State loses to Wake.

Ugly.

After trailing 47-35 at half and then 53-42 with 18:09 to play, Wake trounced State with an aggressive, efficient 40-19 surge over the next 14:19 and led 82-72 at the under four-minute TV timeout. State had multiple opportunities to tie (and even win) in the final minute, but missed three-of-four free throws and then missed two field goals (on one of which Leslie was clearly fouled, no call).

This just hasn’t been a good team since beating Duke (and it certainly hasn’t played with any consistency). Blame the officials if you want, but Wake was clearly the better team tonight and deserved to win. And that’s damn tragic.

Box Score (ESPN).

Officiating was bad, but this one is on the guys. The seniors lack leadership, and sick of Leslie and his half ass play on the court. Certainly not living up to his expectations. The whole team seemed to build the season on Duke, and have not showed up since. Bet we don’t lead the nation in FG percentage anymore. Gott has got to get these guys head straight. Saturday can not go down as a loss. But though the loss was inexcusable, I have to agree, the ACC powers that scheduled a Sunday nite game, then Tues nite, did us no favors. The guys built the big lead, but ran out of gas from there on. Glad the boys from WS will get to come to the PNC, payback should be hell.

    No comment other than WTF.

I don’t know what I’m more sick of. The constant way we play so inconsistently or the ridiculous excuses we give these guys. Trap game, bull sh*t idiots!!!! Only teams that compete 90% of the time get that. Miami has won 4 road games….without their best player=PLAYING HARD AND PLAYING TOGETHER. There is not another team in this conference with the “talent” we have that will drop as many turds as we do. I’ve said this time and time and time and time and time again on here…….

CJ Leslie could give a crap less, most of the time.

Richard Howell is playing his a** off but he misses tons of gimmies.

Scott Wood seems, I don’t know what in the hell happens to him.

Lorenzo, just not quite as advertised.

Trap games, teams getting up for us, blah, blah, blah. I’m nearly convinced we’re just no better than anyone else in the middle of the pack. The team deserves to see lots of empty seats against our most hated rival Sat. night. Enjoy watching another school storm the court???? Don’t worry, it’ll likely be the last time.

    BYE BYE TOP 25!!!!!

We obviously don’t give a crap about the regular season. Players must be focused on the NCAA tournament at this point. I can’t see any other reason why they don’t bring it every night. I haven’t been as upset with our team since the Lowe days. Absolutely unacceptable.

  5. Tuffy2 01/22/2013 at 10:50 PM #

What is up with CJ? He decides to play ball with 2 or 3 minutes left in the game! I don’t want to here about the 4 fouls because it goes way deeper than that only. I am sorry to say this, but if I am Richard Howell I’m in Calvins face the last 3 games.

CJ gets his 3rd foul and Gott leaves him in the game. I have to question that because he has to know his players better than that. CJ did not waste anytime picking up his 4th foul as if he wanted to sit on the bench.

When is this team going to understand they are now the hunted not the hunters anymore. They are going to get everybody’s best shot. I am sure the coaches have told them this.

Yes the refs were bad, but Wake was the better team tonight. They outhustled us and wanted it more than we did. No excuse for playing such poor defense, foul trouble or not. Maybe this will get their attention and they will show up against UNX Saturday night.

Excising the lethargy and lack of mental toughness that plague our team from five years of mismanagement is a task I think Mr. Gottfried is up to. However, simply pulling up the offending weed is usually not always the end of it, as its seeds lie dormant ready to spring forth upon a moments notice. I fear until those weeds have been pulled up by the root, the earth tilled and those how have been infected with this malaise are gone; we will continue to see debacles such as was exhibited this evening by the massive laying of a big fat turd.

It’s not that we just miss Paint, but in combination with not getting Jefferson or the junior college kid, in combination with not getting real minutes from Lewis. We are not more than 6 deep, and this is exactly the part of the schedule that kills us in. Say what you want about hustle, but I’m sore for a couple days after playing in a tough strenuous contest like that. Also I expect Warren and Purvis to be hitting the wall a little bit by now.

Now that I got that out of the way, this was a complete ungluing to witness in the second half. After we fouling on several possession in a row in the 2nd half, we simply could not prevent them from scoring, they were literally scoring at will. I witnessed Wood have 2 three pointers blocked ??, and Brown losing composure.

We had an opportunity to wipe all that out at the end. We crawled back by pounding it inside to Leslie. But once we get close somehow we go back to Wood to jack up more threes? Wood is great, but he sure is streaky. We airballed a inside free throw-ish jumpshot (I don’t know who took it) and simply could not find the basket the possession need to tie or go up. During that stretch Leslie went 1-4 from the line; the second pair barely missing on an And-1. Leslie almost brought up all the way back but couldn’t knock down the free ones.

This one sucks. Our freshman are much better at home than on the road, as one might expect. We have to find a way to defend while staying out of foul trouble, in that respect it felt like the Duke game last year. I did not like the officiating in that respect. They dictated the game, and allowed for more aggressive defense on our end but not on our defensive end.

Must have a short memory and get ready for UNX.

@tuckerdorm1983, this is exactly why I’m not upset with Gott, and I implore anyone who is mad at him to keep this in mind. He has only one class of recruits on the team (who I think look promising) and one player from the Lowe era who has “bought in” to his system completely (Howell). Lowe tried to recruit talent, but never concentrated on making a team. That is evident on nights like this. I see Gott correcting this as the entire team truly becomes “his.”

We lost because of free throws, plain and simple. We played through all of the foul trouble and still had a chance to win, but couldn’t make the free ones. I know 2 games in 3 days is hard, especially with the back end of it against a rival. I like how we fought in this one. We have fought in every game since the Oklahoma State game. I think we are preparing ourselves well for the tourney. We have got to make free throws though.

  11. blpack 01/22/2013 at 11:23 PM #

Don’t know what will get these guy attention. We are not good enough to mail it in. We have to play hard like everybody else. We play no defense and that loses games. We need to refocus our priorities. We seem to be drifting with no leadership.

  12. wolffpride 01/22/2013 at 11:24 PM #

We did not lose because of the refs, this is a fact. But they sure didn’t help. I wonder how many of State’s fouls came form Ted Valentine’s whistle? I need to go over the tape. The no call at the end was just icing. First Michigan and now this. CJ must have slept with his wife or something. Maybe he steals his newspaper…

  13. fullmoon1 01/22/2013 at 11:49 PM #

Eas, I would say #1 is because of 2.

  14. fullmoon1 01/22/2013 at 11:53 PM #

Why is there such an aversion to saying we lost bc of the refs? The refs have tainted the collective basketball mental capacity of this team. They play tentatively to keep from getting foul trouble. They are wore down from literally being tackled play after play. The poor officiating has ruined acc basketball. Officials are not held accountable and can’t be consistent from play to play. I for one would love to see gott get a tech or two in making this point.

  15. MrPlywood 01/22/2013 at 11:56 PM #

The team seems to be stuck in a “win by a little, lose by a little” purgatory. Not a good thing with a tough 4 game stretch in front of them. I’ll say it again – this team controls its own destiny. Winning 3 out of those 4 is doable, but so is losing all 4.

  16. fullmoon1 01/23/2013 at 12:39 AM #

Thank goodness I do t actually know anyone that pulls for wake, or tomorrow would be humiliating. Did anyone notice there was a couple of “fans” who rushed the court wearing baby blue? Lol it’s odd when people who are rushing the court are older fans of another school.

  17. JeremyH 01/23/2013 at 1:09 AM #

fullmoon1: what can you do? certainly is not a recruiting tool.

  18. mak4dpak 01/23/2013 at 3:31 AM #

Senior leadership, and we are failing miserably. We can’t have our best players at the FT lines missing shots that can change the outcome of the game, or shooting up 3s that aren’t even close. We beat ourselves in this one, and deserve what we got. When we learn to play every game like the Duke game, we will be successful. Until then, more of this.

There are acceptable losses. There are understandable losses. There are even necessary losses (ones that wake up a good team who’s just going through the motions). This was none of those. This was a BAD loss. Maryland was understandable. Ok St. maybe was necessary – early in the season, non-conf, wake-up call, etc. A loss at Duke while giving a good effort is usually acceptable depending on how everything else is going. In a season when you’re trying to win the conference, losing to a lower-tier team, no matter how much potential they have, how much of an effort they give, etc. cannot happen.
I agree the refs had a big effect on this game, though. For example, you can’t blame the refs for all 4 of CJ’s fouls, but even a few of them cause him to necessarily play differently. There was no form of defense he could play near the basket other than try to swat the ball after it had been put up (hence two goal tends). That ain’t the type of defense that wins championships. Anyone who wants to partly blame the refs for that is justified, IMO. Lorenzo’s whacky turnovers, though? The guy did have a bunch of assists, but several inopportune TO’s too. What else, though? Wood’s shot wasn’t falling, but you can’t necessarily blame him for that; that happens. The defensive effort was seriously lacking, but it seemed that it was a result of the fouls and the way the game was being called. Not saying there wasn’t something they could have done differently, but it certainly had an effect.

It’s difficult to isolate a single problem on this team, but if I had to pick one glaring issue its the point guard play. Lorenzo Brown certainly has shown flashes of greatness, but he has so many wasted possessions that either result in a turnover or poor shots. We really need a steady hand at that position to make sure the offense is properly run and always goes through Leslie in our sets. That doesn’t happen consistently. Brown thinks he’s Rondo and he isn’t. Needs to be less free-wheeling and more disciplined, structured in the half court. Defensively, he displays terrible habits that cause problems for the four guys behind him. Watch him and you will never see him in a proper defensive stance. He literally stands straight up, legs never bent, arms by his side. Consequently, he gets beat off the dribble and our help side has to attack the dribbler resulting in easy dump off assists for dunks/layups, or even worse – fouls. We gave up 90 to Wake and they didnt get many transition points. They just destroyed us off dribble penetration.

In fairness, and the other contributing factor in the problems out of the PG position, is that Brown is getting no help from Tyler Lewis in the way if rest minutes. Lets face it, Lewis is awful and anyone who argues that he will get better with time is seeing something I am not. He is what he is, a short, slow, spastic player with a slow release. I’d say he is much closer to Mike O’Donnell than John Crotty. My guess is the staff has seen enough to encourage a transfer. We’d be better to give the nod to next year’s freshman, and try to get a bigger backup PG, perhaps from Juco, who can give us 8-10 minutes per game without being a total liability like Lewis will forever be.

The point guard position is what ails this team.

After watching last years run, I thought Gottfried had a chance to be a great coach or at least a really good coach. After watching his losses this year Gottfried is a OK coach. he will never be REALLY good. The games he has lost is his lack of being able to make changes during the game. If you can’t beat Wake with this team, as a coach you need to go stand in front of the mirror for a few hours.

  22. Ransompack 01/23/2013 at 4:59 AM #

I am so disappointed. After 25 years of living off the crumbs of carolina and Duke we finally have a first class team.
Sure the refs were horrible but it doesn’t matter if you can’t hit free throws.

Only against Duke have we put together two good halves.

They quit. Got a good lead and quit.

  23. wolfmanmat 01/23/2013 at 6:03 AM #

Lorenzo ain’t the issue. He’s a very solid point guard. His defense is a bit questionable, but he always accounts for more offense than his opposite. The issue is interior defense and rebounding. You can’t let a freshman out-man you in the post.

  24. TLeo 01/23/2013 at 6:08 AM #

I totally agree that these refs were beyond bad—we get assaulted and no call and then we are called for a touch foul on the other end. I miss the days of stormin Norman— he would light up these so called refs for their bull and I wish we would see that from Gott. Having said that, we still should have won this game and just missed shot after shot and missed free throws.
Something is just really wrong with this team. With a couple starters on the bench in the first half we increased the lead and then with them back in for the second half….total suck.

  25. Wulfpack 01/23/2013 at 6:10 AM #

I think it is certainly fair to cast some blame on the coaching staff, but at some point in time, your guys have to actually step up on the floor. I am not seeing that this year. Very little leadership. Leslie is not a leader, and it does not look like Brown is either. If Wood isn’t hitting from the outside, or drawing a bunch of fouls, his impact is marginalized.

Some of us saw these issues creeping up in the early ACC season, but we still found a way to win. But it does not seem like a bandaid can fix these problems. We aren’t as good as I thought we’d be, which is disappointing. It seems we kind of shut down and quit improving after the Duke game, at least that is the perception. The good news is we have time to figure all of this out. The bad news is it better happen pretty quick. We cannot afford to lose to UNC Saturday. That would put us much closer to bubble land, which is just unbelievable but true.
