Miami 81 – NCSU 71 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals

It wasn’t in the cards from the opening tip for the Wolfpack today, as the Miami Hurricanes defeated the Wolfpack 81-71 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals in Greensboro. State got off to a very sluggish start — not getting off of the blocks scoring-wise until 5:25 had ticked off of the clock — and they never fully recovered from that initial drought. That was probably due to having a short bench and their third game in as many days, as the Pack looked like a group with tired legs playing against a top ten team looking to grab its first ACC hoops title.

While there are no real moral victories in tournament play, State has little to be ashamed of in this game today. Their mental intensity was there, the defensive effort was not lacking, and they did win the second half 42-40. In fact, the Wolfpack trimmed the Miami lead down to six midway through the second stanza, but just didn’t have the air to climb up the last bit of the mountain the first half left them to climb. In that woeful first twenty minutes, State missed its first five shots from the field, and committed three turnovers. Their first points came at the 14:35 mark when senior Richard Howell finally put the ball in the net, but by then Miami was almost at full sail and the Pack could never quite track them down.

Credit Miami’s defensive plan, as CJ Leslie was stymied much of the game by the Hurricanes, and by their own rebounding intensity. Miami is a team with great size, depth and speed, and it seemed like every Wolfpack parry was answered with a flurry of Hurricane baskets that put to rest the question of who’d be playing on Sunday for the ACC Championship. Durand Scott of the Hurricanes was the ‘Canes MVP, tossing in 32 points and making 5 of his 8 attempts from beyond the three point arc. Shane Larkin also had a decent day against State, canning 23 points, mostly from the free throw line.

For State, it’s now up to the NCAA Selection Committee as to where and who their next game will be. The Wolfpack is a certain at-large pick, but their seeding is very much in question — some have them as high as a ten seed in the Field of 64, while other prognosticators see NC State as a 7th or 8th seed in their Regional brackets. That position will leave the Pack with a gargantuan task if it wants to earn a Final Four berth. No matter what, however, to get to Atlanta, one will have to defeat the big dogs in the Dance sooner or later, and for State, that task may be at hand as soon as the weekend should it win its first round game.

Considering where we were to this day 2 years ago I am giddy!

For perspective – Turgeon was hired at UMD the same year as Gott, and they may be 0-2 for NCAAs, rebuilding a team that record-wise was better than State’s when he started (and had Len signed – whom G. Williams locked up)

I really agree on Painters impact – physical games against big teams like Miami give us trouble and he would really help.

Question to all is which 1 or 2 seed would u rather face?

Last point – re: UNC fans’ distaste for Hess – if u think we complain about refs talk to any good UNC fan – they know all their names, tendencies, and how they call it vs UNC.

Regarding foul shooting and practicing…What’s important is practicing the RIGHT way.

You want muscle memory AND good form. If you shoot 500 foul shots simply going through the motions – you do yourself no good. You’re much better off shooting a fewer number and working on form/routine.

You can develop the muscle memory through repetition – but like hitting a golf ball on the driving range – you won’t have that repition during the game. That’s why it’s critical that every shot you take you focus on the details of your routine – and that your routines reinforce solid fundamentals (alignment of the body, focal points, position of hands on the basketball, breathing, etc.)

My overall impression is that this level of detail isn’t required from the staff – but I may be off – I have no idea. But one of my observations from the red/white game was that alot of our shooters had (what I consider) very lazy form.

Regarding our seeding – we can be as high as a 6 (I’ll be thrilled if we get this seeding) – and as a low as a 9. At this point, I’m guessing we’re an 8 or 7 based on our RPI.

Hopefully, we’ll be playing this time next week. The first round game won’t be a gimme….and we’ll be underdogs in our second game. I don’t see us fairing too well against any of the 1 seeds, but we can handle most of the 2s.

Just some food for thought. We lost in the semis last year, and look what we did. Maybe we can do it again. However I must say that since Gott has been coach, we have again been able to enjoy basketball. 2 years, 2 NCAA appearances. Don’t recall any under the last coach.

By the way, I’ve seen a lot of people saying “it was the third game. If we’d had the bye, we would have just gotten tired in the championship game.” That may be true, but there’s a significant difference between both teams having played 3 games in 3 days and one team having played 3 and the other having played 2. In the former, you aren’t going to notice the fatigue as much because both teams are tired. In the latter, such as yesterday’s game, it’s usually going to be pretty clear who the fresher team is.

Looking at the RPIs and resumes of the 7 and 8 seeds I can see why we are an 8. We could maybe take a 7 seed from Creighton or Memphis. Wake Forest loss was really bad for us (+150 RPI).

I am expecting the 8 seed – so a tough first round and then maybe Indiana, Gonzaga, Lousville or maybe Kansas second rd. It will be entertaining – and really stinks for theses teams too.

I kinda like the revenge story against KU – they are all good, all top seeds for a reason.

Not sure I agree that our defensive effort was great. Was at the game and said 4-5 times, someone guard Durand Scott. He made open shots to his credit, but he was not defended well at all. All that said, we should get a 7 seed IMO. If for no reason other than playing a 1 in the 2nd round would be borderline unfair to the 1. They normally get 2 fairly easy games and I think even the committee will recognize that State will not be an easy out. If we do get a 1, let’s hope for Gonzaga or Kansas. I think we out talent the Zags and Kansas we got some revenge at stake.

Forgot today is Saint Patty’s Day. So green is the color of the day. Go Canes. Can’t bear the thought of hearing the holes talk smack. Come on Miami! Crush the holes!

Have to agree with that mak4dpak….as distasteful as it is I have to pull for Miami today.
Also just noticed this quote from Zo and it really bothers me that after all this time this team still is doing this.

‘We didn’t come out with the energy we expected, but that happens all the time. We just have to get through it.’

  9. Wulfpack 03/17/2013 at 11:48 AM #

    Yes, Go Canes.

Our perimeter defense has struggled for much of the year. Scott made some shots that were virtually unguardable, but he also got some very easy ones off the drive. And Larkin had his way with us, too. That kid has really improved his game.

As far as potential match ups, I want no part of Louisville. Indiana or Gonzaga would be a better draw if we are an 8 or 9. If we are a 7, then we could see Kansas, Ohio State or Georgetown. Would rather not see the Hoyas, and Kansas would be very tough, too.

I get the just of your point of it- a solid argument.

I would counter argue that this year if we had a bye-next year- any year we play 3 games in 3 days with Gott will play out the same. With Harrick retired we are the only team in America that plays with a 6 and a half/ 7 man rotation. We would have to play from Friday and catch a team from Thursday to ever stand much a chance. It would still be a pick ’em game since “said team” would obviously have a deep bench to have made it that far.

I’m cool with it for the Regular season or NCAA, but ACC Tourneys and Vacation Invitalionals to kick off the year are House Money after the second (see Puerto Rico versus Okie State).

There’s no more beautiful sight than a Tar Heel crowd about to start crying.

I think you’re drawing an awfully large conclusion from very little data. I’m not convinced a 7 man rotation is a death sentence in a 3 day tournament. There are plenty of teams over the years who have been successful with short rotations. Also, we are far from the only team that plays a short bench. In fact, if you look only in the top 10, Kansas and Ohio State play a very short bench and Michigan is a 6.5/7 man rotation just like us.

I also don’t think we can conclude that this is Gott’s preferred rotation. I think he played this rotation because this was the roster he had. If you look back at his Alabama teams, you don’t see a short bench as a trend.

    08-09) Players who averaged 10+ MPG: 11
Players who averaged 15+ MPG: 9
    07-08) 10+: 10, 15+: 6
    06-07) 10+: 8, 15+: 6
    05-06) 10+: 9, 15+: 9
    04-05) 10+: 7, 15+: 5

I’m not going to list all of them out, but I hardly see any cause for concern yet. I see no reason we should conclude that Gott is always going to play a 7 man rotation.

And again, what else exactly would you have had him do this season? We had 7 serviceable players on the roster, that’s all. He coached the roster he had.

I cannot figure out this team, I won’t be surprised if they lose in the opening round, nor will I be surprised if they make the final eight. However, the continuing poor FT shooting (14-25 today), and the constant second chance points surrendered, lead me to belive it will be a very short visit to the NCAA’s. One has to wonder why this team is so pathetic at the foul line, it is embarrassing. Time to turn my attention to football, so I can become even more frustrated.

Same old story…..free throws and turnovers! Also, neither CJ nor Brown seem to dominate when it counts. Didn’t look like they were looking to get Woods open at times. Maybe they were trying to spread things out for CJ and RH. Anyway, only two quality wins and 5 losses that should not have happened with the leagues leading 3 point shooter, leading rebounder, steals and assists and…..5 guys scoring in double figures. I remember the early season articles about NCSU basketball being relevant. Makes you wonder about net year. TJ will have to really pick it up on the boards next year. How many times did we just give them the ball yesterday or force the turnover and not execute on the other end. Sometimes Brown looked lost.
