Gott to Fans: I’m Still Committed to NC State

I’m sure there will be much more to come in the coming days, but Gott himself takes a little bit of the air out of the balloon of speculation that has been building for a few days now (where else but on twitter…oy):

Mark Gottfried ‏@Mark_Gottfried 22m

#WPN I am committed to being at @NCState for a long time Still as dedicated to rebuilding the program as I was 2 yrs ago when I arrived

It will be interesting to see who UCLA is targeting now that Gott has apparently (and finally) publicly addressed the issue in our favor.

(Insert Sendek removing his name from consideration joke here)

How about calling him an honest man’s Calapari? Since it looks like his players take their own SAT’s and all, I think that’s a better description.

He’s a hard worker, a good salesman and a guy that recruits seem to like. He’s underrated as a recruiter. He’s more Josh Pastner than Cal.

When he lands his first truly big fish (Randle would have counted) I will understand the bigger name comparisons.

I’ll be more reassured when UCLA has someone else in the fold. But I appreciate that Gott at least addressed the issue, even if the wording was a little fuzzy.

“Add some depth to our roster…”

Don’t need to convince me. Try telling Gottfried. Under his tenure we’ve lost several players to transfer and apparently are losing his first recruit, a McDonald’s All-American.

If UCLA comes calling, he’d be dumb to turn it down. His chances of winning a title there are much much higher. Landing the Julius Randles of the worlds would be much easier.

^^ I’m one to loathe the wild speculation, but HeySoos whats between the lines of those MG quotes looks pretty conspicuous.

^ Would sound better minus “still”.

  7. OutWestWolf 03/28/2013 at 7:14 PM #

^Yes. It’s hard to see snippets (pieces of quotes) and put them in the appropriate context, nice sentiments but he certainly doesn’t seem to be shutting any doors!

Give the man a break, he said he isn’t leaving, and people just want to read between the lines, and make more of it. I for one fully expect to see him on the sidelines next year, minus the Lowe’s players issue. Go Pack!

ESPN reporting that Butler’s Brad Stevens is in “contract negotiations” with UCLA.

Looks like the popcorn may have to wait until we go through this again next year. I would say
Ol Brad has that one locked up unless of course he doesn’t want it. He is an awesome coach but his personality just seems a little plain for the LA crowd.

Stevens “A little plain for the LA crowd”? Wooden fit that mold too, and he didn’t do too badly there.

  12. eas 03/28/2013 at 9:25 PM #

True but that was a good number of years ago when Wooden worked the LA crowd. I would say they are a tad more flashy these days.

I live in LA and the market is hungry for a winner, so UCLA will throw some money at someone. However you have to have thick skin out here. Kiffen took all hell this year. D’antoni was criticized before he took control. Although there are more Clippers fans, Del Negro will start hearing the howls if in the next couple of years does not make it into the finals. I don’t think they have talked contract extension. UCLA is still looking to replace Wooden and their basketball alum are some very smart and accomplished guys. The coach is like a celebrity in LA, so I look at UCLA’s short list I am not sure who would walk into this and be prepared for the media blitz. Gott has lived through it and the word is the alum were happy with him. However, is the job worth being publicly the second choice? As far as Gott’s loyalty. I think he is like everyone else. You work where you are most appreciated and where you think you will be successful. What is more possible? To dominate the ACC from the helm of NCSU or dominate the PAC12 from UCLA. It was great getting more media attention this year, but as soon as we began to lose we were off the air on the west coast. Finding success at UCLA could be easy for a good recruiter and that would make them a big fish in a very big pond. We will see.

Stevens staying at Butler. That 3.75 million buyout may not be that big of a deal after all……I hope Gott stays but as this drags on he has a better shot at ending up at UCLA.

Given the exorbitant price of Gottfried here’s a thought for UCLA: Calamari is likely a season or two out from trouble at KinTucky, cheaper than MG, definitely (more than anyone on earth) would love the cameras of LA, and likely would sell out BBN for a few dollars more. Match made in heaven!

If Gott had said what Wufpacker quoted, “Gott to Fans: I’m Still Committed to NC State”, I would have to agree with most of the comments, but that is NOT what Gottfried said. Gott said he was committed to being at NC State for a long time.

To say I’m “STILL committed” is like saying I’m a little pregnant. You are either committed or you’re not.

    For what it’s worth …

Of the coaches listed below, if you compare the average of the 1st and 2nd year records, these are the final NCAA and ACC rankings (Massey):

    Gott (NCAA 33, ACC 4)
    Roy (NCAA 36, ACC 6)
    V (NCAA 41, ACC 6)
    Herb (NCAA 44, ACC 8)
    Dean (NCAA 50, ACC 4)
    Norm (NCAA 79, ACC 6)
    K (NCAA 80, ACC 7)

Not too shabby for a guy considered a “good recruiter, but bad game coach”. (not my opinion, btw)

WPN bro’s, IMO we are darn lucky to have him. Period.

How will Gott do from this point on? I hope we get the chance to see.
