2013 ACC Tournament Bracket

If you put yourself through the pain of watching Maryland’s implosion at the hands of Virginia and ACC officiating last night then you are probably still as shell-shocked as I. It is unfathomable to conceive that #NCStateShit is such a strong force that it literally extends to when Maryland plays UVA.

Who among us still thinks that Mark Gottfried’s air headed failure to foul the ball at Maryland when State had a foul to give was a lesson in “Genius Coaching 101”?

To win the ACC Tournament, NC State will now have to find a way to navigate four consecutive games with a super thin bench in Greensboro. The good news is that we got about as good of a draw as we could’ve hoped. Good luck to the Pack!

Rick – hate has nothing to do with it.

I just choose not to forget the past when data is available and I obviously see things differently than most on this board.

If gott’s teams were known for great effort and defense I might have a different opinion of where blame lies this year.

I don’t see a horrible coach. But I do see a coach who tolerates sub-par efforts from his stars….and go figure, we got a lot of it this year.

We will probably get it next year…it is just going to be the price for having him as coach. Hopefully, we can recruit around it.

It is true you shouldnt ignore the past but I am cutting him some slack. Some bad apples that arent his doing. And left with no bench. Next year will tell me a lot about Gott. If Calvin sticks around, yikes. Dont know what you do. A cancer.

The lack of a bench hurt a lot, and most of that was due to all the transfers, but we (as in the coaching staff) seem to have been caught with our pants down when Jefferson picked Duke. Sure hope we don’t see a repeat of that this time around, though at least Randle crossed us off his list early enough we should have some fallbacks.

On the plus side, there are only three guys who even could transfer this year. Of course, any of them would be crippling blows to next year’s team. Sure hope they’re all happy, or at least happy enough to stick around.

Turgeon (who I remembered a lot of folks here were high on) seems to be a GREAT in game coach. He has also done a magical job of developing a post player (Len) whose stock has dropped and looks ill prepared for the NBA.

Sean Miller has had back to back to back top 5 recruiting classes and finished with the same conference record in a piss poor major conference.

But…but….but….”I’m willing to live with Gott and his limitations”. Good for you!

I like it that we’ll have a chip on our shoulder and bitter over the finale. We’re the best 5 seed in the ACC tourney in as long as I can remember and we can’t catch a Blue(face it-Duke) until Sunday. We’ll have a head of steam going into UVa where they will have a heck of time beating us with Zo and if (this is a BIG IF) the officials get a reminder from a middle school ref on what “over the back” means and how to call it.

Oh no-blasphemy! Good teams “adjust” to having good position and having a player climb your back for a rebound. Perhaps by getting hold of him and giving him a piggy back ride around the court would be an adequate adjustment.

Tuffy 2 posted this a couple of days ago. It bears repeating here:

Just happen to see this on an Alabama site like SFN and the irony of the description on the issues they encountered back in 2007. I know many teams have similar problems like us but it is ironic that 2 MG teams have just about the exact same issues.

The following was posted in January 2007

    Team played with no heart.

Our basketball program is arguably as good as it’s ever been. We sign highly talented basketball players Considering that Alabama is a big-time football school, this is pretty impressive. Gottfried is one heck of a recruiter, he graduates his players, and he seems like a pretty decent all-around guy.

All of that being said, I agree that he leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to pure Xs and Os basketball coaching. Gottfried apparently pays very little attention to the defensive end of the floor and sound fundamentals. Like others have pointed out, watching some of Gottfried’s teams play is like watching streetball with no discipline. A lot of our success comes from the pure talent and athleticism of our players. We regularly see poor ball movement, dangerous passes, ball-handling struggles, poor shot selection and general laziness on the defensive end of the floor. And for whatever reason, we just do not seem to defend the perimeter.

You ask any knowledgeable coach and he will tell you that CMG is terrible X and O coach and managing the flow of the game. The only time he had real coaching and toughness displayed in the team was when TR Dunn was on the bench. CMG is a recruiter and graduates his players and thats it.
    ================================================

Whether you agree or not we here at State have seen many of these same issues. I think our TR Dunn is Bobby Lutz.

I hope this does not happen here and MG learned some bench/game coaching techniques while he spent time with ESPN observing games all over the country. As the years come and go we will know for sure where we are headed with MG. Yes, he is the best coach we have had since V as there is no denying that.

All of these issues can be fixed, but the coaching staff needs to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror and resolve to do so.

I keep reading how CJ/Calvin is our “most talented” player. True, he is our most PHYSICALLY talented player, but the lack of a jump shot, low BBall IQ, and childish attitude certainly offset his physical abilities. What the NBA sees in him …. I have no clue.

  8. Texpack 03/11/2013 at 3:19 PM #

UConn won 5 games to win the Big East Tournament a couple of years ago so stop the crap about not being able to win 4 in 4 days.

….”I’m willing to live with Gott and his limitations”

Several of us had a good laugh over lunch about people slamming Coach Gott.

Guess what? If you don’t like him, then root for him even louder. Tell everyone he’s the second coming of John Wooden or someone you think is good enough for you. The best you can hope for is that he takes another job.

Cause if we fire him, we’re in deep doo folks. All we could attact last time was a fomer coach/TV guy. The next coach will be from a high school or maybe Julius Hodge.

    LOL

If there was an instant when we lost the ability to win “the whole thing”, I believe it was that “T” in Tallahassee more than that missed Maryland shot in Charlottesville yesterday.

  11. Rochester 03/11/2013 at 5:50 PM #

I haven’t seen any suggestions that Gott be fired. I have seen some legit criticism of some in-game decisions. That to me is hardly calling for the guy to be fired. I’m happy with him overall, but wouldn’t mind seeing a few improvements. Sounds like some people on here take that to mean I’d want him fired because he’s not perfect. Not at all the same thing.

    two games left.

    +1 Rochester, well said.

I kinda like the idea of us slipping to an 8-9 seed. I like us playing KY and then Gonzaga. This team will bring it for UK, and they’ll bring it for a number one seed. Then we’ll lose in the Sweet Sixteen to a 5 seed our team has never heard of and can’t get up for. Then we can spend the entire summer debating whether back-to-back Sweet 16s is progress or not.

On the not-conventional-wisdom, maybe Brown and/or Leslie come back next year and polish their games.

Both have a lot of upside and could really benefit from becoming better jump shooters.

  16. mak4dpak 03/11/2013 at 9:35 PM #

Lowe or Gott? Do the math. The real problem is Lowe players, and their basketball mentality. We can beat any team on any given day, when we play a complete game. Hopefully that begins Thursday. I say we have a fairly easy route to the championship. Go State!

  17. choppack1 03/11/2013 at 10:41 PM #

Rochester – excellent point. Saying “this is what we’ll get with Gottfried ball” – doesn’t = FIRE GOTT!!

Look – look at BAC79s comment…Read it. And say to yourself – was this really written at his last stop or was it written this year.

I see ALOT of similarities between Gott’s style and Amato’s. I see a player’s coach and I see a guy who likes and relates well to stars – and stars seem to like him too.

I’m not saying it can’t work out for him here in Raleigh. What I am saying is that HE OWNS THIS SEASON. He chose to play Lorenzo Brown extensive minutes in the first part of the season while Lorenzo wasn’t giving 100% while Tyler Lewis sat on the bench. Then, after Lewis proved himself, he chose to play 40 minutes vs. FSU. (I actually think Brown’s effort really took a good turn vs. Wake, and he was playing one of his best 1st half’s all year when he got hurt vs. UVa.)

With Leslie – he could have played TDT more – and maybe he doesn’t transfer. Maybe if Painter didn’t think all of his minutes were going to Jefferson, he would have hung around…Who knows?

That’s water under the bridge. At the end of the day – I’m not going to say we didn’t have a bench when the season started – because what happened with Lewis has proven to me that Gott wants a certain player on the floor…effort be damned.

However, I think he deserves credit for his actions with Warren and Purvis he both appear to be growing into their roles.

Hey – you take the good with the bad…and generally, you know what you get when look at someone’s past:
    * TOB didn’t win championships at BC and go figure, he didn’t win any at NC State.
    * Sidney Lowe was an awful NBA coach and a bad college basketball coach.
    * Lee Fowler was a stupid, lazy AD and he made an incredibly stupid hire for basketball coach.
    * And hey, go figure, Gott’s team has been poor defensively and has looked terribly uninspired at times this year.

We’ll see how it all ends right? I mean, if we have to “tolerate” this kind of stuff throughout regular season, but have post-season success, I won’t care. The beautiful thing about basketball is that you basically have 3 shots at having some meaningful success- regular season, conference tournament and NCAA tournament…You do well in 2 of those things, and it’s an enjoyable year. You do great in of those 2 (conference tourney or NCAA) – and it’s a great year.

My greater point is that this ain’t the players fault. We’ve a coach who believes in sticking with his guys. If you ain’t in that rotation – tough. If you are – you are probably talented – and you probably like playing for him, because you’ll get some minutes and very loose leash.

I love the passion and gritty edge our fanbase carries and at the same time cannot stand all the Negative Nelly-ism. The sky is the limit, folks. We’ve seen ugly ball, but it’s not like this team has never put it together. Go Pack!

  19. packattack13 03/12/2013 at 12:28 AM #

A lot of hate on some of gotts coaching particularly the end of the Maryland game. I could be wrong but I would be willing to bet he told the players to foul there they just didn’t foul. And I think as a good coach he’s not going to throw his players under the bus and say that. Personally the only problem I have with his coaching is I’d like to go 8 deep and see more tyler Lewis. That doesn’t mean less zo. I think we look great when they are both on the court with zo running fast breaks and transitions and when it’s not there the pull back to tyler for the half court. He definitely knew what he was doing in recruiting when he got purvis. He’s the future leader of this team. I believe this is the first team to win 4 games in the acc tournament.

  20. BAC79 03/12/2013 at 8:36 AM #

Constructive criticism is not hating on coach Gott or the team. I simply want them to do what any good business organization would do. Analyze your situation, find the problems, propose solutions, implement solutions = fix problems.

It has been an interesting year, from WAY TOO HIGH preseason expectations to great wins over Duke and UNC, to losing at Wake (wtf?). I like this team, like the coaches and look forward to the next few years. Gott not only can coach, he has an excellent supporting staff both inside and outside the program.

I’m really gonna miss Wood, Howell, Lo, and yes, Leslie. At the same time, Tyler, Purvis, Warren, etc. give me a lot of hope for the program going forward.

This team could go really deep in both tourneys, and there’s no reason to think they will bomb. Even losing to FSU (coached by Mr. Underrated, Leonard Hamilton), the Pack is trending well. Long story short, I’m grateful to Gott and Co. for making me give a shit again.

Well if Lutz leaves, talk to T.R. Dunn. He’s bounced around as an assistant at numerous NBA/college places. Think he’s with the T-Wolves now.
