Miami 81 – NCSU 71 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals

It wasn’t in the cards from the opening tip for the Wolfpack today, as the Miami Hurricanes defeated the Wolfpack 81-71 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals in Greensboro. State got off to a very sluggish start — not getting off of the blocks scoring-wise until 5:25 had ticked off of the clock — and they never fully recovered from that initial drought. That was probably due to having a short bench and their third game in as many days, as the Pack looked like a group with tired legs playing against a top ten team looking to grab its first ACC hoops title.

While there are no real moral victories in tournament play, State has little to be ashamed of in this game today. Their mental intensity was there, the defensive effort was not lacking, and they did win the second half 42-40. In fact, the Wolfpack trimmed the Miami lead down to six midway through the second stanza, but just didn’t have the air to climb up the last bit of the mountain the first half left them to climb. In that woeful first twenty minutes, State missed its first five shots from the field, and committed three turnovers. Their first points came at the 14:35 mark when senior Richard Howell finally put the ball in the net, but by then Miami was almost at full sail and the Pack could never quite track them down.

Credit Miami’s defensive plan, as CJ Leslie was stymied much of the game by the Hurricanes, and by their own rebounding intensity. Miami is a team with great size, depth and speed, and it seemed like every Wolfpack parry was answered with a flurry of Hurricane baskets that put to rest the question of who’d be playing on Sunday for the ACC Championship. Durand Scott of the Hurricanes was the ‘Canes MVP, tossing in 32 points and making 5 of his 8 attempts from beyond the three point arc. Shane Larkin also had a decent day against State, canning 23 points, mostly from the free throw line.

For State, it’s now up to the NCAA Selection Committee as to where and who their next game will be. The Wolfpack is a certain at-large pick, but their seeding is very much in question — some have them as high as a ten seed in the Field of 64, while other prognosticators see NC State as a 7th or 8th seed in their Regional brackets. That position will leave the Pack with a gargantuan task if it wants to earn a Final Four berth. No matter what, however, to get to Atlanta, one will have to defeat the big dogs in the Dance sooner or later, and for State, that task may be at hand as soon as the weekend should it win its first round game.

Good riddance, Terps. What an awful fanbase they are.

Canes over Heels for the clean sweep. Regular season title and ACC Tourney title.

Can’t believe that shot by UMd out of the timeout with 10 secs still on the clock. That was just sad.

Much as this pains me to say this…go Canes.

That last 3-attempt for Maryland seemed very Herb-esque.

A 30-footer with still eight seconds on the clock?

Ouch. I thought we had a real shot at advancing to the finals.

Poor execution/turnovers and FT shooting seem to be our Achilles heel. It did not help to have little of Calvin in the 1st part of the game.

@61packer – right before that Lo charge call, Gott told him to take the ball to the rim. On the previous drive Lo dished and State lost the ball. Howell also got called for a charge with minimal contact, while Gamble was allowed to back Woods to the floor. Twice I think. Erm.

The guys kept playing though. And they still had a chance despite the self-inflicted horrible start but they were playing uphill all day.

So even if we had a bye we still had 3 games to play if we win, and this was number 3. We were very sluggish, and lacked the intensity to win the game, most of the game. More hero ball by Leslie, and not enough of players off the bench to give the starters some rest, and for God’s sake we gotta make FTS, especially when the game is on the line. They made most all of their’s. As for Gott, no blame on him, the guys should know by now what is expected of them, and they have to produce. I certainly don’t want Lowe back. So now it is on to the NCAAs, and hopefully a deep run, without consecutive games.

    guessing game begins:
    are we an NCAA 8/9/10?
if you choose 7 and win…bonus points.
choose 11 and get bonus points as well.

I think MG looks like a very good tourney coach. Better than regular season (like V). After we have had a bigger sample size, we will cut down the nets at some point.

We played with great heart all weekend and I am very excited for the big dance to start.

You need to remember I was right in 24 hours when our 6 seed is unveiled.

I would clearly bet up to $1K that we are no worse than a 7. That’s lunacy.

I don’t mind playing a 1 or 2 on the first weekend. Nobody is scary good out there this year. No one.

I’m thinking anywhere between seeds 6-9 on Sunday. If we’re a 6, we’re probably traveling to the west.

    agreed with vtp.
    NObody is great.
    lots of good.
    no great.

  14. Wufpacker 03/16/2013 at 6:12 PM #

Yup. There’s probably about 15-20 teams that could take it if they get hot at the right time.

And yes, I include us in that number.

    ILP 6 seed possibility?
    i like it. the cookies
    might crumble our way.

  16. ILPackfan 03/16/2013 at 6:19 PM #

@ john – Might be optimistic, but what the heck. 24 wins + RPI and SOS might be enough to convince the committee. If I were betting, I’d probably call 7.

  17. BJD95 03/16/2013 at 6:25 PM #

No black marks on resume (compared to other candidates), high major with mid-20s RPI. How that translates to 8 or worse is baffling to me.

We will be 6 or 7.

Am I paranoid, or does someone on the opposing team seem to frequently have a career game against us. Was it last year that the Miami quarterback set a conference record for passing yardage in a game?

  19. Pack78 03/16/2013 at 6:49 PM #

    Lucky #7…sets up a game with a 10 seed, followed (hopefully) by a matchup with a 2.

I feel good. We played hard against a very good basketball team. Truth be told, we lost this game last week against FSU, but there’s no sense going down the woulda, coulda, shoulda road.

We’re 8-3 since Zo came back. I wouldn’t call that peaking exactly, but there’s only one unexpected loss in those three. We are well-positioned to make a deep run in the NCAAs. We’ll profit from the rest day they give us. It’s a year when anybody can beat anybody.

I have no problem cheering for the Canes tomorrow. They’re well-coached, mature and they thumped UNX and Dook. Hard. I appreciate that.

Apologies, that was Smokey, not Walter’s line. Regardless, State gets the 8 seed tomorrow.
