November Looms (Corrected)

Someone hacked my account last week. Those who know me well know I’m just not the reasonable, positive type, like the misguided fool who wrote under my byline tried to be.

I understand the point he was trying to make (as idiotic as it indeed was). Essentially, due to the inherent, imbalanced power structure, managing expectations in college football is far different than “accepting our place” in college basketball. There just aren’t many 10-win coaches out there, so they have to be created over time. Oregon and Virginia Tech are the only two programs in the past 20 years that gained and then maintained their status as part of college football’s elite. The Virginia Tech model is certainly one we can follow (we have the resources), and while TOB will arguably leave State a program better off than he inherited, it’s time for us to replace him with someone who can advance it to the next level, because he clearly isn’t capable.

My first call: James Franklin. He’s young (40) and energetic, has NFL experience; he’s widely appreciated as a solid recruiter (Top 25 in 2012), and is winning at Vanderbilt (by Vanderbilt standards). He was Yow’s chosen coach-in-waiting at Maryland before she left (he was not her replacement Kevin Anderson’s, however), so there’s clearly an opportunity…but — big but — Franklin currently makes around $3 million per year (estimated) in Nashville, so someone’s pockets deeper than mine will have to open up to make that kind of commitment.

No sleep ’til Atlanta.

Could someone tell me how Kansas State recruits such great players? It’s freaking Kansas, most HS teams out there only play 7 players. You would think the best go to Texas and Oklahoma. There is no excuse for us except that UN-Cheat recruits players the day they are born thru marketing and we do not. Just go into any WalMart or sports store and watch any local comercial it’s all blue, not a speck of RED anywhere. We just suck at it!

  2. LRM 11/04/2012 at 11:37 AM #

^Bill Snyder gets very similar personnel to TOB, but he does an amazing job of finding players who fit perfectly into his system and then coaches them up.

When you watch K-State this year, you see a team that executes and you don’t see many mistakes.

  3. 85Designo 11/04/2012 at 11:46 AM #

If it IS about recruiting then we have to make damn sure that the NCAA breaks it off in the Tar’s hole so we can get an edge if only for a year or two. If they get no more sanctions they what they have now, the rest of the ACC should make sure they get hit with conference sanctions and fire Swoffee.

  4. Dogbreath 11/04/2012 at 12:13 PM #

This is my view of things: NC State and UNX football programs operate on a zero sum margin. Our success comes at their expense and vice versa.

With their sanctions, we have a golden opportunity to gain and sustain a competitive advantage over the next few years.

That’s not going to happen when they continue to out recruit us, even with scholarship reductions and the cloud of NCAA probation hanging over their program through 2014.

This in my opinion is why Yow can and will pull the trigger. We HAVE to pounce on them while we can, and O’Brien clearly is showing he’s incapable of doing it.

We simply cannot let this opportunity go to waste.

  5. eas 11/04/2012 at 12:28 PM #

It sucks to be out recruited by UNC even with sanctions. TOB has done great against UNC but maybe I am in the minority hear but too me that is don’t the only game that counts anymore.

  6. MP 11/04/2012 at 12:56 PM #

If we are only bowl eligible because of a freaking missed FG by Maryland, TOB owes it to NC State to resign.

  7. eas 11/04/2012 at 1:38 PM #

What sucks the most is having to be frustrated, mad and in limbo of what the status of TOB will be at the end of the season. What if we barely get in the worst bowl game possible and we keep TOB another year? More fighting among the fan base and frustration will be the outcome.

Please DY just find some big money somewhere to buy out the 5 million and sale watches on the street corner if you have to. Just get it done! A hungry and motivated coach is what we need. Someone who will get in the player’s face when they do good and when they screw up. Someone with Amato’s passion but better management skills.

So if we don’t have the big bucks to payout for a big name coach, I have a candidate who I have read about who is an offensive mastermind, and has even been consulted by big time division I schools for some of his plays. He is 48 years old, and sound like he could be our diamond in the rough. And coming to State would be a step up. The name, Bob Stitt. Check him out, he sounds like the kind of coach we need.

  9. eas 11/04/2012 at 2:01 PM #

He looks interesting. Wonder if he could recruit at a higher level.

Personally, I do not give a flying flip about the past 100-years of .500 NC State football. The past does not (or, at least, should not) define or predict the future.
There is NOTHING worse than listening to local radio yaps, has-been “expert” coaches and even our own self appointed, know-it-all apologists condescend to tell us things like:
    • know your place
    • look in the back of your school program – NC State has never been great in football, much less consistently good
    • you are almost there, hang on, something good has to happen
    • we do not have the budget to win
    • we still do not have the facilities
    • we can’t recruit in-state because of 4 other D-1 schools
    • we can’t recruit out-of-state because NC State is not nationally known
    • top recruits do not want to come to Raleigh
    • a school like NC State can’t expect to run a clean program AND compete on a high level
    • etc, etc, etc
Apparently the soccer ball hit most of these blow hards in the head a time too many. Funny, many of the same said the same things about PACK basketball. I am sure glad Coach Gott (and staff) did not listen to this malarkey.
NC State is one of the nations biggest and best. I expect excellence in everything we do – everything – and nothing less.
What do we of the lunatic fringe expect?
No one expects (or is asking) State football to be a 10-win program every year.
    THE STANDARD
    1) compete equally recruiting in-state … and yes, even for 3 and 4 star athletes
    2) compete successfully for recruits out-of-state
    3) 90% of the time, beat Wake, Duke, BC, Virginia, Maryland (and soon to be ACC bottom dwellers) Pitt and Syracuse; and then thoroughly beat the patsy out-of-conference teams.
    4) beat the ‘Holes 66% of the time … they did it to us; now it is high time to return the favor.
    5) compete equally with the upper-tier ACC teams like FSU, Clemson, Va Tech, Miami, Notre Dame and occasionally Ga Tech.
    6) do the above and 7-wins becomes the new bad season
    7) do the above and 8-wins is the new average season
    8) do the above and 9-wins is the expected goal
    9) with the right coach/staff, 10-wins will take care of itself
    10) on average, we expect to be a top-25 program – both in wins and statistics
Deb is more than capable enough to find the right coach (and staff) for the job. Can’t think of a white coach? Well hell’s bells, how about one of the many overlooked black coaches!?!
And prospective coaches, if this “standard” is too much to ask, you need not apply …

If at first you don’t succeed, suck, suck, suck, until you do succeed!

Which one of the Three Stooges said that?

There’s an answer, just one that most folks can’t handle..

  12. gtspack 11/04/2012 at 5:49 PM #

Charlie Strong. I was talking to some Louisville fans at the Belk bowl and they were going on and on about him. (especially the recruiting)

  13. AugustaWolf 11/04/2012 at 7:11 PM #

    highstick,

I believe it was Curly that said, “If at first you don’t succeed, suck seed ’til you can’t suck no more.”

    One of my favorite lines…

  14. vtpackfan 11/04/2012 at 7:58 PM #

James Franklin, James Franklin, and James F’n Franklin. Keep Archer as DC and let’s roll baby. Screw the $$- if we got to go all UMd and cut seven sports in a few years its still worth it.

  15. NelsonHall97 11/04/2012 at 7:59 PM #

Charlie Strong is an excellent coach, and I think he would do very well at NC State. Louisville is in the Dead East, so he probably would like to move to a more stable conference. SEC or Big 12 would be his logical first choices, and SEC will likely have a few spots open in a few months. He will certainly be considered for those SEC jobs, so it would be an up hill battle to get him to go to any ACC school. Not to mention he would cost over twice what TOB makes on top of TOB’s buyout.

  16. sequoyah 11/04/2012 at 8:00 PM #

Danny Rocco – & we need to sign him up while we can afford him.

  17. ADVENTUROO 11/04/2012 at 8:09 PM #

    Not a Fan of BLUE,

VERY GOOD POST. Your job criteria sounds spot on.

I am now of the opinion that if the season plays out and the “FSU” team does not show up, that there will be a coaching change. I think that the AD has the resources to be a competitive top 25 FB school and that AD Yow is committed to doing just that.

NOW, if the FSU team show up, decidedly beats BC and WF and maybe CU and then has a good bowl showing, that we will NOT see a change. I do NOT know where the line is between the two scenarios.

There apparently are a LOT of WP fans that have been somewhat apathetic (that may be too harsh a word) or have just accepted a barely winning season that were pushed OVER the ledge yesterday.

I know, I am ONE of them. I felt like we were beat by a team the THIRD TIME. We actually lost (from a spirit and program) the MD game. That spilled over in the UNC game and was in full bloom yesterday.

If it blossoms next Saturday, then TOB needs to call the Realtor as there WILL be a new HC in January.

All of us have our opinions….and as we get new info or see certain things change, we also change. Yesterday, I thought TOB’s job was NOT in jeopardy….today, I see him KEEPING it in jeopardy.

Only time and the team will tell…..even with a good showing against WF, momentum may have shifted and there will be a change….

BUT, you nailed what we need….all I would add if there are MULTIPLE candidates that are equally qualified, then I vote for the one with the NCSU affiliation.

The comments about the recruiting ability (well maybe a little stronger character recruits) of Amato and the passion is needed, but the candidate needs to be able to manage a staff, relate to the team, and inspire them. Debbie Yow saw that in Gottfried….she knows WHAT we need….

  18. JSRy2k 11/04/2012 at 8:51 PM #

“Talked to Peyton Manning there who said if we didn’t beat FSU then Brian Kelly was set to fly in that evening to take over.”
    – LMAO

  19. JSRy2k 11/04/2012 at 8:54 PM #

Fire TOB…IF there’s a solid coach w/ high upside waiting in the wings. Although this isn’t the cluster that the Lowe tenure was, downgrading just because we’re pissed wouldn’t be good for the program.

  20. ADVENTUROO 11/04/2012 at 9:50 PM #

If any of you watched the FIRST debate and noticed President Obama’s body language, then I urge you to watch the TOB show this weekend. It is online at GoPack.com if you didn’t DVR it.

The man is obviously NOT happy to be on TV and seems to be wondering WHY he has to talk to this guy.

He was honest in his comments, but that certainly makes the situation worse. I have watched this show many times and never seen him this uptight. HE KNOWS!

In last week’s “November Looms” , I questioned if any were worried we’d lose one of our 3 other remaining games plus the expected loss to Clemson.

I felt fairly certain of the possibility, though I didn’t think it would be yesterday. Over the last few weeks the continued support for TOB and where our program is at this point, confounded me. It’s kind of like you were still undecided voters at this late date and walking into the voting booth Tuesday. Really??

Last week and yesterday are like trademarks of this regime, and has been the last couple of years. The newspapers are all but saying they are quitters, packing it in. If you are still on the TOB bandwagon, I have to think you are happy losers, and way out of touch with where this program can be with proper management. We are wasting money on this staff to go any further. I will trust that DY isn’t happy and that major changes will be forthcoming. That, or Carter Finley will probably begin looking in the 1st quarter as it did in the 4th yesterday.

I really didn’t want to read anything about that so called football game on Sat. I didn’t need another reason to look forward to basketball season but TOB , staff and an uninspired team gave me more reason to be extremely excited about this coming Friday night!!

  23. vtpackfan 11/05/2012 at 9:30 AM #

Omg I meant keep Tenuta- I thought it was just a nightmare that I typed Archer in.Franklin is the perfect fit here, besides the Yow connection. TOB/Bible run a “we do what we do best” system and let the chips fall where they may. Franklin pinpoints an opposition for their weaknesses and gameplans specificly by that rationale.

You couldn’t get two diconomic systems anywhere so investment should be at a premium.

  24. vtpackfan 11/05/2012 at 9:39 AM #

Rocco would be the next best, but he may not recruit anything beyond TOB and Franklin can and will, definitely by year two.

He also grew up a minority QB in the burbs of Philly just like our Freshman backup QB 🙂

  25. 61Packer 11/05/2012 at 10:42 AM #

This season isn’t going to go away just yet. Wake won’t be easy for us and they have a good QB who will give our D problems. Clemson, now clearly the ACC’s only good team (because nobody who blows one to us can be considered “good”) will simply light up the scoreboard, and unless we can put up at least 40 points, it won’t be close. We should beat BC but only because they’re as bad as South Alabama and we’re not playing at Chestnut Hill.

We’d be better off without a bowl this season. Fans who leave halfway through homecoming, quite a few of them, probably won’t support a bowl trip. There’s just not enough of the season left to disprove what we’ve seen this season- a mediocre, erratic, defenseless, unmotivated and coachless team. In the highly unlikely event we win out, we might avoid a bad bowl, but if we do get a bowl, it’s probably going to be a bad one. And bad attendance at a bowl won’t help us next year if we’re in a dogfight for a decent bowl.

I have confidence that the AD will take appropriate action when the season mercifully plays out. I just don’t want to see it end like it did for Amato, when a horrible UNC team beat us by 2 TDs and a mediocre ECU team painted our stadium purple a week later. I was there in C-F that night, but I thought I was in Greenville.

Cowher won’t come here. Chris Petersen of Boise State won’t either. I’d be shocked if DY even considered Motorcycle Man. The Soliches and Chows of the profession have been good but are past their prime, but there are a lot of younger coaches out there worth looking at. Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas and maybe even Southern Cal will be looking for replacements. They could be doing likewise at GT and UVA, once Hoos fans realize that beating us maybe wasn’t enough to save Mike London’s job. I haven’t heard anyone mention Butch Jones from Cincinnati, or Dave Doeren from Northern Illinois, both who are doing great jobs. Indiana’s Kevin Wilson would be a great pick for somebody, although maybe not for us because he’s a UNC grad. Then there’s June Jones from SMU, Bronco Mendenhall from BYU and Sonny Dykes from Louisiana Tech. Plus I’m sure there are a few SOCON coaches as well, and many, many good and deserving assistants.

I don’t think TOB will be back next season. He has no returning stars, no recruiting class, and probably no motivation to remain on the hot seat when he can instead relax on Folly Beach or the Isle of Palms. And most importantly, TOB has lost most of our fans despite the fact that, unlike HWSNBN, TOB is still liked by many of us.
