State beats Clemson

It was plenty ugly, especially the first half when State executed poorly and played uninspired. But the Pack ended a three-game losing streak (and five-of-seven skid) on Scott Wood’s three-point game-winner with one second remaining. Richard Howell was again a beast with another double-double (16/11) and although it won’t show up in the box score, his screen set up Wood’s game winner.

State improves to 6-5 (5th place) in the league and has kept itself off the bubble and still in position to avoid Thursday in Greensboro.

When was the last time we were on the winning side of a game winner?

Also…let’s be real, packalum is dead wrong but let’s not act like he is being any more disrespectful than a lot of people were about Lowe when he was still our coach.

    Wufpacker +1

    Tries to do too much.

^^^ Yes, he was a horrible coach in many ways. But the man wasn’t stupid. We gave a NCAA banner hanging in our arena that we don’t gave without Lowe’s understanding of the game of basketball.

As one who has frequently criticized the in-game and end-of-game coaching this season, let me echo the earlier statement that this was the best job Gottfried and Staff have done all season on the last play of the game. Well done coaches, well done WooD. Great call, great execution, great result.

Feels good to finally turn an L into a W at the end of the game instead of the other way around. Get healthy Zo and rest up this week Pack, it’s time to catch fire and re-assume the role of the “team nobody wants to face come tournament time”.

Holy crap did the refs just swallow their whistles for Duke and screw BC over in the process. Who knew you could chop block in end of game situations?

BC down one with the ball, miss the first shot. BC player (don’t know who it was, sorry) rebounds the ball and has a shot at the putback and Quinn Cook literally takes him out from behind at the knees. No call.

    Wow.

Then Cook has the cajones to walk around BC’s court with his little “We’re #1” finger in the air. What a douchebag.

Foose….what would cartman say? That’s debatable.

A banner and no degree. He was there for basketball. Most players pick up both if they are there after 4 years in SOMETHING.

I’ll always appreciate his PG role in our national championship but that was Valvano’s team not Sid’s. Sid had an amazing year. I am fond of him for that.

  7. Wufpacker 02/10/2013 at 7:40 PM #

    ^ Suck my balls.

And no, that’s not a request…that’s what I think Cartman would say. 😀

EDIT – OK, I feel really sorta bad about that now. But since it’s still got me giggling too I just can’t bring myself to delete it. But Statefans, do feel free to break out the white out on this one.

    Wufpacker- that’s just funny.

    It’s a sensitive subject.

Lowe was good at cultivating friends, which is how he got the job.

(I’m going to leave this alone now.)

  9. Wufpacker 02/10/2013 at 7:47 PM #

Glad you think so. It’s a bit over the line considering your gender, but that’s what also makes it funny (at least in my sick and sometimes unintentionally chauvinistic opinion).

I knew you were a good sport though. But still feel kinda bad. But admittedly, also still giggling. 😀

  10. Wufpacker 02/10/2013 at 7:48 PM #

^^ OK, that’s being a good sport above and beyond the call.

    Very nicely done, btw.

Don’t be too hard on CJL, I think his “hero ball” is part of our offense. We run clear outs for our athletic 4 and let him go 1 on 1. If you don’t watch the NBA it looks like hero ball but it’s really an offensive set. It’s a large part of the reason I think we will get Julius Randle.

It’s not like he’s a ball hog. He gives the ball up if he isn’t in the right position and even over passes in the interior on occasion. In the beginning of the season he was letting the game come to him and I hear coach was all over him for it. If you listened to CJ’s post game after he went for 30+ against the Bonnies he said as much. He said that he would pass out of double teams in practice and on tape and Gott would scream at him “Be aggressive! You have to be more aggressive!” He has the green light to go 1 on 1 and even 1 on 2.

It’s not beautiful to watch when he is getting stuffed but he is acting on orders.

    You’re on fire!

Can’t believe that about Cook….I can believe that about the refs.

    Have a good evening! 🙂

Duke game was ugly and BC probably should have gone to the line….but how many times have we seen an ACC ref blow the whistle in the last few seconds. Sure didn’t in College Park or the PNC which could have impacted our L’s. Somebody’s NOT happy….the guys that bet the 11 point line (Duke over BC).

Similarly, I did NOT realize we were a 2 point favorite. Oh well.

FINALLY…..did anyone catch the Lady Pack’s game this afternoon?

    From Go.Pack.com

“RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women’s basketball team had five double-figure scorers and recorded its largest margin of victory in an ACC game in 12 years, en route to a 79-45 victory over Clemson Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.

The Wolfpack has now won four of its last five games with six contests remaining in the regular season.”

Obviously someone or something has lit a fire in the bloomers of the gals…..WOW….GREAT WIN.

Don’t know if this will keep up? Don’t know what will (or will not) happen to Ms. Harper…..but you got to love the spirit. Have only been to a few games this year….but enjoyed them and appreciate the spirit of the players.

    Think – agree. Good point.

  15. Wufpacker 02/10/2013 at 7:58 PM #

In Cook’s defense, I don’t think he did it on purpose but was just being overzealous and couldn’t stop. But it was still a horrible no call.

And beating BC by one, especially given the way it ended, is no cause for strutting around with one’s finger in the air.

Thinkpack17 – if you want some real entertainment, go digging through the archives here for games during the Herb and the Lowe eras and read the game threads. I think we all made comments in them that were incredibly tough on both. And I think at times many of us called into question the coach’s intelligence. Hell, there’s even articles from that time that reflect it.

Maybe Cook was just emphasizing the margin of victory. “We’re 1 point better than BC! Woo-hoo!”

It was quite a scrum there, but that BC shot was so brutal they didn’t deserve to get a rebound.

  19. JeremyH 02/10/2013 at 8:39 PM #

The Lowe era was a mistake made by our former AD. I don’t see anything positive coming from critiquing Lowe, and its remarks like those that justly attract the label “lunatic fringe”. Lets not forget its players he recruited that made the sweet sixteen run, which has made the transition to the new regime more seamless.

Wuffette – the way I have always seen it – this is a team of introverts. Unsurprisingly, as a blogger, I get introverts because I am one.

Usually, there are a handful of outspoken guys who can “rally the troops” – but every single one of our key guys is quiet. I really don’t think it’s a lack of intensity, caring, etc. Just an odd coincidence that we have so many introverts.

I think that can still work, it will just be a dynamic that will seem odd to the observer from time to time.

  21. Wulfpack 02/10/2013 at 8:58 PM #

Duke had to fly to Boston today due to the weather. Just a little context. Like us, not pretty but a road win.

  22. sjmac11 02/10/2013 at 9:45 PM #

wulpack…are you kidding me or yourself? you do what you can to win on the road???? Don’t think Coach K draws up on the board when he travels anywhere outside Durham….ok guys this is what we need to do to win on the road, mope around, act like you could care less and remember you are the greatest thing ever so don’t even act like you care. Holy Lord we are in stage 4 and the experimental treatment is not working.

FACT: we will be an early out in the ACC tourney unless we play Duke or UNC first.

FACT: we have been viscously reminded…hey jack asses, this is still the same team that crawled in the NCAA tourney last year.

It is an absolute shame CJ Leslie can’t compete like Richard Howell. I wish Richard was a junior so CJ could see wolf pack nation begging him to stay and care less if CJ goes.

  23. JeremyH 02/10/2013 at 9:54 PM #

Maybe Brown should stay on for his senior year, we have a new “fire and ice” thing just developing.

  24. JohnGalt78 02/10/2013 at 10:01 PM #

Best defensive play of the game was Gott calling the TO as CJ was crashing down the court.

  25. Tau837 02/10/2013 at 10:30 PM #

“He gives the ball up if he isn’t in the right position”

Rarely. There was one occasion in the second half today when Leslie got double teamed with Lewis wide open at the 3 point line right in Leslie’s line of sight, and, rather than pass it, he chose to try to go 1 on 2 and missed the forced shot. That’s not the only time today, but it was a really blatant example.
