I’m sure there will be much more to come in the coming days, but Gott himself takes a little bit of the air out of the balloon of speculation that has been building for a few days now (where else but on twitter…oy):

It will be interesting to see who UCLA is targeting now that Gott has apparently (and finally) publicly addressed the issue in our favor.

    Glad to have Gott in full “Passover” mode and ecstatic Trea Turner is back in the Baseball lineup. We needed his bat to beat the Seagulls today and we definitely need Gott to step up to the plate and hold this rebuilding process together this off season.

    Glad Gott commented but I agree with Slamma. It’s at least a breath of fresh air.

    I’m telling you that 3.75 million buyout is a decent monkey wrench.

    Also agree with Slamma…that’s why I worded it “a little bit of the air”.

    And that there will be more in the coming days. We’ll see if that “more” goes in the same direction or does an about face.

    Sounds like the statement of someone saying, “If they come up with the $3.75M buyout, I’m gone”…

    Regardless, he’s been a very good coach for these two years, and our “program” is in a much better position than it was two years ago. By looking at the last two years, you can see that Lowe had an eye for talent, but just could not “lead”, and could not “manage.” Hiring Q. Jackson as DBO should have been the first red flag. Holy @$%^&&….

    I’ll add that while I think M.G. has been above average, what the last two years shows is that any “above average” coach can “WIN” at NC State…

    Yay.

    It’s not a denial, but whatevs.

    I think Coach Gottfried is a great fit here and I’m excited to see where we go if he does stay. This doesn’t mean I’m part of the ‘sunshine squad’ or think that he is absolved of any criticism whatsoever. Sad this has to be qualified.

    Now all of the same assholes who were fanning the flames of Gott to UCLA will be polluting the radio dials and TVs tomorrow talking about how Gottfried was never a candidate. I swear, the sleaze surrounding the college basketball coaching “carousel” is only surpassed by college basketball recruiting. It may even be a draw.

    It’s better than silence, but I will feel better when it is announced that Gottfried has signed a new extension and that his buyout (both ways, it’s only fair) has been increased.

    Had Twitter been around 10 years ago, perhaps we would have seen a tweet from Roy Boy that went something like “I don’t give a sh*t about Carolina.”

    Hope Gott doesn’t go anywhere, but until UCLA actually hires someone else I won’t breathe my full sigh of relief.

    Glad Gottfried staying. I place a very high value on the job Gottfried has done here in two years. He has taken an ACC team to the NCAAT his first two years, only two other ACC coaches have achieved that and they were UNC coaches that walked into squads full of All-Americans. He has put together a great staff. He has already recruited better than our previous three bball coaches. He is a man of outstanding character that represents our university well that embraces our past, loves our university, and is great with the media. He went 2-2 against Duke and UNC in his second year on the job. The future is bright and I am proud Mark Gottfried is our head coach! Go Pack!

    Why do you think Gott should say anything. I read a bunch of UCLA news yesterday and on most of it he was low on the list. So saying he does not want the job if no one has contacted him is like me saying I am not running for govenor. People would laugh and say who the hell do you think you are. It’a all cool guys, we’ve got to quit looking for disaster at every turn. Those days are behind us. This was just a bad luck comes in threes year – under achieved in FB, BB and BaseB (can we turn that around?)

    First of all, he needed to address it because it was taking on a life of it’s own and snowballing. He doesn’t have to confirm or deny any specifics but to not address it as he did is to invite that speculation to continue. And no, considering the speculation in our fanbase and elsewhere no one would laugh and it is not inappropriate.

    And you’re a bit premature on the baseball underachievement prediction. Time will tell, but how about we let Turner settle back into an everyday role and get at least to the season’s freaking midway point before we write them off. Holy shit.

    C’mon ‘Dog, read between ’em man. Even with the soft denial folks are still reading way into things.

    If you wanna see something that needs cardio paddles, I’d tell you to head over to the recap of last night’s baseball win and hear the crickets and see the cobwebs forming. But since I already know you been there (and only you) there’s no need to tell ya what you’re already privy to.

    Gott tweeted what he did either because he was starting to get asked about it by the JUCO guys he’s working on or because DY told him she had something for him. I think there’s a 90% chance it was the recruits. Until the speculation starts impacting guys he wants to bring in, there’s no reason to try to dampen it at all. I hope he really is going to stay. He’s made progress each of his first two years. Next year may have some bigger dips, but if we can bring in some guys to play 10-15 minutes a night over the next few weeks, the benefits of a really cohesive team may make up for some of the drop off in talent.

    All I’ll say is, if he DOES jump ship after a tweet like that (not like it’s an engraving, but it is his “word”) Ucla can have him… I tend to take him @ his word.

    I am glad he tweeted this info but it is a basic statement that any smart coach would say to keep his recruits and good will among his current job. It’s simple really…..if UCLA ponies up the cash he is out of here. If not then he is in perfect shape to stay without any bad will.

    I don’t think he is leaving due to the amount of cash it would take to get out of his contract. If UCLA wants to come up with that much cash I think we all know the result. The LA lifestyle is popular to many people and others not so much. We all know Gott really liked his time in CA and still coaches the UCLA style play from the older days. All comes down to whether they want to pony up the contract buy out. If the salaries were equal (with the added CA cost of living $$$) I certainly think he would be headed to the west coast.

    For now we can be content with his post and try to ignore the rumor mill.

    That tweet doesn’t mean a thing funny how most on here mock tweets like that when its a different school but seemed relieved that it is our coach.

    Gott should use the speculation to ours and his advantage by obtaining free publicity.

    Seriously, its flattering to have UCLA try and fail to poach your coach. Couldn’t hurt recruiting for high school kids to see his face associated in the search.

    I think Gottfried could win big at UCLA. As good a recruiter as he is, he’d land top 5 classes with much less effort. Think a poor man’s Calipari.

    ^^Really, Really, Really poor.

    Calipari lands recruits that any other coach would call “program changers.” Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Anthony Davis, Kidd-Gilcrist. You could go on and on. Most coaches would be lucky to get a guy like that once in their careers. Calipari gets the biggest of the big fish. There is no comparison for that.

    Good God, “poor man’s Calapari”, that’s not a compliment in my book (i.e. its a plethora of insults wrapped into three words – wow, mildly impressive).
    The only redeeming quality to that man is he teaches defense. Though he couldn’t get anyone but NN to play it. That 3 ring circus and its ringmaster marches on.

    Add some depth to our roster, and tell anyone not excited about going for defensive player of year to sit and work on their classroom assignments (seriously). Very excited to think Gottfried stays in place and continues to push the Pack towards competing for championships!
