Can State break a streak at BC today?

Mark Gottfried did a lot of things right last year in his first season as NC State’s Head Basketball Coach. One thing that I liked is that he went out and took care of business by beating down programs that we SHOULD beat but have failed to exert dominance over in recent years. One of those programs is most definitely Boston College.

Gottfried did exactly what he should last year by posting a 3-0 record over the Eagles, including a 21 point win in the first round of the ACC Tournament (where the Wolfpack program historically excels the most).

Today, Coach Gottfried’s Wolfpack has a chance to continue to “get back” some of our lost glory by stopping an awful losing streak highlighted
here.

1. Packing for a road trip

N.C. State opened its ACC schedule with home wins in 2011 and 2012, but when’s the last time it started league play with a road victory?

The answer is the 1997-98 season, when C.C. Harrison hit a 14-foot runner as time expired in overtime to give the Wolfpack a 71-69 upset of 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech.

In the next 14 seasons, N.C. State was 0-7 in league openers away from home. That list features losses at Duke (1998-99), Virginia (2000-01), Miami (2004-05), Virginia (2006-07), North Carolina (2007-08), Clemson (2008-09) and Wake Forest (2009-10).

Things have changed a lot in Wolfpack hoops in the last year. Breaking this ignominious road-opener streak will be another step on the way back to legitimacy.

Light blue shirts on the HC, even with a red stripped tie. Wonder WHY we are on a cold streak….?

    The answer is obvious….

As the writer said dressed in total read (BBVD’s, actually Jockey Shorts included)….I look like a Jimmy V ad with my “slick/silk) warm up pants, Gottfried red socks and a red T (beat FSU) and a red pullover.

    GO PACK…

PS….despite the clamoring (I’m sure is coming) demand, I will NOT post pictures of the outfit on the internet.

    NCSU 78 – BC 73

    >whew!<

Whew is right. That was ugly but a win is a win.

we barely played well enough to win against a team we should beat easily. Leslie went AWOL. Wood decided to play the last 5 mins. Howell could not hit a shot from point blank. Brown played his game and Purvis was outstanding. What we need is every body playing all the time. Today’s ho hum playing did not inspire me, except to say we know what to do in close games.

Not winning on the road in an ACC opener for 15 years makes this an even better win. Not pretty, but winning is very nice.

  7. DC_wolf 01/05/2013 at 6:56 PM #

I won’t even bring up that BC already has losses to Dayton, Bryant (?), and Harvard – uh, nevermind… But I agree – a road conference win is a road conference win, take it, move on, bring on Ga. Tech.

  8. Wulfpack 01/05/2013 at 6:58 PM #

I will take it. A LOT of work to do, but I will take it.

  9. Hawkeye Whitney 01/05/2013 at 6:58 PM #

And Scott Wood didn’t just decide to play the last 5 minutes. He was GREAT the last 5 minutes.

I was not trying really to “knock wood”. Get it? knock wood.

Once again, this team plays down to the level of the competition.

Is it Gott, or the head cases he inherited from Sid ? No way this team should’ve struggled against a team that lost to Bryant.

Really tired of the no-shows by Leslie. Either play hard or walk away, CJ – let Calvin come back and take your place !

And Wood is MIA for 36 minutes ??? WTF ?

Under previous coaching staffs we lose that kind of ugly game. So I’ll take that W.

  15. mak4dpak 01/05/2013 at 10:33 PM #

It was an ugly win, and nearly a loss against a young BC team. Thanks alot to Wood and Leslie for playing like crap and contributing nothing, except for of course Wood at the end. These guys can really be lazy on the court, and come out sluggish. That will have to stop if we want a championship.

    StateFansNation,

I may be wrong…and I checked the old records….here is what I found. If I made a mistake, I apologize. I pulled the archives from the GOPack site and StatSheet. I MIGHT have missed a game, but I did verify on the FSU and the UVA sites that we won on the dates listed.

    11/12 – WON (WF)

    Lowe – 0 – 5

    09/10 – LOST
    08/09 – LOST
    07/08 – LOST
    06/07 – LOST

    Sendek 3 – 7
    05/06 – LOST
    04/05 – LOST
    03/04 – WON FSU – Jan 11, 2004

Maravich, Sloan, Valvano and Robinson LOST their FIRST AWAY ACC Game. I THOUGHT that I remembered something about that from the commentators last year.

The StatSheet is MUCH easier to read….

Gottfried has some interesting FIRSTS……to say the least.

Yes, it was ugly but it is a W. At the end of the year, they dont look at ugly, they look at W’s and L’s.

On a positive note, CJ was a no show, Wood only played the last 5 minutes, and Howell was off as tuckerdorm pointed out. In years past, if someone has an off game, we lose. This is very encouraging (and helps BC is bad) that when 3 guys are off, we still find a way to pull it out. We easily could have blown it at the end and I am sure teams of years past would have walked away with an L in today’s game.

We are 1-0 in conference with a ROAD WIN!

  18. tractor57 01/06/2013 at 3:34 AM #

BC’s record before this game was pretty bad but in this game hard to say they were bad. This is more like the ACC I knew years ago with road games always being difficult. In previous years we would have lost with so many weapons misfiring. Ugly win (and lots of issues for the coaching staff to deal with) but a win regardless.

  19. tuckerdorm1983 01/06/2013 at 6:34 AM #

the truly bright spot was the coming of age of Purvis. Teams now need to honor his three point shot. I just see him getting better and better and better as he acclimates to the college game

  20. packalum44 01/06/2013 at 6:45 AM #

This is the first team in 20 years with the guts and mental fortitude to win a game like this.

We shouldn’t have won this game considering how we played, how well BC played and the fact the zebras did everything in their power to throw the game in the final 60 seconds. 3 awful calls against State. THREE!! In the crucial final minute of a tight road game.

A Sendek coached team would have shit the bed so badly it would burn through any mattress cover and ruined the mattress. A Lowe team would have lost by 20.

Great win. All teams have bad games. Just don’t make it a trend.

  21. sjmac11 01/06/2013 at 8:12 AM #

The talk is repetitive on here….lot’s of work to do, need everyone to play together……be done with it. Here’s the deal, these kids are super talented when they want to be. That’s the problem, something just ain’t right “upstairs” with these kids and until the Lowe head game kids are gone this is going to be the standard for us. Scott Wood doesn’t score until the last when????? really?????

    Gotts kids: A+++++++++

Lowe is the infection that won’t heal….like herpes….sometimes it’s there, sometimes it’s not, but always lurking. Gott’s freshman are not infected. They are always playing at 100%, positive attitudes, excited yet controlled, hard defenders if not a little inexperienced, hustling, scraping, etc.

Sometimes the upperclassmen play like that. And when they do, we win big. Hopefully we can avoid “outbreaks” as the season intensifies. I believe the sleepwalking problem is on the coach. I bench a sleepwalker in a heartbeat.

  23. ADVENTUROO 01/06/2013 at 9:04 AM #

    JohnGalt78,
I would differ with you. In 1990, we were “surgically” modified by the faculty Senate & others and had our “we expect to win” removed by Dr. Monteith. Coaches Robinson & Sendek never bothered to look in our trousers because they were told we had been “fixed”. Coac Lowe brought in the Valvano pills and almost restored our equipment in the ACC Tournament in 2007. We did have a mild relapse but he kept bringing new drugs. He finally got a mild Viagra in us but he could not quite get us mentally prepared. Coach Gottfried found some new drugs and got us some “therapy”. Had it not been for the Lowe recruits, we would not be where we are today. We are just fortunate enough that Dr. Monteith chose chemical neutering rather than surgical.

Guys need to quit complaining about Lowe’s kids. Lorenzo Brown is one of Lowe’s guys and he is a stud and doesn’t seem to be a head-case. Howell is one of Lowe’s guys and he is a beast in the middle, even if foul prone and a little shorter than the competition. And wood is the best shooter in college basketball. We need to give Lowe some credit for getting these 3 guys to the program. CJ is a bit of a head-case, so we can all agree on that, but he’s going to win us more games than he loses us. Don’t give too much credit to Gott’s guys either: Purvis played well, but about cost us the game at the end with stupid fouls. These are 20 year old kids and they all have their issues. Bottom line, BC is young and talented and had won 5 straight and came to play against a ranked opponent with the crowd on their side. We should expect tight games on the road in ACC play no matter who the competition.

  25. sjmac11 01/06/2013 at 11:17 AM #

No one’s complaining about Lowes kids, instead making obvious statements but since there’s concern I’ll clarify MY opinion…..Lo Brown is a stud however he disappears into the mist at times, “lowes kid”, CJ….well you probably can even admit that one, Scott Wood is one of the best shooters so WHY does he not score until the last minutes of a close game? “lowes kid”…Rich Howell is the exception. I love each and every one of the guys as a State fan, but if you or I label these complaint then yes they are and they are warranted. Road ACC games will be tight and tough battles, I’m aware. I just strive, beg and plead for us to compete at a high level on a regular basis and these (yes Lowe’s kids) have proven they just don’t want to do that.

Not trying to beat anyone down, just as big a fan as any of you….just frustrated sometimes.
