It wasn’t supposed to be this way

We will downloading and de-briefing all sides of the NC State basketball program in the coming days. To start, we’d love your thoughts on any of this that you would like to tackle.

From @joeovies Twitter account this morning. (Link)

In a less flippant approach, Ovies penned these talking points about the season’s end.

1. Defense and turnovers. Those might be the only talking points needed following NC State’s NCAA tournament exit. The Wolfpack couldn’t get a handle on either facet of the game in the first half, and they spent the second half trying to climb out of it.

It started when Temple blasted out to a 12-4 lead in the opening five minutes. The Wolfpack responded after Mark Gottfried was forced to call a timeout, if only for a fleeting moment. The Owls answered with a 9-0 run after NC State tied the game at 15 and slowly built a 16-point lead while the Wolfpack went scoreless in the final 4:05 of the half.
MORE INFO

NC State actually shot better and corrected the careless turnovers in the second half, but they were never able to generate enough stops to overtake Temple.

Khalif Wyatt continued a nasty trend of opponents careering it against Wolfpack’s inconsistent defensive effort, finishing the afternoon with 31 points on 9-of-22 shooting and 12 points at the line. Meanwhile, Jake O’Brien dropped four from beyond the arc.

[snip]

4. Lack of depth, a lingering issue throughout the year, bit NC State when key players didn’t have fouls to give during crunch time.

Lorenzo Brown, saddled with four fouls, was isolated during an in-bounds play and could not stop Temple with about 35 seconds left. Leslie, also dealing with four fouls, waited for help for about four seconds before eventually stopping the clock with his fifth foul.

5. Apparently, there was no switch to be flipped for NC State. If there was, they couldn’t find it stumbling through the dark. Much of the issues that plagued their up-and-down season popped up throughout their game against Temple.

Ultimately, they proved that conventional wisdom holds true – teams are who they are by the time March rolls around. NC State was a talented group that toyed with their food all season and they never really developed killer mentality. It truly manifested itself on the defensive end and slow starts in some of their most important contests.

My comments so far have all been directed to the players on the team. I have no problem with the coaching staff. In fact, I think Gottfried is a great coach who got more out of this overrated squad than most coaches could. I also give even the worst coaches (like Lowe)at least 4 years before I consider the team their fault.

I’d like to see Gott coach a team without CJL before I pass judgement on him totally.

I do like the fact that he is willing to play a running style when we see the game headed back to scores in the 50’s. He has to develop some depth on the roster. The Painter transfer hurt us a lot in that regard this year. If he can somehow add a JUCO or graduate transfer big man and Brown returns we could run 8-9 deep next year.

I don’t discount the work that goes into running the break effectively. We ran effectively this year after a lot of made baskets. That is not easy to do.

I think it took too long to figure out that we needed to start Warren but that may have been due to how long it took Warren to start working on defense.

    Defense
CJL – just too lazy to play solid fundamental defense.
Howell – had to stay out of foul trouble for us to have a chance.
Warren – His defense improved markedly about halfway through the ACC schedule.
Wood – He was frequently overmatched from a quickness stand point and had to play softer on the perimeter than you’d like to see. He gave up a lot of dribble penetration as well.
Brown – quick hands and could be disruptive at times but he seemed to get lost too often.
Purvis – Showed flashes of being a good defender and certainly has the mental make up to be one as well as the physical tools. I think he will be a very good defender as he gains experience.
Lewis – Overmatched on defense all of the time. That is why his minutes were limited. On a team with so many sub par defenders it was tough for Gott to remove Brown to let Lewis get minutes.

We have to recruit some shooters. I’ve complained about this for the last 7 years. If Brown, Warren, or Purvis was half the threat Wood was then Howell and Leslie would have averaged 8 more points and 5 less turnovers a game between them. We were the fifth best FG shooting team in the country with Leslie and Howell playing two on three down low.

Really disappointed with the season but I should have taken my own advice about how much the freshmen were likely to contribute.

So this was a WTF season. I remember a WTF season from my childhood, 1979, the year after we lost in the NIT finals. Same lineup, but no success. Any of you old timers remember what went wrong that year? Apologies is this is off-topic.

I have been amazed at all the idiotic posts on that other site from posters wanting to get rid of Gott already. As disappointing as the year was I do agree there was some bit of improvement and he has the program headed in the right direction given the past decades of ineptitude.

Here’s another ACC historical analogy for you: Virginia, 1984. After three years with national player of the year Ralph Sampson and a whole lot of nothing, Hoos fans probably thought they would suck big time in 1984. Instead, it was addition by subtraction. They actually started playing as a team instead of standing around waiting for Sampson to do something (sound familiar) and, wonders of wonders, they were the surprise Final Four team that year… Now Sampson >>>>> CJ, but you get my point…

I really dont think the lack of defense was lack of effort. I think it was lack of talent on the defensive end. We were trying to rely on freshmen that rarely are able to play good d, undersized big men, and a slow wing player. Lo was the only player that was a good defensive player. We have to get better on that side of the ball. Hopefully better size, age and athletic ability will improve the D next season.

  7. JeremyH 03/23/2013 at 10:53 PM #

“I’m tired of discussing “talent”. This wasn’t a great team and the season ending shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone.”

    +1

Raw talent without motor, determination, and commitment to team is just a flash in the pan.

I must say we looked like world-beaters on the fast break, but unfortunately some flaws were too much to overcome.

Interested to see what next year’s group can do–check that–excited to see what next year’s group can do.

Warren at SF and Purvis at SG will take major strides forward in sophomore year as is typically the case. With Brown returning at the point and Anya and Washington inside, team will be athletic. Turner as sixth man rotating with Purvis and Warren, while Barber/Lewis behind Brown. OR Brown, Purvis, Turner, Warren, Anya/Washington rotating inside would work too. Getting to a 9-man rotation would be nice.

  9. JSRy2k 03/24/2013 at 1:21 AM #

I’m super nervous about next year. Depth will be non-existent for a second straight year. Assuming Zo & CJL bolt, we presently stand at 7 decent players in the rotation assuming all three freshmen are ready from day one. Add Vandy and there’s only 8 scholarship players. There is little excuse for a cupboard that bare.

  10. Texpack 03/24/2013 at 9:22 AM #

    Rotation Players
    4-5 Anya, Washington, Warren, Vandy?
    2-3 Brown, Warren, Purvis, Turner
    1 Lewis, Barber, Brown

I agree that lack of effort by our veteran players, minus Howell, doomed this season. They know what they are supposed to be doing, and that is not on Gott. He can’t play for them. As for replacing the coaches name with Lowe in that comment. I can’t buy that. This was a common accurance with Lowe and his teams, with their horrible records. This team has shown it can show up, but just didn’t show it consistently. Leslie being the biggest disappointment. Preseason player of the year in the ACC???

  12. wolfpup44 03/24/2013 at 1:46 PM #

I think after 30 years of writing checks to the Wolfpack Club I can express my disappointment. But I wish I knew what direction we were going. My position is mediocre coaching could not overcome inconsistent performance. The true measure of this team is the inability to win the close ones and their ability to completely lose control of a game. Where were our sophomores….were none. Had 3 walk ons the bench. Gott can recruit, but 4 star recruits aren’t going to beat 5 star recruits like UNC, Duke, Kansas and Kentucky. I would rather have 3 and 4 star kids with a good coaching staff. Rumor now is Lutz is calling the shots in the game. Not sure if that is good or bad. I am concerned about next year. Warren and Purvis can’t shoot FTs. TJ will have to get aggressive on the boards. Lewis showed some promise but other times he seemed to succumb to good defense. Who is going to work these kids to get them ready for next year? I think Warren will be ok. Purvis has shown a complete lack of discipline going to the basket and giving up fouls. Well guess we can start looking forward to football. I have lost my interest in baseball, looks like the ACC is getting the better of us.

wolfpup44, player development and conditioning is something that has impressed me so far with this coaching staff.

Players have gotten better than in any other previous coaching staff and we’ve been able to play an up tempo style, with a short bench, which means our guys are getting the most out of S&C.

Howell got pushed to get into shape and made first team all conference.

Brown and Leslie went from talented players to all-conference contributors two years in a row.

I remember athletic players like Fells coming here and not improving to that level.

FT shooting is an issue with this team and I’m not sure what the coaching staff can do to get guys to make FT’s. That seems to be something a player has to work on, on his own time, if he has the work ethic for it.

Anyway, the Achilles heel of this team this year and looks like next year, is going to be a lack of depth at key positions.

It’ll be a couple of years before we can hope to be truly competitive, but should have enough talent to win more than we lose, but to take the next step up as a program is going to take time to get enough bodies in here.

If Vandenburg gets any significant minutes next year, that will be a sure sign we are having a very, very bad season. He was as much of a disappointment this year in the “8th man off the bench” as CJ was at the top of the bill. Dude couldn’t even get rebounds, and was absolutely an offensive liability.

    Keep the faith.

Disappointing season? Yes, on some level mostly preseason expectations #6 in the polls and preseason ACC favorite. The problem is this team after watching it all season wasn’t as “talented” as everyone thinks. The team was fundamentally flawed due to Coach Blowe.

Scott Wood – Good 3 point shooter, but all he can do is catch and shot! In 4 years he never developed the ability to create his own shot. Is that on him or coaching? He could easily be neutralized by better teams. Leaving our only 3 point threat covered.

With that defenses could clamp down inside as Lo just can’t shot a 3. Watching these other teams they have more than one player that can hit a 3 consistently or somewhat and create their shot. State not as much.

CJ – Everyone knows. Good or bad who shows up this game? At some point it is on him. He was too much of a me first player. A blackhole with the ball.

Lo – Not a 3 point threat to help out Wood or stretch a D. OK jump shot but sloppy with the ball. He probably is better suited as not a PG. I rather have seen Lewis run the show and Lo as the other G. That is on Gott.

Howell – He was the only Blowe player that really improved over the 3-4 years and 2 under Gott. He was as Coach K said a beast all season and gave his all. He’s the one of the 4 I will miss the most.

The 3 freshman were freshman. Ups and downs. I wish the 3 played together at the same time so that is on Gott. Depth was pretty weak. You couldn’t really bench CJ when he was on his bad game as well who is going in Vandenburg? (Biggest waste on any team). The program is trending up which is better than when I was at State under Blowe and TOB were the programs were well terrible.

Overall, I am disappointed mostly based on preseason hype. The team though had its problems that we could see through the season. Inconsistent effort, no D a lot, played with their heads up their butt. Gott takes heat, but it isn’t all on him. Only so much you can do. He isn’t the one taking free throws that they clanked. He isn’t the one with flaws in his game that haven’t been addressed in their college career.

Side note Shaka didn’t do so hot this tourney. Consider they beat Akron with well their 3 best players out and got canned by Michigan who didn’t school us.

  17. nouveau wolf 03/26/2013 at 12:36 AM #

Jesus, a lot of you guys are fickle.

Gott came in to coach a team, and build a program, that NOBODY wanted anything to do with.

All he did in his 1st 2 years was get to the NCAA tourney both years; play on Saturday in the ACC tourney both years; beat Carolina and Duke(took an illegal shove to Howell’s back to lose to Miami); and bring back a very entertaining style of offense.

Yes, this team underachieved. Yes, disappointing. But can anyone say we’re headed in the WRONG direction?
With a solid recruiting class next year, and already have top commits for the year after that???

I hardly ever come back to this site anymore because of the negativity.

And if your happiness REALLY depends on how 5 undergrads are playing basketball…you might want to re-evaluate.
