn’t change the logic. Not that I think the committee penciled us in as winning that game but damn sure saw a 1 point loss compared to the spanking the blues got from them.

  16. packalum44 03/18/2013 at 3:36 PM #

“Hell, VCU finished the year ranked and earned a 5 seed. Better year than us so far.”

And still no one gives a shit about them or their awful mid-major style of basketball.

  17. TheAliasTroll 03/18/2013 at 4:30 PM #

Our defense is a joke if we play against a team with capable guards.

If we do play the game to our potential then yes we can compete with just about any team in the country. I am far from ready to say (as some of you guys are insinuating) that our best should beat any other teams best. I think if we played our best consistently we might be the 15th best team in the country.

But see, the problem I have with the current team is how many times this season has the team truly played up to their potential in back to back games? By my count that would be a big fat zero. I still don’t think we’ve matched the intensity that we displayed since when we beat Duke. That’s not a recipe for success in a one and done tournament format.

CJL will be the key for us in this tournament. He has been the great variable for much of the season. Is he ready to pack his bags for a career in Europe, or does he he want to show that he has NBA chops?

He is our most versatile player, and we suffer when he fails to show up. All of our other guys have such defined skill sets and roles, it is almost weird: Wood – 3 ball; Howell – rebound; Lo- Drive to the Rim; Buckets – short range slasher; Purvis – fast break finisher.

CJL can do all of the above, except shoot the 3 ball. If he can finally play to his potential, we will be a really tough out in the tourney.

  19. choppack1 03/18/2013 at 7:29 PM #

I disagree. I think lo brown is our key. When he struggles and plays without focus, we lose. Everything breaks down when he is not playing well and he doesn’t usually get in foul trouble so he never comes out.

  20. Wulfpack 03/18/2013 at 8:10 PM #

Brown is our key. We can win even if CJ is a no show. But if Brown struggles, as he did against Miami, we are in trouble. He must protect the ball, and he is going to have to hit some from the outside and try to get others involved off the drive. He really had a very bad game against Miami – one of his worst of the year.

Listened to some sports talk today and most believe we have the better shot at beating Indiana than UNC does Kansas. I agree. They were also saying how Warren should consider the NBA. Hope that never sees the light of day. We need him badly next year.

    TBS = Temple Beats State?

  22. tuckerdorm1983 03/18/2013 at 9:54 PM #

Until they say otherwise I will live in my own world where Lo and CJL and Warren return

  23. vtpackfan 03/18/2013 at 10:41 PM #

We only know for certain that this is the last “one shining moment” for Rich and Scott. I personally think it is 99% green light for Zo based on his Prep year @ Hargrave and some comments about actually wanting to make the jump but not having a lot of info and paperwork until late. TJW is the least likely because, even in a projected deeper draft next year, he could really solidify a lottery or near lottery spot with another years work.

CJ is a real wild card. Some have suggested he could stay to finally put the pieces together and take it to a potential higher level. I don’t really buy that. He plays everything very close and an enigma in ways both on and off the court. I could honestly see him finishing school and coming back because he really does love College BBall and playing it in his backyard. I think we’ve always just assumed that he’s all about himself and a ticket to stardom, but I don’t honestly think anyone really knows CJs thoughts and motivation besides him, his Mom and Gottfried. I’d say he is leaning but no way a sure goner after the tourney run.

  24. Mike 03/18/2013 at 11:41 PM #

Rick, I beg to differ. We CANNOT lose BOTH games. 🙂

  25. MrPlywood 03/19/2013 at 2:51 AM #

Since I already posted that State would play 3 in the ACCT (correct) and play at least 2 in the NCAAT, I will reiterate that since State will have a week to prep for and focus on Temple they will win that one. I will reserve the right to make a prediction for game 2 if in fact the Pack gets that far – the team shouldn’t look ahead so I won’t either. 🙂
