Kellie Harper out after four seasons

WRAL:

“We thank Kellie for her service to our women’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Deborah A. Yow. “We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

Harper finished with a 70-64 record (23-39 in the ACC) in four seasons in Raleigh. Her teams made the NCAA tournament just once, in her first season. They ended the 2012-13 season 17-17 (7-11) Sunday with a loss to James Madison in the second round of the Postseason Women’s NIT.

More to come.

Saw that coming. Mediocrity just won’t hack it any more. Sorry to see a good person go. I sure thought when Kelly was hired that she would do a good job. She had all the right credentials. The post mortem conversation will be interesting.

Understandable given DY’s mindset and guidelines. KH is a good person, and I hate to see her go. I had hoped she could get it done. And I’m sure she’ll learn from the experience and grow from it. Good luck wherever you go, KH!

Now, let’s gat a championship caliber coach to replace her!

Performance based organization. Good call by Yow. Good luck in the future to Harper.

It looks like Glance has done a solid job at Illinois State in the Missouri Valley, but I have a feeling Yow is looking for a young whippersnapper.

The best looking coach in the ACC, but unfortunately it didn’t make her the best coach. Her teams were just never there, and size (height) was always an issue when playing better teams. Hope the replacement will can get us going. Maybe Shea Ralph? She is from Fayetteville, and on the UCONN staff.

Since the terps are leaving the league will she go after Brenda Frese? One would think yes.

Tried to keep an eye on her recruiting since she has been here. She was terrible. Could not recruit. I think she COULD coach, but you gotta have some big time talent, PARTICULARLY in the ACC.

    Coach13….

My sentiments. Watched on the sidelines many times. She saw (from a player and coach’s perspective) what was going on. She would scream at her girls to watch certain players who were getting open.

Don’t know if the players were not properly prepared or what.

She was also fiercely (and emotionally) competitive.

However, for whatever reason, she did not recruit. The banners in Reynolds are old and faded….as is Reynolds.

The planned (date – TBD) for the $40 Mill upgrade will help a lot. So, I don’t know if you can lay the recruting problems TOTALLY at her feet. The folks with the strong women’s programs have also invested a lot. We are totally in the 60’s on the facility.

Don’t know WHO it will be…..but, I’ll bet that the new coach will make Sylvia Hatchell look like the Playmate of the Month……gone are the days of the stilleto heels.

When Kelly was hired, I actually thought this was going to work out. She’d had success at a lower level program, had a lot of spirit (remembered that from her playing days), had a good pedigree and had the looks that I felt would help on the recruiting trail. The recruiting has just never been there, and I think having her husband on staff (which was a major red flag early) have held her back.

I’m sad to see her go, simply because this means we paid a buy out on a non-revenue sport. That’s something that I just don’t think is a good idea. I am worried about our books, though I have no insider information that would directly cause this.

As for the replacement, I don’t think anyone high profile like Gail G. is walking through that door. That type of hire wouldn’t seem to align with our resources or the track record of hires that Yow has made. She typically hires a successful, younger coach from a lower level. In short, I suspect a hire a lot like Harper.

What goes unsaid is that under the previous regime (Jed Clampett), she would be safe. Do wish her the best.

    RIP Kay Yow.
