Gottfried to UCLA Is In The Rumor Mill

The rumor mill for coaching changes is already cranking up for the offseason, and on that State fans might find interesting is this: per multiple sources, UCLA head coach Ben Howland has been notified that he will be terminated, and one of the names already being floated around is NC State head coach Mark Gottfried:

UCLA Set To Fire Howland

UCLA is set to fire men’s basketball head coach Ben Howland on Sunday, reports Yahoo! Sports and Rivals.com.

Howland’s job status with the team was at risk when the team lost 83-63 to No. 11 seed Minnesota in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.

When asked about his job security after the loss, Howland didn’t have much to say.

“I have no comment. Anything in reference to any questions concerning my job status, I just want to talk about the fact that I am so proud of these kids,” he said.

So where does the Gottfried connection come in? Andy Glockner, the college basketball writer for SI.com:

Glockner did add a few minutes later that he doubted it was going to happen, but at the same time, he did take the time to share what he’d heard, so we may assume it come from at least semi-credible sources:

Make of it what you will, but given the fact that Gottfried has taken a near-dead NC State program to the NCAA’s two years running and has incoming recruits to the program that should set it up for sustained success, it’s easy to see why his name would be in the mix, especially at a school where he was once an assistant coach.  Time will tell what may or may not come of this.

wolfpup44 reminds me a bit of Bob Kennel. He reminds me of a lot of other things too.

  2. DrWuffette1day 03/24/2013 at 2:10 PM #

Mr. Kennel lost most of his credibility with Fowler.

  3. Wufpacker 03/24/2013 at 2:15 PM #

Not sure which of the two should be more insulted there ‘foose.

And I missed this gem the first go ’round….

“Changing out coaches does not bring results.”

    Ummmm…..

Not sure whether folks are being naive or intentionally coy about certain things on this thread. Either way it’s a solid effort to this point.

You people. You people are the reason we can’t have nice things. When LOTS of coaches (think of how many, it is a long list) turn down an opportunity to come here and coach, an opportunity that on paper would seem to be a no brainer, you people sit around and endlessly speculate why. The answer is in the mirror. I support our coaches no matter what, up until whatever point in time they are no longer our coach, and then I start supporting the next guy. The same with our players. If you coach or play for NC State, then you are a fellow Wolfpacker, no matter what. That’s what is important. I wonder frequently whether some of you understand that.

In the midst of all this lamenting and breast beating please remember 2 years ago the core group of players on this team could not even bring the ball past half court against even the weakest of presses.

In the past two years players have improved, some dramatically so. Lots of work left to do as well.

  7. BamaPack 03/24/2013 at 3:15 PM #

Well, there is some truth to that. We do have PGs that actually dribble facing the correct basket now. Improvement?

I would be shocked if gott was on top of UCLA’s list. I can see him being a fall back candidate.

I don’t think he has proven he can consistently produce the results they expect… yet.

Let’s not forget our last two coaching searches when it comes to the UCLA job. Is Gottfried at the top of their list? Probably not…but they may not get their top 1-3 choices and it may come down to offering him the job. He’d be a fool not to take it…even if he gets fired after 5 years there, he could always take another job on the level of NC State.

    And I repeat

“I have refrained from spewing on this site because there is some repetitively dumb s*#t put out there by, quite frankly, people who delude themselves with how much they know about coaching at the D-1 level. For those of you who BROADCAST (and that is now what it is from this site, which is very well done for the most part) questioning of qualifications and intelligence of Coach Gottfried, get a clue he deserves the benefit of the doubt for while. He has brought a lot to the program. There is some work to do but the incessant questioning and amateur (I stress this adjective) critique every time the players act goofy is unhealthy.
The jury is and should be out for a little while!”

NC State should exert a lot of energy trying to keep Gott if there is a need to.

For anyone conducting a coaching search there is currently a very distinct place to start – Brad Stevens.

Shaka beat Stevens by 32 this year, finished ahead of him in the conference standings, and had the ranked team. They both definitely have two different styles. I would think Shaka’s fits the UCLA mold better. He would get the athletes and it would be 40 minutes of hell out west. I’m not knocking Stevens in any way, he is an excellent coach. But it isn’t so one sided. They are both going to be doing their thing at a high level for years to come.

I’m not seeing UCLA offering Gottfried a job unless they miss on everyone else on their list. I don’t mean that as any disrespect to our coach. I just think three things are going to work against him. First, he’s a Harrick disciple. Not to suggest there’s any stain on his name because of it, it’s just that UCLA has been through their share of Harrick guys and I think they’re through fishing in that pond. Second, whether they deserved it or not NC State couldn’t live up to the #6 ranking in preseason. It would be a hard sell to the UCLA faithful for them to hire a guy that started out ranked in the top ten and couldn’t get them across the finish line in the top 25. I mean Gott is a definite improvement for us over Lowe. But UCLA just fired a guy who went to 3 straight Final Fours. They don’t want a guy who’s biggest accomplishment at his last job was a sweet sixteen appearance. And last, I just think his sample size at State is just too small. 2 straight years finishing in the tournament is great, but I’m not sure it’s enough time for UCLA to commit long term.
Again no disrespect for Coach Gottfried , I’m happy to have him and, overall, I like what he’s done with the program so far, but UCLA hiring him would be on par -enthusiasm wise-with Kentucky’s hire of Billy Gillespie or UNC’s hire of Matt Doherty.

What level of basketball is NCSU…? If people think NCSU is a stepping stone program in general, or a stepping stone for the likes of a UCLA…uh, you’re mistaken.

  15. OutWestWolf 03/24/2013 at 4:14 PM #

Fair enough on the beat down Butler took this year from Shaka. Games get lopsided sometimes. I believe their records were overall identical.

IMO Stevens Big Dance performance is incomparable, including Shaka’s. Given the rankings Steven’s tournament record is even more impressive.

  16. Lumpy 03/24/2013 at 4:15 PM #

@TMD11, I don’t think it’s about whether or not NC State is a stepping stone job or not. UCLA is in a better place for this coaching search than NC State was during it’s last coaching search and their criteria will be different. They aren’t looking for someone to get them to the tournament or to just make them competitive in the PAC 12 because they are already at that level. They are looking for someone to get them back in the top ten ASAP, and if they can land a big name, even better.

BamaPack there has been demonstrated improvement. Where we want to be? Not at all but the best 2 year record for the Pack since the ’80’s – maybe that says a lot about the suckitude since then.
There is no doubt Gottfried and staff are much better than any staff we have had since Valvano. What remains to be seen is are they what we need for the long haul or are we what Gottfried needs for that time span as well.
I share the frustrations of the last season just like all of us. I’m also trying to look at long term improvement in the program. In my opinion the last two years are not sufficient to pass judgement on Gottfried but if it happens he does leave the program is in far better shape than the one he found when he arrived.

We have been infiltrated by the idiots from Pack Pride! Jeez!

BTW, I want a new football coach…The current one has not won a danged game since he’s been on campus!

  19. tractor57 03/24/2013 at 5:30 PM #

lol ‘stick but there is some truth there

  20. Tau837 03/24/2013 at 5:37 PM #

    1. I am very happy to have Gott. What he has done at State so far is very impressive IMO, and he seemingly has the program set up for long term success. I don’t want to see him go anywhere.

    2. That does not mean Gott should be immune from criticism, and we should not assume anyone who criticizes him thinks he should be replaced.

    3. Like most here, I think Gott would accept the UCLA job if offered. He is a Wooden disciple. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is his dream job.

    4. I agree with others that it seems likely that Gott is not UCLA’s top candidate. Hard to say where he might be on their list and how far down their list they will have to go.

    5. Whoever said that we should hire Howland if Gott leaves should do some reading up on the issues Howland has had at UCLA in the past couple of seasons. Some really ugly stuff there. I’m on my phone right now but will dig up a link later if I remember.

    6. I’m not going to judge Gott for the personal issues. However, if what I heard is true, and if it continues, IMO he could ultimately get himself fired for it. So I hope it isn’t true and/or that it stops.

And whoever described Marshall just described a coach that wins without playing prima donna games..

I still say he’s disliked cause Southern boys don’t like people who wear “mousse” in their hair. Greg actually looked like he’d lost a good bit of hair last night since he was here in Rock Hill.

  22. Wulfpack 03/24/2013 at 5:54 PM #

Marshall is very well liked in Wichita. He’s done a tremendous job. Attendance is very solid, and with Creighton leaving for the Big East he is suddenly top dog in the MVC. He is making about a million out there and recently got an extension. I do think eventually he will leave but it will have to be the right fit as he has turned several big offers down. He is a very good coach.

“BTW, I want a new football coach…The current one has not won a danged game since he’s been on campus!”

    That’s funy!!

It’s a generational problem-got it have it my way and right now.

The energy and enthusiasm both Gott and DD have injected into the culture of NC STATE athletics is invaluable. I hope they stay for a long time.

  24. eas 03/24/2013 at 6:02 PM #

What are the personal issues about Gott that people keep mentioning?

  25. Pack1998 03/24/2013 at 6:05 PM #

Surprised this thread is still going, but have to say, it is a lot of fun. Who doesn’t like a good coaching rumor?

Gott is awesome, very happy he is here. We all are!

For perspective, look around the ACC — lots of programs would trade up. I don’t really think any real fan is questioning Gott’s ability.

    Now to UCLA . . .

Good luck to UCLA – these searches aren’t as easy as they recently were 4-5 years ago. The mid-majors pay pretty well, and NCAA has shown a reward for the little guys in the bids. And you get players for 4 years. Major conferences guys that are good simply don’t want to leave and take the risk. I don’t think the UCLA brand helps like you would think. It actually hurts. They just fired a guy that had 3 Final 4s and was hurt by injuries and player suspensions this year. Even the gold standard of UNC flailed with Doherty, they just had a trump card with Roy (whom Dean had to call and personally demand he take it).

I hope UCLA had a verbal accept prior to firing Howland — if they have to go through the hustle after the Final 4 their search could mimic hours. Yes, I said that. Shaka is probably the ideal coach for them based on where he is in his career. And note . . . who lost last night (VCU). Hope Shaka doesn’t have buyers remorse, again. I think he’d do exceptional in Hollywood. He loved the cameras in that his Final 4 run.
