Report: Sonny Dykes to ‘interview’ for NC State job on Wednesday morning

SFN’s Tuesday morning coaching update highlighted that Lousiana Tech’s Sonny Dykes appeared to be the ‘clubhouse leader’ for the vacant NC State football coaching position.

After a day of significant rumors that see-sawed focus between Sonny Dykes and Clemson offensive co-ordinator, Chad Morris, the The News Star in Monroe, Louisiana is reporting that Sonny Dykes will ‘interview’ with NC State on Wednesday morning. Link to report

Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes will interview for the North Carolina State head football coaching job Wednesday morning, The News-Star has learned.

North Carolina State scheduled an emergency meeting of the board of trustees for Wednesday afternoon, according to the News and Observer, a newspaper in Raleigh, N.C.

Louisiana Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde hasn’t returned a phone call after The News-Star learned of Dykes’ interview, but he said earlier Tuesday evening that Tech’s coaching situation is “fluid,” but “as far we know, no decision has been made yet.”

Additionally, many fans on Louisiana Tech message boards are claiming that Dykes is NC State bound. (Link here)

Right now, the evidence appears to be piling up and the signs are pointing towards Sonny Dykes.

As a friend of mine said tonight, “We all know that you don’t ‘interview’ for a job if you don’t already have it.” We also know that it the interview isn’t made public if a deal is not close to imminent.

Additionally, the timing of this ‘interview’ is made more conspicuous by the emergency meeting of the NC State Board of Trustees that has been called for tomorrow afternoon after the interview.

One last tangential point of support regarding Dykes — Florida State Defensive Co-ordinator Mark Stoops accepted the Kentucky job today after Dykes was reportedly highly coveted by the Wildcats. We’ve heard today from some contacts connected in Lexington that the Kentucky people have reason to believe that Dykes is heading to NC State. Again, it is more anecdotal than concrete information; but, it is a data point worthy of introduction.

If you have some time you can take a look at every offensive play that Louisiana Tech ran in a 57-59 overtime loss to Texas A&M’s on October 13th of this season.

I was informed by whoever it was answering DY’s emails that she was “out of town” on Monday. Is that a clue!

Can anyone explain to me from the video – why does the LG watch the QB until he makes a hand gesture, then turns and the ball is snapped? If it is some silent snap count, why? What does it do that the normal type count doesn’t?

    Old13,
That is a REAL clue. I might email a short note every other month or so. BUT, she responds withing 10 minutes at all times of the day. She probably has worn out the iPhone that she got in April when her’s was stolen in Columbus.

Appears as if her email is being forwarded from the server. Sounds like she is DEEP into this.

May not have to go through the turmoil of the SS chase this time.

The lady has more going on than just a coaching search…she’s also trying to keep the boat afloat in rough seas.

She’ll need a good tropical vacation when all of this is taken care of.

According to scout.com, his recruiting class this year ranks 121 out of 125. His class last year was in the 90s. That’s Alabama type recruiting in the bizarro world.

Packfan28, that’s exactly what I was wondering about – recruiting. In his three full years at LA Tech, his “banner” year was #82 (2.20 stars avg) in 2011 according to scout.com.

    @Packfan28 & JSRy2k

Wouldn’t that also be a huge testament to his coaching ability, doing more with less “talent”? So, if he did have “talented” kids, wouldn’t his teams be that much better?

My guy “in the know” says it’s a done deal. In fact, he said it was a done deal yesterday. I guess I should have checked w/him sooner. Hope he’s right.

DirtyCap, my fear is that was exactly what TOB was known for. Getting more out of less. Unfortunately that can only get you so far. I’m just surprised because DY made such a big deal out of recruiting in her press conference.

I think he was considered a fantastic recruiter when he was at Texas Tech.

  10. old13 11/27/2012 at 10:27 PM #

I would think that NCSU\ACC would be a better draw for recruits than LT\WAC.

Right, wrong or indifferent, unless he pulls a “Cal” and decides NOT to get on the plane or his wife decides she does not like Raleigh, we probably have a NEW coach.

If you google enough, you can find the original contract with LA Tech. He got a 2 year extension and raise in Dec, 2011 of $250K, which is a good one as his guaranteed base was $450K. His original contract had a $800K Buy Out, but he also, according to Joe Schad of ESPN, renogiated that to a lower amount.

His performance bonuses are really low by Gottfried’s contract. So, we will probably not be out major $$’s on an annual basis, and the buyout and TOB’s buyout will cost us around $1.7 – 1.8 Million.

The Wiki site had a couple of interesting things….First, like Howard Cosell, “He NEVER Played the Game”. He was a baseball player. He has great genes. He also worked for Mike Stoops….

Fascinating…..Wonder if McQueen Campbell’s plane is picking him up?

Only watched till halftime with video…all I can say NOT impressed with what I saw. Its like watching a TOB team in blue…dropped passes, sacks, off tackle run, slants…SOS plus #121 in recruiting?? Obviously it gets better in the second half as they go into OT which is again TOB’ing. Heres hoping DY is not rushing into a hire with this guy.

  13. DirtyCap 11/27/2012 at 10:30 PM #

    @Packfan28
I see your point. My only rebuttal that I can come up with is: if TOB was at LaTech, would he have a 9-3 season? My gut tells me no, but I also don’t want to play the hypothetical game. Just something to ponder.
My hope is that Dykes brings in a staff that can recruit, much like Gott did for basketball.

  14. shelbypackfan 11/27/2012 at 10:31 PM #

I understand the concern about his recruiting….but let us not forget…..HE WAS RECRUITING TO LA TECH! He was trying to recruit in the heart of SEC/Big 12 country.

  15. Packfan28 11/27/2012 at 10:35 PM #

OM, he did have a rep as a good recruiter as an assistant, but how much of that is the head coach? I know Louisiana Tech isn’t a football destination, bit there were a lot of crappy Us that outrecruited him. Again, if DY has recruiting as a priority, this doesn’t make sense.

  16. Old MacDonald 11/27/2012 at 10:36 PM #

Rivals named him a top ten recruiter or something like that when he was OC at Texas Tech.

  17. Old MacDonald 11/27/2012 at 10:38 PM #

Saying that La Tech isn’t a football destination is a bit if an understatement.

  18. eas 11/27/2012 at 10:39 PM #

Maybe she is just interviewing him for the OC position…seriously we all said WTF when she hired
The Gottfather and that turned out well. Maybe he is hungry and passionate about doing something special,

  19. gotohe11carolina 11/27/2012 at 10:42 PM #

I watched la tech give Boise state every last bit they could handle season before last. I do hate watching the spread though.

  20. Packfan28 11/27/2012 at 10:42 PM #

He is being out recruited by football powerhoises such as Texas State, Utah State, San Jose State, UNC Charlorte (WTF?), ULM (whoever they are) etc. Not against this hire of it happens, just some early concern is all.

  21. Old MacDonald 11/27/2012 at 10:45 PM #

I look at recruiting differently than most. I don’t think we will ever be able to pull great classes here…too much competition in this overfished region and other factors not in our favor. The better model for us is a “developer” or a guy with an angle who can get guys to overachieve. We tried the recruiter model with Chuck and that got us a bunch of misfit toys and head cases…just don’t think that works for us.

  22. old13 11/27/2012 at 11:02 PM #

But CtC did show that top recruits can be recruited to Raleigh. If the new coach can get mostly 3* model citizens with a few 4* model citizens thrown in, it would still be an improvement over TOB’s recruiting.

  23. eas 11/27/2012 at 11:16 PM #

I just read through a good number of pages on the L.A. Tech forums and they don’t seem very upset if he leaves for Raleigh. Kind of scary to think about and there comments on his lack of passion as well as a terrible defense. I must say this seems like an odd hire at this point but I am hopefully we pulled another rabbit out of a hat.

  24. JeremyH 11/27/2012 at 11:17 PM #

Is the quality of coaching sufficient to outweigh that the last name is a derogatory reference for a kind of group of women?

  25. Old MacDonald 11/27/2012 at 11:24 PM #

” But CtC did show that top recruits can be recruited to Raleigh.”

Many if not most had at least one flaw that was scaring the big boys away though. I don’t think we can ever lean on recruiting stars here. Too many programs, shallow talent pool…plus the SEC skimming the cream .
