NCAA Tournament: NC State vs Temple in Dayton on Friday at 1:40pm on TBS (7:05pm update)

2013 NCAA Tournament vs Temple

NC State received the East Region’s 8th seed in the East Region and will play Temple in Dayton, Ohio on Friday. With a win, the Wolfpack would most likely play #1 seeded Indiana on Sunday.

The 24-10 Wolfpack finished #33 in the RPI and was generally projected by most ‘Bracketologists’ to land on the eight line. The committee SAYS that they try to adjust bids and seeding for key injuries through the season. It is hard to imagine that NC State received such consideration for Lorenzo Brown’s injury this year. The Wolfpack was 24-7 for the year with our starting point guard and finished the season 8-3 after Brown returned from injury.

Miami, who defeated NC State in the ACC Tournament semi-finals yesterday, claimed the #2 seed in the same South region as the Wolfpack. The Hurricanes become the first team in ACC history to win the the regular season out-right and claim the ACC Tournament Championship and NOT get a #1 seed in NCAA Tournament. With the Canes getting slotted to play in the East I have to wonder why NC State wasn’t sent to the West to play opposite Gonzaga?

In other news of interest to NC State and Atlantic Coast Conference fans:

  • Duke’s #2 seed in the Midwest Region challenges a lot of rationale. The Blue Devils finished the season as the #1 rated team in the RPI, yet were selected to be in the same region as the #1 overall seed (Louisville). That would intimate that the #1 RPI translated into a #8 overall seed. But, the NCAA insists they don’t use an ‘S-curve’ methodology and that seeding is almost more like slotting — done by location.

  • North Carolina gets an 8 seed in the South Region and will play Villanova on Friday. With a win, the Tar Heels will probably play Roy Williams’ former school, Kansas. The Jayhawks knocked both the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels out of the last year’s NCAA Tournament.

  • If the NCAA did our local schools any favor it is that they scheduled State, Duke and Carolina to all play on a Friday and Sunday cadence. If all three Triangle teams win on Thursday then this area is going to be CRAZY on Sunday!!

  • Virginia and Maryland both fell short in their quest to make the Tournament – leaving only four ACC teams in this year’s tournament. Making it even more interesting that NC State and Miami are in the same bracket.

  • At the end of the day, I think it is fair to draw the conclusion that the ACC really got screwed at every turn this year. If Billy Packer was still working for CBS I could guarantee you that we’d at least get some of these ACC-centric questions asked this evening.

  • I must’ve been too deep in typing — someone please point me to Arizona State’s seed? #sarcasm

  • SFN will do our best to get interviews with Kentucky’s Ryan Harrow and Old Dominion’s Deshawn Painter to discus their NCAA plans this year.
  • Our game against Temple is scheduled to play Friday at 1:40 pm EDT on TBS.

Well, it’s going to be a fight just to beat Temple. Hopefully we don’t have 20 unforced turnovers trying to “feature” CJL.

  2. TheAliasTroll 03/17/2013 at 6:55 PM #

“Alias.. we played sloppy last year and should have beaten them…not disagreeing, but it says a lot doesn’t it.”

    I’m talking about this year.

The Terps or Cavs have no business being in this thing. They weren’t even close. Minnesota is a good club and faired well in the best conference in the land. The ACC has really declined. Good thing we add four very solid Big East programs.

News Flash: Seth Davis is a tool

Maybe State can borrow Wisconsin’s uniforms?

I don’t see a big deal with the seed we got. Doesn’t matter which region our 2nd game will be against the best (that’s assuming we get past the first round – Temple).

That being said I would love UNC to meet UCLA! Larry Drew has become an awesome player at UCLA and I would bet he would put on a show (in many ways) if they were to meet.

  6. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 6:59 PM #

I’m not arguing with our seed, but both Miami and Duke should have some beef. They could each be a number 1 and Gonzaga plays in a very poor conference. UNC as an 8 just doesn’t seem right. Most had them as a 6.

We have a shot at it but there can be no more lapses. No more slow starts. No more AWOL players. There are no warm-ups.

4 in the show, huh? Wait til Ole Johnny hears about this! When are the “powers that be” gonna figure out how “Ole Johnny’s corruptness” has screwed up all!

Karl Hess will not help you there, Johnny!!

Wulf, I’m not really shocked…we’ve sunk to the pits, but we’re too close to acknowledge it..

What’s the thinking on ZO and CJ for next year?

  9. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 7:01 PM #

With such a weak NBA daft they are both gone.

  10. MrPlywood 03/17/2013 at 7:02 PM #

Indiana is 3-3 over their last 6. The first step though is BEAT TEMPLE!

  11. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 7:03 PM #

And I just saw the update, and that is a complete cheap shot at Painter, SFN. Show some class.

Beej , regardless of what is further said, I’m squarely in your court of thinking.

No doubt about about it, if ya draw the 8/9, State has the best possible scenario to imagine.

If they bear down v. Temple, they face a team that they shoulda beat last year.

  13. MrPlywood 03/17/2013 at 7:11 PM #

re: State and Miami in the same bracket… If the Pack gets that far I will consider that a huge achievement, so NBD. But I do see the logic of separating the 4 teams from the ACC.

  14. packalum44 03/17/2013 at 7:15 PM #

I was all pissed about our seeding (not surprised just pissed we underachieved this year) until I looked at the 2-4 seeds. Guys this tournament has parity. There is not a whole lot of difference in the top 20 teams.

We were 2 point dogs against Miami (who I think will win it all).

We might be 4.5 point dogs IF we play Indiana. That’s not a huge upset.

I have less faith in the mid-majors. They don’t play tough teams day/in and day/out and when they upset major OCC teams alot has to do with the OCC team not taking them seriously.

I think Shane Larkin is going pro too!! Am I crazy to think he’s a first round pick??? He’s as good as Zo due to having a quicker first step, much better shot and being smarter.

Zo is as better passer, slasher, finisher and rebounder. But being able to shoot is pretty damn important!!

  16. packalum44 03/17/2013 at 7:20 PM #

Painter really screwed us and himself by transferring (his grandmother passed away before school started).

Awww if we could go back and do it over life would be grand.

  17. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 7:22 PM #

Larkin is only 5-11. Zo is 6-5. Though Zo would do well to learn some tricks from Larkin. He had the much better year. I think Larkin comes back and averages 30 a game for a 4 win team.

We made the NCAA tournament two years in a row. Wow!! That is a massive accomplishment in and of itself. Regardless of what transpires for this team, things are looking up.

  19. TheAliasTroll 03/17/2013 at 7:26 PM #

If we’re 4.5 point dogs IF we play Indiana I’m putting a mortgage payment on Indiana.

  20. Tau837 03/17/2013 at 7:29 PM #

I wish we had earned a better seed, but we didn’t deserve one. We earned that 8 seed.

Given that was our seed, I love our draw. I’m not particularly concerned about Temple. We played three common opponents:

    1. State went 1-1 vs. Duke; Duke crushed Temple by 23 points on a neutral floor.
    2. State beat UMass by 18 on a neutral floor; Temple won at UMass by 1 point then lost by 5 points to UMass in the Atlantic 10 tournament.
    3. State beat St. Bonaventure by 19; Temple lost to St. Bonaventure at home by 3 points.

Obviously, we all know that our team can lose any game, but if they come ready to play, they should make it to Sunday.

And I like the matchup against Indiana. As others have said, sooner or later we would have to beat a great team to advance. Might as well face that challenge in the second round, and better against Indiana than Louisville or Kansas.

  21. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 7:30 PM #

Zeller is a matchup nightmare for us. Rich is strong enough but not near tall enough. Leslie will get abused all night long as Zeller has a stroke. Remember Kansas last year? Our bigs just couldn’t hang. Perhaps we can get him into some quick foul trouble. And Oladipo is a lock down defender that could take Brown or Wood.

  22. eas 03/17/2013 at 7:34 PM #

I’m with tuckerdorm1983! 2 years in a row in the big dance. No matter how frustrating this season was we are finally moving back in the right direction. Maybe Gott can only recruit and not coach or whatever…..he is still the BEST we have had since V! I for one am happy for our program and school. Am I frustrated at the season? Yes but only because we had a heck of good team that didn’t do all they should have. However, they did more than what we have seen in Raleigh in many years.

    Go deep Pack, go deep.

  23. TheAliasTroll 03/17/2013 at 7:40 PM #

I’m sorry, but who is going to guard Oladipo? Scott Wood? I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. Going to be a banner day for Victor. Leslie, our “featured super star”, will be completely shut down and embarrased by Zeller and we all know it. It’s a piss poor match up for us playing Indiana. We don’t hold any advantage up and down the roster.

Knowing our mentally fragile team we’ll be looking ahead to the Hoosiers and get blasted by Temple.

  24. Rochester 03/17/2013 at 7:43 PM #

Don’t get all the jizzing over making the tourney two years in a row. We made it 5 straight under Voldemort and that wasn’t really where we needed to be. We need to win, not just be in.

  25. T-Pack 03/17/2013 at 7:43 PM #

Geez … Can’t believe all the panty-wadding and negativism here about our seeding! We got what we earned and now have an opportunity to do something BIG! Step 1: Focus entirely on beating Temple, with NO thoughts of Sunday. Step 2: Hit the floor Sunday believing we can play with AND beat ANYBODY. Favorites who were thrilled with their seedings go down every year. Be the man by beating the man. Wooooooo.
