November Looms (Corrected)

Someone hacked my account last week. Those who know me well know I’m just not the reasonable, positive type, like the misguided fool who wrote under my byline tried to be.

I understand the point he was trying to make (as idiotic as it indeed was). Essentially, due to the inherent, imbalanced power structure, managing expectations in college football is far different than “accepting our place” in college basketball. There just aren’t many 10-win coaches out there, so they have to be created over time. Oregon and Virginia Tech are the only two programs in the past 20 years that gained and then maintained their status as part of college football’s elite. The Virginia Tech model is certainly one we can follow (we have the resources), and while TOB will arguably leave State a program better off than he inherited, it’s time for us to replace him with someone who can advance it to the next level, because he clearly isn’t capable.

My first call: James Franklin. He’s young (40) and energetic, has NFL experience; he’s widely appreciated as a solid recruiter (Top 25 in 2012), and is winning at Vanderbilt (by Vanderbilt standards). He was Yow’s chosen coach-in-waiting at Maryland before she left (he was not her replacement Kevin Anderson’s, however), so there’s clearly an opportunity…but — big but — Franklin currently makes around $3 million per year (estimated) in Nashville, so someone’s pockets deeper than mine will have to open up to make that kind of commitment.

No sleep ’til Atlanta.

maybe we get a change next tuesday or maybe we don’t. I ain’t gonna lose much sleep over it one way or the other. But we gotta have change at the football program at my beloved NCSU. Time for a change. I think from how I examine TOB demeanor that mean ole Deb Yow has told him it is excellence or out the door. TOB ran into problems at BC with the higher ups and he left. I suspect DY gave him an earful and he said “I am outta here”. I bet he leaves fired or not at the end of the year.

We didn’t crap up the bed just on the ACC Network; this game was televised to 175 countries around the world via the Armed Forces Network. Our football program is now INTERNATIONALLY known!

The papers said this week that the ACC Coastal was dragging down the league. UVA was last in the Coastal, so where does this leave us?

I think the team (and coaches) are mentally still in Chapel Hill, staring in disbelief at the scoreboard there after that punt return and 2-pt. conversion afterward.

Our effort today was just about pointless. So are our reasons for keeping this coaching staff another season. Come next Homecoming, I want coaches on our sideline who can motivate our players. We deserve nothing less.

Just remember this- unless we win in Death Valley, the BC game will determine whether we’ll have a winning season or a losing season. But regardless of our final record, this one is already in the books as a FAIL.

    Toilet Bowl, anyone?

TOB runs a clean program, but he has reached his limit. Cowher is a pipe dream. Hope Yow pulls the plug and hires a young, aggressive coach who will bring in an enthusiastic staff with energy. While State is not a football school, we can do much better. Time will tell.

  4. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 9:00 PM #

To say that Bill Cowher would be in over his head coaching in the ACC may just be the stupidest (sorry I don’t know how to put it any other way or any gentler than that) and most hilarious thing I’ve ever read on a message board. LO-frigging-L. Then to really take it to the next level, calling folks ignorant for wanting him to coach here. Holeeeeee shiiiit! Wow! I mean.. just .. WOW. My mind is blown.

Can someone please learn me in what would be so perplexing to coach Cowher by having to coach in the mighty ACC? Perhaps it would be the ‘down by contact rule’ that would just neuter all of his coaching abilities, or maybe the immediate boost in recruiting that would hold us back?????

  5. Iremember87 11/03/2012 at 9:01 PM #

After the game I went to the basketball game. Was sitting down in the corner. Debbie Yow was behind sideline and took a call and walked out of the arena quickly…I thought aloud “I hope it is Bill Cowher returning her call”…everyone around me agreed. For those who say Cowher is a “pipe dream”, I was at State in ’83 and Valvano taught us to dream big. As for the NFL, I think bama or LSU could beat the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coaching is coaching and right now we don’t have one. I have had season tickets for 26 years. I will not be renewing my “lifetime seats” (that we got roped into after the Gator bowl) if TOB is back next season. Totally pathetic effort today. Say what you want about Amato but i enjoyed the excitement. I don’t even care anymore.

  6. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 9:04 PM #

In over his head? Nope. He would figure it out.

But does he want to? Well, he hasn’t wanted to coach in the NFL, where he has made his living, in six years. Tell me why.

Motor may be a little rusty.

  7. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 9:10 PM #

To clarify I have no illusions that Cowher will ever coach here. But even if he did apparently we have some fans ready to ride him out on a rail as soon as he got here.

  8. albunde6 11/03/2012 at 9:11 PM #

Assume that this qualifies as a WTF loss. Was not expecting it this week. Assumed it would be next week against Wake. Crap, I just don’t care anymore.

  9. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 9:27 PM #

Troll, I am assuming that comment was directed at me. Let me be very clear -I would LOVE to have Cowher. No doubt.

BUT, what makes anyone think this is the gig for him? You don’t think NFL franchises have thrown loads of money at him these past six years?

He’s never coached the college game. Never had to recruit a player. Learning curve.

No learning curve for sitting in a chair every Sunday. Makes millions for doing really jack chit.

If he wants a challenge, this could be the place. So is Cleveland or KC or Carolina. But the status quo is awfully cushy. Can’t blame the guy, honestly.

I understand the Dr. Yow was visibly upset after the game last week. Today’s activities will not make her feel any better.
Thus far she has pulled a few rabbits out of the hat. If she pulls the trigger lets hope that her success at finding diamonds in the rough continue.

  11. RiversDance 11/03/2012 at 9:39 PM #

I think this is the game that sends TOB off into the sunset. I thought about it all week and figured if he went 3-1 to end the season at 8-4 then won a bowl to finish 9-4 no way he could be fired even 8-5 would be hard. After all we are “only little old N.C. State”. Ishing the bed against our rival in the 4th Q and then completely ishing all over the place at Homecoming has to have him canned. I can’t see big donors or Yow being happy with the last 2 weeks. As a young alum, I know I don’t care much weight but there is no way after the last two weeks that TOB can be retained for 2013.

As for a new coach. I don’t know about Franklin though he has Vandy competitive in the SEC though the East is down. Cowher is pipe dream, but I laugh that people says he wouldn’t be successful here. I mean look at the ACC coaches and how bad the league is. I’d love for Cowher to be here. Also look at how Jim Mora Jr. has done at UCLA in Year One. The only leagues worse in the BCS are the Bad 10 and Big Least. Sonny Dykes at Louisiana Tech is interesting. I wish we looked at coaches before because I really like Kevin Sumlin and Art Bryles, but they are dreams now.

  12. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 9:42 PM #

Immediate boost in recruiting? You realize, the last time Cowher coached these kids were 11 or 12 years old. Many have no clue who the guy is. It has been a while.

  13. Wolfacct 11/03/2012 at 9:45 PM #

I’ve supported TOB up until now. After watching the sideline today between the 3rd and 4th quarters, I realized it is time for change. There was no emotion from the team or the coaches. The team has quit on the coaches. I looked at my wife and said “let’s go, I’ve seen enough of this.” Doubt I waste the money to attend any more games this year. I’ve got some painting and other chores that will be more enjoyable than watching the crap I watched today.

  14. chilly water 11/03/2012 at 9:46 PM #

    we need a new coach.

Please god not another coaching search.

    Donovan?

    Donovan?

    Bueller?

  15. Lumpy 11/03/2012 at 9:48 PM #

“I wouldn’t say we’ve ‘wasted’ a bunch of money on TOB.

We’ve gotten a program that is definitely in better shape than it was when he arrived while only paying about a million a year.

You could make the case that we’ve gotten a bargain in the financial side with such a low expense when compared to what we’ve gotten”

^ Correctamundo! This is the time to make the move. While there are still a few pieces in place such as the D-Line and Thornton. There is never a good time to do this, because if things are going good….you wouldn’t need to. TOB has been given chance after chance at representing the Atlantic in the title game- sometimes twice in a season- and each time he coughs it up like an Amish kid at Rumspringa. Get someone else. ASAP!

  16. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 9:51 PM #

Yes absolutely an immediate boost in recruiting. Absolutely without any doubt.

    1) Our current recruiting is awful, so you should see how it wouldn’t take much for any kind of boost.
    2) How many coaches in this state can sit down in a recruits living room and show them their Super Bowl ring?

Yes there would certainly be a learning curve coming to the college game, but I’m willing to bet it’s not that steep for a coach of the caliber of Bill Cowher.

And my prior posts were not directed to you, but rather towards the prior comments on this topic claiming that the hiring of Bill Cowher would not be an excellent hire for NC State and how it is ignorant to think it would be. I’ve now come to the conclusion that poster was trolling because the absurdity of that statement is unfathomable.

  17. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 9:57 PM #

Honestly though, I’m just SO thankful that some of our fans aren’t allowed to make decisions in the athletics department. Could you imagine if Cowher wanted to coach here and Yow told him, “go fly a kite, this ain’t the NFL, buddy! This here is the ACC!”

  18. albunde6 11/03/2012 at 10:01 PM #

How could we ever expect a coach like Cowher to find an offensive coordinator that is the caliber of Bible.

  19. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 10:01 PM #

Nope. Recruits are not just going to flock to an NC State because of a coaching change. It is all about contacts. Hard work. Personal attention. It takes real work. Guys like Cutcliffe and Fedora, and all the SEC schools around us, get this. There would most definitely be an adjustment period if you hire any career NFL guy. As I said, he is smart enough to figure it out. But I do question his motor after 6 years of inactivity.

My choice would be for a younger guy that is chomping at the bit to make a name for himself. Find the next Muschamp, or Strong, or Dabo, or what have you. It is ALL a out recruiting, and we need true energy to make some progress.

  20. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 10:07 PM #

“Nope. Recruits are not just going to flock to an NC State because of a coaching change.”

I’m not sure what you arguing now? Because “recruits flocking to NC State b/c of coaching change” is completely different from “boost in our current recruiting if we got Bill Cowher”.

I agree a coaching change will not cause recruits to flock to NC State… but qualify it with a coaching change of BILL COWHER and I will tell you right now that WILL absolutely 100% boost our recruiting. I’d bet my home on it for a nickel.

  21. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 10:15 PM #

Ok, maybe he would. I tend to disagree, as he never has recruited a player (just like Sidney when he was hired). But for the sake of argument, lets assume he would.

But, what makes anyone think he is interested in OUR job, a college job, when he has turned down high paying NFL jobs? You do know, he has ONLY coached in the NFL. And he has spent SIX years behind a desk.

  22. ADVENTUROO 11/03/2012 at 10:16 PM #

Some comments….Was not able to watch the UNC game lastweek as they don’t run ACC in SEC country. Talked to my “crew” during the game and also at the BB game. We have a block of LTR’s.

First, they said that today’s game was WORSE than last week as they watched it on TV. Today, they experienced it.

Second, they are NOT ready to “CHUCK” their LTR pledges based on one game. So, we will continue to write checks.

Third, a LOT of people will STILL write checks. That is why CF was almost at cacpacity today. It will be a bit lower next week, but the TICKETS were SOLD, so it DOES NOT matter that folks do NOT show up….other than the embarrassment.

Fourth, Does ANYBODY know what the REAL condition of our AD budget is? AD Yow has made a LOT of changes and her MAIN goal was to increase BB attendance. That was where the Shortfall was. She also has negotiated more lucrative Apparel and Media Contracts, so we OUGHT to be on BETTER footing.

Fifth, I assume that BB ticket sales are UP this year…..if not, then WHY NOT? BUT, they are still running a LOT of Promo’s…..we NEED the revenue. We are paying Gottfried and his staff a LOT more that we were paying Lowe and company.

FINALLY….if the AD budget does NOT have a major surplus, then all the whining and TOB bashing is NOT going to accomplish anything. If you can NOT afford to fire him and if you are NOT experiencing a Revenue Decline (as MD was), then a buyout is NOT an option.

IS Dedbie Yow upset? Of course she is. Will she lambast TOB this year. Of course she will. BUT, will she have the financial position to do something (assuming that we blow the rest of the season and are bowlless…), NOPE….probably NOT.

As to Bill Cowher. He is a great guy. He really understands the game. He would be a great recruiter because his experience in the DANCE would have recruits falling all over him. He was part of a championship NCSU Team. He is ONE OF US….

OPPS, I just realized what I wrote was about Coach Lowe….

SO, be careful what you wish for…..

My son-in-law (a UNC Grad and ex HS FB player) made a great observation this morning. He said what I heard my HS FB (and BB) Coach say over and over…..

DO NOT LET A TEAM BEAT YOU TWICE. Today, we did. The UNC fog was there. It was apparent to EVERYONE. No noise. No fan emotion. Even the small numbered UVA band was making MORE noise and beating up on the Power Sound of the South.

WF had BETTER be a BETTER game….

  23. TheAliasTroll 11/03/2012 at 10:18 PM #

Okay, a couple things about the Lowe analogy.. Sidney Lowe’s problem was never with recruiting. It could be argued that his NBA connections helped with his recruiting.

Second thing, Sidney Lowe never won an NBA championship as a head coach. He was in fact one of the worst head coaches in the history of the NBA.

  24. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 10:27 PM #

Sidney Lowe recruited so very good players. He also recruited some awful players. Chock it up to inexperience. And, of course, he couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Cowher obviously is a tremendous football coach. Wait, he WAS a tremendous coach. Been a while. Rusty. Seriously doubt he coaches again.

And winning a championship in the NFL is a completely different thing than in college football. In college football, you build it. You groom it. You are with those guys all year long. In the NFL, you are only as good as your GM and your bottom line. And the Steelers are the best run organization out there. So there are clear differences.

Again, if Cowher said he wanted the job, offer it to him yesterday. I just see no real reason why he would suddenly be interested.

  25. Wulfpack 11/03/2012 at 10:28 PM #

Good points, Roo. But, when half the crowd is gone in the third, I kinda think DY may take notice. She is not all about the bottom line. She gets it. She knows where we are today. Her wheels are turning.
