ACC Tournament Live Blog (First Round – Afternoon Session)

I’m giving this a shot to see if I can bring some positive mojo to the Pack by undertaking the Live Blog duties today. If the Pack loses I promise to stay away from blogging any important games ever again. I’ll miss most of the first half of the BC/GT game but if no one watches a game does it make a sound?

Thursday’s Schedule:
No. 8 Boston College vs. No. 9 Georgia Tech, noon (Ga. Tech -2 vs. BC)
No. 5 N.C. State vs. No. 12 Virginia Tech, 2:30 p.m. (NC State -11 vs. Va. Tech)
No. 7 Maryland vs. No. 10 Wake Forest, 7 p.m. (Maryland -5.5 vs. Wake Forest)
No. 6 Florida State vs. No. 11 Clemson, 9:30 p.m. (FSU -2.5 vs. Clemson)

Game 1: GT/BC

Refs: Roger Ayers, Mike Eades, and Gary Maxwell.

1st Half

15:15 – 14-0 GT.

11:41 – 20-11 GT.

07:42 – 26-13 GT.

03:38 – 31-28 GT.

After spotting GT 15 points BC has been on a tear and they are led by the ACC ROTY Olivier Hanlan who has 21pts on 7-11 FG, 4-6 3FG.

Rebounding is an issue for both teams but more so for BC. They start grabbing more defensive rebounds and cut down on the turnovers and it’ll be a total blowout.

2nd Half

15:30 – 49-37 BC

11:46 – 56-43 BC

07:27 – 66-48 BC. BC 11-20 3FG (55%). Hanlan with 35pts 12-16 FG, 7-9 3FG & 4 Rbs.

03:14 – 77-57 BC. BC 13-23 3FG (56.5%). Hanlan has 38pts. Just 2pts shy of tying the ACCT Freshman scoring record.

Final 84-64 Boston College. Faces Miami tomorrow at Noon.

Hanlan finishes with 41pts and 5 rebounds. Breaks the ACC Tournament freshmen scoring record previously held by Harrison Barnes who had 40.

Only thing BC did wrong this game was defensive rebounding. When you win by 20 does anyone really care?

Game 2: NC State/VT (tip off approximately 2:28pm)

Refs: Kersey, Nestor, Heater

Pregame Note: Brown still has his thumb taped up.

1st Half

14:04 – 14-13 VT

10:52 – 20-19 Pack

07:36 – 24-23 Pack

03:09 – 34-27 Pack

Halftime – 38-32 Pack

Both teams are shooting well with low to moderate turnovers. The Pack is dominating the glass and that’s really helping. Don’t get me started on all the fouls that haven’t been called on VT, if they had been then we could have missed even more FT’s (Pack 7-12 FT).

Leading scorers:

VT:
Jarell Eddie 10pts
Erick Green 9pts

NCSU:
Richard Howell 14pts/3rbs
CJ Leslie 9pts/5rbs/3TO

2nd Half

15:55 – 46-38 Pack

11:09 – 59-47 Pack

VT:
Eddie: 17pts
Green: 11pts/4TO

Pack:
Howell: 20pts/6rbs
CJ/TJ: 11pts each
Wood: 10pts
Brown: 9 assists

07:26 – 63-49 Pack

03:50 – 72-55 Pack

Final 80-63

VT:
Eddie: 21pts (9-14 FG)
Green: 15pts (5-19 FG)

NCSU:
Howell: 22pts (11-13 fg), 12rbs
Leslie: 15pts, 7rbs
Wood: 13pts
Warren: 13pts
Brown: 9pts, 7rbs, 12ast, 2to

The Pack had and executed a great defensive gameplan on Green. VT just didn’t have enough without Green, who still got 15pts. Need to get rest and beat the Hoos tomorrow.

    10 seconds? No.
    Walk? No.
    5 seconds? No.
    Timeout? Yes!

Huge sequence there with the wild three going in and Wood missing the chippie.

  3. vtpackfan 03/14/2013 at 3:16 PM #

Leslie had TJW open the whole friggin way.

  4. MrPlywood 03/14/2013 at 3:17 PM #

    Free. Throws.

  5. WeAreCured 03/14/2013 at 3:17 PM #

Leslie isn’t capable of dribbling, thinking, and looking around at the same time.

  6. BJD95 03/14/2013 at 3:18 PM #

Very relieved the failure to hold for last shot didn’t bite us.

I’m telling ya, the BBIQ problem on this team is Woo. Smart guy in the classroom, but not the court. An inverse SL.

  7. TheCOWDOG 03/14/2013 at 3:19 PM #

Kersey has been off the Vegas Showgirl list all year.

Some great no calls favoring the Pack. So far, so good.

Over/Under on butts in seats for FSU -Clemson tip off is 4,000.

Here is my unofficial CJ Leslie (Calvin did not show up today) halftime damage report.

4 turnovers, 2 missed free throws, one defensive lapse that led to a VT dunk, blown last possession when he had TJ Warren open but instead took a wild shot. That is 8 lost possessions. I’m thinking 10-12 points lost there. Of course his teammates stay frustrated. If you watch the go pack.com video of state’s practice yesterday, you can see Leslie loafing through the whole 55 minute session. Put him in street clothes.

Yeah, GBO a morgue even with our peeps there.

  11. wolfbuff 03/14/2013 at 3:23 PM #

Having to follow on gametracker from work. Looks like a fair to middlin defensive performance. On offense it’s mostly Calvin, with a glimpse of CJ, Howell is scoring again (but not rebounding), and Wood is still cold. Is that about right?

Also alarming are that Tyler and Rodney got 2 and 5 min, respectively. We may have a BBIQ problem on the coaching staff. We can’t play 5 guys for the entirety of 4 games in 4 days.

  12. Blackfish 03/14/2013 at 3:25 PM #

Oh lets just keep talking about how Leslie is so bad, Woo screwed the pooch, Purvis just sucks all the time, TL is no help!!! blah, blah, blah… Leslie has played as solid a first half as anyone else, why do you think Howell can get double doubles every game, I will tell you because you cant double team with Leslie on the Court…… Credit Where credit is due.

  13. BJD95 03/14/2013 at 3:26 PM #

Winning this game secures a 7 seed, probably a 6. Don’t blame MG for holding nothing back.

  14. phillypacker 03/14/2013 at 3:27 PM #

My halftime Leslie damage report: 4 turnovers, one defensive lapse leading to a VT dunk, 2 missed free throws, and blown final play in half when, with TJW wide open, Leslie throws up a wild shot. That is 7 blown possessions, maybe 10-12 points lost?

  15. packer74 03/14/2013 at 3:28 PM #

Flashes of brilliance and moments of dumbass. Same warts show up at sometime during each game: poor shot selection, missed FTs, and lapses on the defensive end. It’s frustrating to watch. Fingers crossed. Hope and pray they can survive.

  16. BJD95 03/14/2013 at 3:29 PM #

We need Woo to be hot more tomorrow. Like focusing on inside the paint this game.

“Oh lets just keep talking about how Leslie is so bad”

Please point to who is saying this.

I tire of the argumentative steam of consciousness crap made so popular by that idiot sports shock jock.

It is possible to make a point without insulting people.

  18. BrownCAT 03/14/2013 at 3:35 PM #

Does anybody know where I can find an audio or podcast of this game?

  19. Rick 03/14/2013 at 3:35 PM #

My feed has gone bad but that looked quetionable to me

  20. wufpup76 03/14/2013 at 3:35 PM #

I didn’t see that hold on the Beast … Looked like a turnover to me.

  21. vtpackfan 03/14/2013 at 3:35 PM #

The under eight sequence was important and we accomplished it with Howell resting much of it.

Start of the second half should be offensively post up Howell and try to run a double screen for Woo to get him him into the half court flow. That may pay off big in a late game situation.

Defensively, we’re winning the Eric Green battle but its been covered by VT by letting Eddie loose. I still think you stick with the plan, press more often then not, and hope Eddie hits a cold patch.

  22. BrickyardBonfire 03/14/2013 at 3:38 PM #

Too many missed offensive opportunities in the first half. Should be up by 12-15. In more than one case, one more pass would have eliminated a poor shot selection and created a layup or close range bucket. And… can we make some freak’n free throws… Keep working it inside and VT could have foul trouble in the 2nd half

  23. Wufpacker 03/14/2013 at 3:38 PM #

Sure would be nice if Woo would heat up.

  24. Wufpacker 03/14/2013 at 3:39 PM #

    Time to squash these a-holes.
