Julius Randle eliminates Wolfpack

Reports this afternoon that Top 5 high school recruit from the class of 2013, Julius Randle, has eliminated NC State from consideration.

I strong agree with the comments from Wufpacker on our message forums that are re-printed below. You can’t reallyfault much of anything that Randle did in his recruitment and I couldn’t be happier that he eliminated us with so much time remaining in the recruiting cycle.

I have no problem at all with how Randle has conducted himself with respect to his recruitment. He has been very respectful of all the coaches and schools involved and hasn’t made any comments (not publicly at least….none that I’ve heard anyway) that should be taken by anyone that he’s even leaning in a particular direction. He’s been complimentary of all the schools and the visits to them, though some more than others.

NC State clearly needs more depth in the post for next season and there is plenty of time for the staff to go find the right 5th year senior transfer, JUCO transfer or high school recruit.

I wish him all the best.

I can’t help but think that if this year’s team had lived up to some of the expectations then he would be singing a different tune. Of course we will never know for sure.

Now lets find someone who wants to Run with the Pack!

This news gives Gott time to go full-bore after other targets so we do not get Amile Jeffersoned…

FYI – For curiosity sake, I looked up Andrew Young’s line for Texas A&M this season since he was the presumed player we missed on due to the Jefferson timing. Doesn’t look like he’s contributed much on a mediocre team, but another body that makes ANY contribution would have been huge on this year’s team for purposes of being able to play aggressive defense. Here’s the link to this year’s stats:

Deleted post. It was based on an outdated tweet that I saw.

Hate to see you go, Mr. Randle.

Agreed it’s much better to know now. Perhaps we can land someone who might play 3-4 years, even if they’re not quite Randle-esque as a freshman.

    Fookin Ell!!

Maybe we can go for Clayton’s Gary Clarke or get Tyreke Coger to switch from MTSU once (if) we offer.

These undersized bigs that play for four years can be a huge asset. Think of what this team might look like with Josh Davis as a Senior tonight!

Disappointing, but not surprising in a way. Randle seems to be a decent young man and he is making a tough decision for himself. I wish him the best.

at least he didn’t go to Duke or UNC

el scrotcho: I think had we known about Jefferson, we may possibly have not seen two transfers. I personally believe Painter’s reason for transfer because he always seemed to love it here, but perhaps we wouldn’t have seen another one. Perhaps we’d have added someone else?

I never thought Young was more than a warm body. I remember a story about Howell and Leslie working him out and Young not doing all that well.

Stinks that we’re out for Randle, but I’ve felt he was UK or Kansas bound for some time.

So one tweet is enough of a source to know that it is a done deal?

The Javoni Robinson angle will be interesting in terms of depth inside. If he is coach able and motivated then he could be a great role player. Never a game changer, but he has JJ Hickson athletic abilities; he just has never played ball and is too green to just get thrown in there with the speed and physical nature of the game. A Grad Senior would be amazing since we will have NO Seniors besides JV. You’ve got to have these guys with the urgency knowing it is now or never.

“So one tweet is enough of a source to know that it is a done deal?”

The source is the reason it’s a done deal.

Assuming Leslie and Brown go pro after this year, we really, really need a 5-6 player class for 2013 to get some depth.

Assuming Vandy sticks around and when the LSU transfer becomes eligible, with the current three commits we’re back to only 8 scholarship players.

Maybe Jeffersons Daddy can get a special waiver to transfer to State. Medical condition has been discovered that Amile is too dark in complexion.

  17. Rochester 03/06/2013 at 8:06 PM #

Not having a go, but why would we expect Vandy to be any more useful as a senior than he is now?

  18. pakfanistan 03/06/2013 at 10:58 PM #

^ We’re hoping he has a growth spurt.

  19. Wulfpack 03/07/2013 at 7:32 AM #

Don’t think we can expect much of anything out of Vandy.

  20. Gene 03/07/2013 at 8:03 AM #

I’m not expecting much out of Vandy, just pointing out he’s on scholarship and with him we have a grand total of 8 scholly players and look to have the same total next year, i.e. we really, really, really, really lack the depth your typical D1 upper echelon team would have.

I’ve heard an excuse for Kentucky’s off year is because they have 8 scholarship players and guys are going against walk-ons in practice, so practice isn’t as intense as it should be. I heard the same thing regarding Duke being very thin, when they had injury problems mid-season and only 8 scholarship players.

If we really want to be a contender we need more quality depth.

  21. Rochester 03/07/2013 at 9:33 AM #

Vandy is essentially a walk-on at this point. His minutes lately have come when the walk-ons hit the court. So really, for practice purposes we are at eight scholarship quality players this year (including Ralston Turner). Hard to have a legit scrimmage without at least 10.
