State survives Virginia Tech, ACC officiating blunders

NC State had to go to overtime because the Atlantic Coast Conference officials couldn’t monitor the free throw lane one of the most simple and basic rules of basketball.

In the end, the Wolfpack defeated Virginia Tech 90-86 to continue to fight to be positioned for an important #4 or #3 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. State continues to be ranked in the Top 20 of most computer systems, including the RPI where the Wolfpack also has played one of the ten toughest schedules in the country at this point of the season.

The following two videos were a couple of the more fun calls (or no calls) from the ACC officials today that have already hit the internet — the second of which is everyone’s favorite and a perfect example of how/why Richard Howell has been so foul plagued throughout his career.

Fran fraschilla is a blow hard.

The no call on Wood’s obvious travel was also nuts. But I guess by that time…they really owed us one. I yelled at my tv after the “foul” on Howell. That was absurd.

  3. Wulfpack 02/16/2013 at 4:16 PM #

That should have been called and we should have won in regulation. However, the flip side is we shot 43 free throws and VT only 7, so it’s not like we were jobbed with the calls. Consistent calls? No, and never has been. One sided? No way.

One of these days I hope to be more than just relieved after a game. Beats pissed off, but still, we should kick the hell out of the last place team when we have 6 days off to prepare. Sometimes I wonder if there was something to TDT’s tweet. We had the talent to be picked #6 in the nation before the season and we have exactly one ACC win by double digits. We should be running some of these teams off the court. I don’t get it.

I still can understand why we are so poor defensively. Is it players or coaches. Both?

Gott needs to hire a Duke assistant and let him take over the defensive coaching.

We just won’t go very far due to weak defensive.

I haven’t figured out if we were over-rated and are at most a top 30 team or if this is mostly on the coaches. He has 4 almost seniors on the team and they play like a bunch of babies at times.

I hope that the soft coaching and soft defensive and one on one basketball is mostly a result of the uniqueness of this team and lack of depth.

Why did it take an injury for them to figure out Tyler can play?

Other than that, coach could do alot of things wrong and still be much better than we have had in a few decades.

My sentiments exactly Rochester. I don’t get it either.

I think the officials might have fired up a blunt before the game no doubt, but their ass-hattery definitely wasn’t one sided.

Howell’s third foul was the worst of them I thought, but there were plenty both ways.

Another double-double for King Richard, Calvin was one board shy of his own double-double, and the Pack had six guys in double figures scoring. But game ball has to go to Wood.

Dude had ice water in his veins today.

Someone needs to send out an APB on Purvis before we’re back to a 6-man rotation.

Again with TDT’s tweet, holy chit.

“NC State had to go to overtime because the Atlantic Coast Conference officials couldn’t monitor the free throw lane one of the most simple and basic rules of basketball.”

Really?, You believe it came down to that? How about Lo and Wood missing FT’s when any one of them would have, should have, iced the game.

That we continue to let the dregs of the league even be in it at the end of these games is more basic. We play just good enough to win, not like a good team poised for the upper echelon. We make too many mistakes. It will cost us before it’s over.

The one stat that jumps out at me from the box score: Marshall Wood’s flat top had 16 rebounds (at least according to ESPN.com). That’s CJ’s guy. That should not happen.

If the ACC doesn’t suspend Eades for the call on Howell then they can’t even fake integrity. That was blatant incompetence.

“I still can(‘t) understand why we are so poor defensively. Is it players or coaches. Both?”

I asked the exact same question during the in-game venting/blogging. For the life of me, I can’t figure out why we are still so bad defensively. I really don’t think it is the coaching. Surely at some point the players have to take responsibility for their play. But heck, what do I know. Maybe it is the coaching and everybody we play knows exactly how to attack us for maximum benefit.

I keep hoping this team is going to gel and develop a killer instinct. The team has had plenty of time to acclimate to the fact that they are no longer perceived as a top 10 championship caliber team. That should really piss them off, but they seem ok with playing down to their competition and squeaking by. Still, being the hunted is different and necessitates a change in psychology. Hopefully that can take place sooner rather than later. I still think we can go very far in the dance, but I also think we can get knocked off early due to the lack of intensity. And defensively we are a nightmare. I do not expect that to change. We just don’t have it.

“Again with TDT’s tweet, holy chit.” Maybe State would be better off with TDT as coach. 😛

I think our problem is that the player that many here and in the media deemed as god’s gift to basketball is at best our 3rd best player and maybe 4th or 5th best player depending on the night.

He still has no problem dribbling into a double team and leading to a turnover even though his ball handling and jump shot are not good.

I didn’t see the game, only got to listen. Seeing that foul on Rich…yikes. That’s absurd. I can understand the travel to some extent because hey, who calls travels anymore? But that’s a textbook case of over-the-back.

I had a thought at the end of the game. If you’re in a situation where the guy has to miss the free throw and get the rebound, why wouldn’t you (as the defense) commit a lane violation every single time? If they call it, they’re just going to have to keep calling it until the guy makes it, which is what you want. If they don’t call it, you get better rebounding position.

  18. MrPlywood 02/16/2013 at 4:42 PM #

Since I didn’t have a stream, I didn’t see the FT violation (or lack thereof) referred to in the tweet. When did that happen?

  19. FunPack 02/16/2013 at 4:42 PM #

“Maybe State would be better off with TDT as coach. ”

LOL. You want all of State nation to have a stroke? 😉

  20. TLeo 02/16/2013 at 4:43 PM #

I didn’t see what happened with the lane violation because I got fed up and quit watching early on in the second half. I agree that this team should have never been put in the position at the end if they would just come out and play with some effort and determination and stop playing down to the other team’s level. It is hard to be happy about a win when it is the same old crap game after game.
VT hit an amazing number of 3 pointer shots but as always…this team doesn’t seem to give a damn about playing defense and lets a bottom team and a couple of it’s players have career games once again. Look for a very early exit from both the acc and ncaa this year.

  21. FunPack 02/16/2013 at 4:44 PM #

The FT violation occurred with about 5 seconds left in regulation. Allowed them to tie the game with just over 3 seconds left.

  22. Wulfpack 02/16/2013 at 4:47 PM #

VT hit the threes as they were wide open. It’s the same story over and over again, every team. We are not getting out on shooters. No idea why. That is on the coaches IMHO. If the players aren’t getting the message, find a different way to teach it. Otherwise, it will just continue.

  23. MrPlywood 02/16/2013 at 4:49 PM #

Thx. IIRC, State was called for that sometime last year, and I have to admit that I was not aware of the rule. Looks like some of the refs are still in the dark.

I was torn between whether or not to foul in the first place. VT seemed to hit 3s at will though, and it did take a bad call to get them the tie.

I do give the Pack big credit for the 14-0 run. Granted, they dug their own hole, but they stepped up and eventually got the win.

  24. JohnGalt78 02/16/2013 at 4:49 PM #

Just home from the game. Worst officiating I’ve ever seen on tv or in person. Sometimes it hard to pick up on all the bad calls when you’re at the arena….but not today. Heck, my poor wife, who DID NOT want to go out in this weather, and closes her eyes during stressful periods in the game, saw multiple bad calls, no calls and wrong calls.

Tech played really hard. They are not as bad as their record. To bad the officials made this game famous….for poor officiating.

It seemed to me that we started playing better after CJ got his technical. Did anyone else notice this?
