NCAA Tournament: NC State vs Temple in Dayton on Friday at 1:40pm on TBS (7:05pm update)

2013 NCAA Tournament vs Temple

NC State received the East Region’s 8th seed in the East Region and will play Temple in Dayton, Ohio on Friday. With a win, the Wolfpack would most likely play #1 seeded Indiana on Sunday.

The 24-10 Wolfpack finished #33 in the RPI and was generally projected by most ‘Bracketologists’ to land on the eight line. The committee SAYS that they try to adjust bids and seeding for key injuries through the season. It is hard to imagine that NC State received such consideration for Lorenzo Brown’s injury this year. The Wolfpack was 24-7 for the year with our starting point guard and finished the season 8-3 after Brown returned from injury.

Miami, who defeated NC State in the ACC Tournament semi-finals yesterday, claimed the #2 seed in the same South region as the Wolfpack. The Hurricanes become the first team in ACC history to win the the regular season out-right and claim the ACC Tournament Championship and NOT get a #1 seed in NCAA Tournament. With the Canes getting slotted to play in the East I have to wonder why NC State wasn’t sent to the West to play opposite Gonzaga?

In other news of interest to NC State and Atlantic Coast Conference fans:

  • Duke’s #2 seed in the Midwest Region challenges a lot of rationale. The Blue Devils finished the season as the #1 rated team in the RPI, yet were selected to be in the same region as the #1 overall seed (Louisville). That would intimate that the #1 RPI translated into a #8 overall seed. But, the NCAA insists they don’t use an ‘S-curve’ methodology and that seeding is almost more like slotting — done by location.

  • North Carolina gets an 8 seed in the South Region and will play Villanova on Friday. With a win, the Tar Heels will probably play Roy Williams’ former school, Kansas. The Jayhawks knocked both the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels out of the last year’s NCAA Tournament.

  • If the NCAA did our local schools any favor it is that they scheduled State, Duke and Carolina to all play on a Friday and Sunday cadence. If all three Triangle teams win on Thursday then this area is going to be CRAZY on Sunday!!

  • Virginia and Maryland both fell short in their quest to make the Tournament – leaving only four ACC teams in this year’s tournament. Making it even more interesting that NC State and Miami are in the same bracket.

  • At the end of the day, I think it is fair to draw the conclusion that the ACC really got screwed at every turn this year. If Billy Packer was still working for CBS I could guarantee you that we’d at least get some of these ACC-centric questions asked this evening.

  • I must’ve been too deep in typing — someone please point me to Arizona State’s seed? #sarcasm

  • SFN will do our best to get interviews with Kentucky’s Ryan Harrow and Old Dominion’s Deshawn Painter to discus their NCAA plans this year.
  • Our game against Temple is scheduled to play Friday at 1:40 pm EDT on TBS.

We hung with Kansas just fine. We lost that game on the boards… just like so many others this year.

We were a better team at the end of last year than we are this year though.

Any kind of foul trouble against IU and we are toast.

re: “all the jizzing over making the tourney two years in a row.” – Not sure where that’s coming from. Most here seem to view it as an underachievement considering the 8 seed.

re: “Knowing our mentally fragile team we’ll be looking ahead to the Hoosiers and get blasted by Temple.” I guess they might as well not get on the bus so they don’t disappoint the peeps who didn’t think they’d get by VT.

Overall its a match-up of the No. 35 and No. 68 teams in Pomeroy. State should be favored by a little in this matchup.

    From their official website:

Temple is (23-9) are under the direction of seventh-year head coach Fran Dunphy, who is making his 15th NCAA Tournament trip (6 at Temple). The Owls, led by senior and A-10 Player of the Year Khalif Wyatt, enter the tournament winners of 10 out of their last 12 contests.

Wyatt, the A-10 Player of the Year, leads the A-10 in scoring with a 19.8 average while ranking seventh in the conference in assists (4.1 apg.). Wyatt also ranks ninth in the A-10 in steals (1.6 spg) and seventh in free-throw percentage (.832).

Wyatt is one of five players in their final season of eligibility on a veteran Owl team. Seniors Scootie Randall (11.8 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) and Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson (8.9ppg., 6.2 rpg., 3.5 apg., 1.8 spg.) are staples in the Cherry and White starting five while graduate students Jake O’Brien (9.3 ppg., .429 three-point percentage) and T.J. DiLeo (3.0 ppg., 1.9 rpg.) are the top reserves.

Sophomores Anthony Lee (10.0 ppg., 7.0 rpg.) and Will Cummings (6.1 ppg., 1.4 spg.) fill out the starting rotation.

Austin Johnson on Twitter: Only teams in the ACC with worse defenses this year than Temple: Virginia Tech, Boston College, Florida State

We would be motivated against IU. Loss to them last year should have been a learning session that would be applied in a rematch. IU not strong nor athletic inside. Hulls is no athlete and if guarded really can’t get shot off. If NCSU plays up to ability, would definitely not discount vs the Hoosiers.

We just need to focus, play D, come together, play to our ability, and develop momentum vs Temple.

Temple is a poor defensive team. Be efficient with the ball, distribute to find the weak spot and put the rock in the twine. And play hellish defense.

Terrible draw for us. We can win this one, but we’re going to have to play a style of game we don’t like.

In Temple, I think we’re facing another Oklahoma State. In the unlikely event we do win, I doubt we’ll win Sunday against maybe the 2nd-best team in the tourney.

As for the ACC, why do we have to have all 4 ACC teams playing on the same day? An extra day of rest is good, but fans can’t watch but one game at a time, and there could be 2 or even 3 ACC games on at the same time. And why all 4 ACC teams in only 2 different regions?

Many of you are high on Miami right now. I’m not. I saw a ‘Canes team that did not handle pressure well in the ACCT, from two #8 NCAAT seeds, and that won’t bode well later on when they face really strong defensive competition. I don’t see the U making it to Atlanta; they may not even get to the 16.

I think that maybe everybody who got in deserved to be in; maybe Iowa should have since they were playing a much more difficult schedule than say a Middle Tennessee State. My big complaint with this tourney on a year-to-year basis is sending untested at-large teams to Dayton while teams like Maryland sit home. Does anyone really believe that some of the at-large teams playing early next week in Dayton could beat all of the Big 4 teams, including Duke twice?

I didn’t understand why the #1 seed and the #5 seeds in the entire field (Louisville and Duke) are in the same region. I think CBS is controlling most of these selections when I see, again, Roy Williams beside Kansas in the brackets.

I’m puzzled by why Oregon and Mississippi, who won major conference tourney titles, get only a #12 seed, especially Oregon, who was already considered “in” before the Pac-12 Tourney even began. I know the Pac-12 is weak, but a #12? That’s at the end of the bubble. This Oregon team is probably the best #12 seed I’ve seen in a long time, and their Oklahoma State game in the first round will be more like a 3rd round game.

All in all, it should be interesting, but I’ll be surprised if Louisville, Indiana, Gonzaga and Kansas aren’t your Final Four. The Zags aren’t that good, but when you’ve got your ESPN panel agreeing that New Mexico will win that region, that doesn’t say much for the level of competition out West.

It just isn’t going to be a good March for ACC fans.

The seeding and draw for the Pack is a direct result of WTF games during the regular season. Is it deserved? Probably. Can the Pack win? I think yes but not with the half hearted efforts we have seen in some games. Lack of defense? Over the season yes but over the last 10 games maybe not. The bed was made now time to surprise some.

When we are on top of our game, and things are clicking, we can beat anybody. I could swear I have heard that by several comments on here. So that means we can beat IU, if we do the aforementioned. But of course forget IU right now, and focus on defeating Temple. Go Pack. I believe you can.

Make the dadgummed FreeFrows. Yes, they’re gonna foul the hell out of us, who doesn’t? Make these FTs and run up the score.

Keep Scott Wood hot from deep. Dude’s on fire.

The more I think about it I would be a nervous wreck if I were the Hoosiers & looking at a possible game vs NCST – DANGER #dickievpicks

I like Miami because they are a veteran team, with a coach that has shown he knows how not to screw it up (George Mason). They have a swagger. They have two very good guards that can light it up, and Larkin can dish it out with the best of them. They can bombs away from outside, grab offensive rebounds, and they make their free throws. I think Miami coasts to the Sweet 16 and likely faces Marquette. I mean, not a bad draw. This is a very good Hurricane team that will do some serious damage in this tournament. They’ve shown they are not a fluke and can win big games.

“The more I think about it I would be a nervous wreck if I were the Hoosiers & looking at a possible game vs NCST”

Wouldn’t it be funny if Indiana was caught looking ahead?

I took a look up and down their roster and I’m gonna have to go with this guy to have a career night against us:

I don’t get why people think Indiana is such a tough matchup for us. We played them last year in just the 7th game of the Gottfried era. We led the game with 4 1/2 minutes left, and we were within 1 point with less than 2 minutes left.

I realize both teams are different now, but there is no reason to believe we can’t play with them. They’ve gotta guard us too, pal!

The great thing about the big dance is you just don’t know. Watch tonight at 9 and you will see you never know when the magic will happen. At least we are in a positin for the magic to happen.

  20. Texpack 03/17/2013 at 8:49 PM #

Lace ’em up and play. We can beat ANYBODY when we play our game.

  21. triadwolf 03/17/2013 at 8:50 PM #

There are more teams in this tournament wary of playing us than the other way around. We are a difficult team to prepare for, especially if they don’t know much about us.

We’ll have to play well in order to advance past Sunday, but it’s not like it’s overwhelming odds. And those that think we were playing so much better last year at this time, other than the FSU loss, we are playing pretty damn well compared to last year. We spotted the conference champion (who should be a #1 seed) about 15 points and made a pretty darn good game of it.

Yes, you have to be in it to win it. No matter how disappointed anyone might be in the body of work so far, they did accomplish getting to the starting line.

Ok…. for those worried about IU…. I don’t see where changing our seeding to 7 or 9 makes any real difference in the strength of our opponent….the other choices being… Louisville, Kansas, Duke, Georgetown,Miami,Ohio State or Gonzaga….

Personally…. I would rather play IU instead of the others…. we have a ‘history/connection’ with that school… and should not have any problems with motivation or concentration… especially our senior leader Mr. Wood.

That said, we all know, that there is almost always one team out of every four…. that does not show up for the dance… each weekend during the Tournament… so maybe that’s Temple or IU or maybe it’s us…. who knows ??

I bet old Uncle Roy is WTF ‘pissed’ … Kansas in game 2 ???

And Coach Rat, on the other hand, is smiling…. on paper the first real tough game for his Dookies is Michigan State in S16…

So… this could be a lot worse….and not a whole lot better .. all things considered….

    ———————-

I was proud of our team this past weekend . I saw real signs that our chemistry problems, for the most part, have been resolved…. I’m blaming the Miami game loss on Zo hurting his hand … doing stupid S&%t he shouldn’t been doing… nothing else.

Both Zo and CALVIN will be WEARING RED again next season…. so don’t worry about that too much.

That will be reflected in how both prepare and perform for the remainder of this season.

    Kids will be kids….
