MD/UVA Special Edition LiveBlog

An e-mail from one of my very favorite Wolfpackers got me thinking. How will NC State react to yesterday’s lost sumo wrestling match?

I think it all depends on today. A Terp win, and we can sell it as a reprieve, a second chance with a more favorable ACCT seed than if we had won. I think we could easily make the finals, and then the Elite Eight.

A Cavs win, and I could see yesterday breaking us. We lose on Thursday to a VPI team that apparently matches up well with us, and land in the 8/9 “ejector seat” game. No reason to make any plans for the second weekend of the dance, then.

Thus, this special edition live blog.

5:55 – Michigan’s uniforms are beyond “fashion risk” territory. The Oregon football program would be embarrassed to wear that.

5:57 – Michigan and Indiana are classic consistent, limited-ceiling teams. The second they play someone having a hot night, they won’t be able to keep up and their dance will end.

5:59 – Then again, such “insight” may explain why I’ve never won my office pool. YMMV.

6:00 – In an effort to f-ck with the ghost of Thomas Jefferson, I hear that Mark Turgeon will dress up as Alexander Hamilton. Look it up, non-history dorks.

6:03 – Natili made it up to Hooville so he can screw us over some more. Just dandy.

6:04 – Gonna watch the end of IU/Meechigan, I don’t think anyone is paying attention anyway.

6:08 – Not looking good for Tom Crean’s bunch. They may need to win the B1G tourney to keep a 1 seed (and they probably will). Meeechigan should lock up a 2.

6:13 – Maryland trapping a little bit. Effectively.

6:14 – 14-6! So far, both I and AH are pleased.

6:17 – In other news – Meeechigan chokes their 1-and-1s, and loses by a point. IU can now take the conference tourney off if they want.

6:18 – 18-6 at the second media TO. So far, the back door is delightfully wide open.

6:23 – UVA going with their own version of the dreaded three honky alignment.

6:25 – Nick Faust loves playing on the Sabbath. Insert your own joke.

6:26 – 25-8, Faust with THIRTEEN. Spchinters tightening across the Commonwealth.

6:30 – UVA starting to make a little run, with their superior size. BTW, a Terp win would likely mean they just need 1 upset in the ACCT, not two. But they get Duke on Friday regardless. Tall order.

6:33 – Hoos really struggling with MD’s athleticism. But turtles have gone very cold.

6:37 – Still, it’s 29-14 at the last media timeout. This next stretch will be crucial.

6:41 – Somebody set up a PayPal account so we can chip in and send Mark Turgeon a fruit basket.

6:42 – If MD was shooting better, they’d be up thirty.

Halftime – Maryland 32, Virginia 19. Bad last 10 seconds for Maryland, and the Hoos have momentum. It’s never easy for a Pack fan, that’s for damned sure.

7:05 – Lead now down to 11. Gulp.

7:06 – Zebras making late, weak calls to keep UVA in it. And MD is getting tight as a result. Down to TEN.

7:08 – Every call going UVA’s way. Blech.

7:10 – Yet ANOTHER late whistle. Ridiculous. As an aside, you have to expect a guy named “Truck” to be a super shitty free throw shooter. And he is.

7:11 – Maryland is going to lose this game.

7:12 – Refs miss two BLATANT Cavalier fouls, and Luckie Ts somebody up. Nowhere near an evenly called game. Touch fouls on MD whistled, clear hacks on UVA…play on.

7:16 – Refs are absolutely swinging this game. Single handedly.

7:18 – Alex Len really has regressed. Looked like he would be an impact player.

7:20 – This crew is a “Who’s Who” of garbage officials. Everyone but Herr Hess.

7:23 – Time to find Nick Faust again. He’s totally disappeared.

7:25 – Down to six. You know what will happen from here.

7:27 – Sparty beating NW, in completely irrelevant news. Carmody is getting fired very soon.

7:28 – Spoiler alert – Joe Harris will not be on my all-ACC team (which should go up tomorrow).

7:32 – Virginia fouls on every possession, usually twice. Like a low rent version of Duke.

7:35 – Side note – Maryland’s warmups look like 70s era velvet smoking jackets. I picked up one of those for the last time I dressed up for Halloween (Rudy the Armenian pimp from Kids in the Hall).

7:40 – Down to five. Almost over now.

7:42 – Another phantom foul bails out UVA.

7:43 – Len hammered, called for travelling.

7:44 – First over the back called on UVA all game. They do it incessently.

7:47 – UVA at the line with chance to cut it to 4, last media timeout. Maryland will need another pair of random threes, it’s all the offense they have. I’m assuming someone kidnapped Nick Faust.

7:49 – Neither of these teams belong in the dance.

7:52 – Late whistle from the out of position ref. Maryland has also completely tanked. It will be down to one, and soon all over. A Thursday loss to VPI awaits.

7:55 – Defense goes to sleep, tie game. What a choke.

7:57 – You know MD won’t score (and UVA won’t be called for a foul), so UVA will have the final shot for win or OT.

8:00 – Wells hits, and UVA calls timeout with 6.9 left. Please, please, please force the ball to Evans and foul him. Why would UVA call time when Harris had the ball?

8:02 – Overtime as another Wahoo foul isn’t called. Alex Len sucks.

8:05 – There’s no reason to watch the OT. UVA will win big. Awful game.

8:07 – MD can’t throw it in the ocean. I’m signing off. Time to read a book.

I’m with BJD, I like Va Tech to punk us on Thursday afternoon.

We roll into the NCAA’s with a 10 seed.

  2. bill.onthebeach 03/10/2013 at 9:06 PM #

Nah… we ain’t gotta go do all that…

    1. We just played three games in eight days…. four days off is a lifetime this time of year…. plus Coaches will “program” the first two games…

    1. Who was our best ( or who played the hardest, showed the most effort, ever how you put it ) player the last three games ?
Who was the guy Woo was talking about when he said he couldn’t talk about it…?
    ….same guy…. I think….

so I’m thinking ( after Coach spoke with Pop on the phone a couple of times ), we finally GOTT that worked out…

    2. All three of our freshman are North Carolina High School boys….

We don’t need to “explain” to them what it means to play well in Greensboro in March…. all three will be significant factors in our Tournament success…

    3. Tournament Coaching is a whole different playbook than regular season coaching….

We liked what we saw last year in March and I am looking for more of the same this time… a couple of surprise moves, a whole lot more intensity from the bench and sharper in game decisions and play calling….

    4. Miami peaked a couple weeks ago and has not yet recovered…. they won’t be sharp….
(nobody in So Beach gets excited about anything except So Beach ) except maybe Coach L….

THIS should get us to Saturday or Sunday ….

But after last night….. against Dook… I ain’t making any promises….about what might or might not happen on Sunday….

  3. Wulfpack 03/10/2013 at 9:09 PM #

Perhaps. But it is a totally different team dynamic this year. No leader either. I just don’t get the sense these guys want to win for one another.

  4. MrPlywood 03/10/2013 at 9:14 PM #

Oh well, reduced to rooting for another team to take care of State’s business. blech. I need to take a shower now.

  5. TLeo 03/10/2013 at 9:14 PM #

I think we win a very close one against VT thursday and then lose friday but a loss to VT would not surprise me either.

  6. bill.onthebeach 03/10/2013 at 9:18 PM #

    Wuf…You are right about that…..

No one has taken Painter’s position as the Head Cheerleader…encourager… motivator….smoother… all of the above….

But it’s tournament time…. and that offers alot of opportunity for coming together and “bonding”….. much more so than anything regular season…..

…. and then sometimes… it just doesn’t work out that way….

The key, I think, will be the freshmen, especially one of them…..

  7. john of sparta 03/10/2013 at 9:19 PM #

    away
    game
    equals
    loss.

  8. Wufpacker 03/10/2013 at 9:21 PM #

LOL Plywood…I said almost the exact same thing verbatim (but with a few more expletives) to a mutual friend just about an hour ago.

Haven’t made it to the shower yet though, so I’m still feeling a bit sticky 😀

  9. motorhead 03/10/2013 at 9:24 PM #

So Bill, you’re expecting a different game plan/ rotation?

  10. 61Packer 03/10/2013 at 9:28 PM #

When I turned this game on, it was 29-12 in favor of Maryland, and I knew Virginia had them where they wanted them. I knew right then that UVA would win this game, not because of their NCAAT implications, but because it would force us to play on Thursday when we were certain we wouldn’t have to.

This game was a microcosm of the Wolfpack’s 2012-13 season. It was an ugly game that for all practical purposes interested no one and meant little. It was on ESPNU, which has become our flagship station. It featured a struggling, underachieving team (wearing red, although they sometimes wear black too) playing on the road with all the confidence of a Damon Thornton-HWSNBN team leading in overtime.

These Terps led by 17 on at least two occasions in the first half, and maintained a healthy lead deep into the game. But in Wolfpack-fashion, they let an inferior opponent back into it, then surrendered a lay-in at the buzzer to force overtime. Reminded me of our 51-50 ending at College Park.

In the OT, the Terps finally came through with the expected result when Dez Wells, brilliantly playing the role of CJ Leslie, booted it away on the Terps’ next-to-last possession, sealing our Thursday date in Guilford County against Virginia Tech.

Something deep down tells me we could run the table from this bracket, easily taking out the last-place Gobblers and then surviving a 45-44 win over the Cavaliers on Friday. Then, we would be the team, not Duke, to shut down the Miami Machine. And after the game, Lo Brown and Calvin Leslie would be the darlings of the media, basking in the glory which of course we deserved more than first-place Miami. After all, we were SUPPOSED to finish first, not them.

And on Sunday, it’s another version of Red-Hot and Blue, and we jump all over the Holes early. But even though Stamey’s Barbeque is closed on Sunday, we smell smoke, and lo and behold, it’s US who are getting smoked! JJ Redick’s ghost has appeared, but this time wearing light blue, and in one short but beastly Dr. Calvin/Mr. CJ display of turnovers, airballs and fouls, we snatch Hole Roy from the jaws of defeat. Somehow, we all knew that somewhere up in those Coliseum bright lights, we wouldn’t survive the dazzle. So while the Holes cut down yet another pair of nets, we limp home on very tired legs to contemplate, again, what might have been.

We’ll get home just in time to see Selection Sunday, which will put us in the same bracket with the Holes, but we won’t have to play them until the Sweet 16 if we get that far. And when we go out of the second round like a fading star in some distant galaxy, averting another UNC meeting, there will be sighs of relief from many in Wolfpack Nation.

Because there’s only so much you can take.

  11. JeremyH 03/10/2013 at 9:30 PM #

Why in basketball we are playing so bad now? I mean WBS can protect the ball, find people in position to score, and is a good free throw shooter. It took Roy half a season to realize three guard lineup is money, what is taking us so long? Why in basketball we are playing so bad now?

  12. ADVENTUROO 03/10/2013 at 9:59 PM #

We really have no one to blame, but ourselves. NOW, we can throw in a few REF’s…..Jamie Luckie of KH fame was officiating at the UVA-MD game. If you look at the foul ratio, it is putrid.

NOW…..is there a conspiracy to deprive us of wins? Probably not….but I am SURE (well, OK, I am not, but I suspect) that the Refs KNOW what the standing are.

Today’s game was as poorly officated as the FSU game yesterday.

OK….I DO see BlACK HELICOPTERS over Lake Wheeler…..so here is my take.

We put in a “request” for NO KH this year. NO ONE, or at least the fringes that I have asked will say YES or NO to the rumor that each ACC team has one BLACK BALL ref…and you do NOT have to use it if you don’t want to.

KH has officiated EVERY team in the season going back 10 years or so…..except for a “NO WF” year and now a “NO NCSU” year.

So, did Debbie and Gottfried play a small trump? I think so…..but I would get a bottle of Crown Black that we will DRAW him in one of the ACCT games….

Like most, I do NOT feel good or positive about this team It had all the makings (perhaps TOO much overhype) of being a 2 or 3 ACC regular season and a contender for the Tourney. The “spirit” is gone. A LOT of guys are still playing hard, but there is a lack of a singular purpose

If we lose on Friday, we will drop another seed, maybe 2, in the NCAAT. I think we will be lucky to get past the opening round. We WILL go….but our chances of being one and done are good.

Not the fire or focus or spirit of the 1983 team. Unless Coach does some Vulcan Mind Melds or the team is visited in the locker room by an appirition of Jimmy V., then they will be as rag-tag as they were against FSU.

I really think that Coach Lowe had his 2007 ACC Tourney team more MENTALLY prepared to win it all that Coach Gottfried does with this team. That will draw fire….but Coach Lowe DID motivate them that year and he may have micromanaged things, but he came within a few plays of upsetting Roy and the overconfident blue panty boys.

Coach G. is fighting something bigger and it is like a mutant organism. It just keeps growing and morphing and no matter what type of treatment he tries, it comes out in another form and is resistant to that…..now SURE….sometimes it goes away or into remission….but we are NEVER cured of it….

Still, I wll be in G’boro and probably take in all the games….but don’t think that I will cheering on Saturday for the pack….but you NEVER know….

I just don’t understand. How we lost to these 2 teams. Thye both look like garbage to me. Does anybody here see this game as good basketball? It took OT to reach 60. How can we not finish ahead of a bad UNC team? This team of our will reap what they couldn’t sew.

  14. blpack 03/10/2013 at 11:23 PM #

No one to blame but ourselves. We had 3 bad losses and had to hope for a UMd miracle to avoid the Thursday games. Now we have to make lemonade out of our lemon draw in the ACCT. We will be fortunate to beat VT on Thursday. I see State losing an ugly game on Friday. Hope I’m wrong.

  15. wolffpride 03/11/2013 at 12:16 AM #

We will beat VT. Correction, we will own VT. Then we will own UVA. That team has no right to even be on the court with us, it’s like middleschoolers vs. highschoolers. It’s about time we start playing like we should and outside of our last game, we have been playing dominant. We will draw some dismal refs in the ACCT but I dont think it will matter, we will beat the Virginia teams. I cant help but think that a rematch against Miami would be in our favor, if we still have our legs…

    … Yes… I am.

“Unless Coach does some Vulcan Mind Melds”

Thank you for not saying “Jedi mind meld.”

From a “glue” standpoint, we miss the hell out of Alex Johnson.

I predict the castrated turkeys lead by as much as 15-20, before a too late rally cuts it to 5. Just hope they also beat UVA to send them to the NIT where they belong. Blech.
